Two evenly matched teams which always goes to the last session. Chris Woakes is putting his pads on 😱
I don't think anyone would be able to handle the tension if it does go to the last session
They put the covers on when they went off for tea at 4 and came out at 4.30. What is this if it's not the last session 🤔
It's the fourth to last session
I will concede it's the 4th day 😀 it will be an anti climax if the match has to finish tomorrow morning in front of a few hundred people and not in the final session today.

Tomorrow's already sold out
How much is a fifth day in an England test match and if you only get from 4 balls or 40 minutes do the fans get a rebate ?

Day 5 tickets are always way cheaper than the other days because of this

Why test cricket is such and amazing sport yet also slowly dying all summed up here. Ebb and flow from session to session across 4 days following a topsy turvey series. Into the final throws of the game and series with everything as finely poised and exciting as you could hope for. Fuck off for bad light and utterly kill the moment. The sport doesn’t help itself sometimes.

The batsmen couldn't pick up the ball and were repeatedly playing and missing against 85MPH bowling.
For the last few overs (before bad light) English batsmen survived a few LBW and caught behind shouts and the only runs we scored were leg-byes.
The TV cameras make the ground look lighter than it is, it was the right decision and besides the light was the same when India came off on day one.
Why was Bethell in ahead of Smith anyway? England lost momentum once Bethell came in.
Because 6 is too high for Smith as he's need to shepherd the tail even though he batted there previously in Stokes' absence.
It's entirely possible that him and Root could have knocked off the runs together. I imagine they wanted Bethell to be there with Root at the end as a confidence booster, but it backfired badly, as the innings lost all momentum, Bethell being unable to rotate the strike.

as soon as Brook was out, I said: 'we are gonna lose this' .. Bethell ? part of the pack now however he plays, he stays .. Joe Rooooot ? out to a very tired shot i m o As we all know, its surely down to Smith to scrape us home to a series win

I was being ironic about Smith's ability to bat at 6. I had this argument earlier with the Surrey boys who said that he shouldn't move from 7. I do agree with why they wanted with Bethell to bat there but then they don't want him playing any red ball outside England either.
Ollie Pope test batting: 1st Innings Average 52.14 2nd innings Average 42.09 3rd innings Average 22.52 4th innings Average 16.70
That is quite an amazing stat.
I would like to see other players average to compare !
Duckett:
1st Innings Average 46.00 2nd innings Average 48.65 3rd innings Average 31.13 4th innings Average 43.14
Crawley:
1st Innings Average 37.06 2nd innings Average 33.96 3rd innings Average 25.52 4th innings Average 27.66
Pope:

Root:
1st Innings Average 50.28 2nd innings Average 60.44 3rd innings Average 47.95 4th innings Average 42.90
Brook:
1st Innings Average 64.53 2nd innings Average 72.75 3rd innings Average 50.45 4th innings Average 19.75
Stokes:
1st Innings Average 42.56 2nd innings Average 29.50 3rd innings Average 32.68 4th innings Average 37.25
Smith:
1st Innings Average 43.40 2nd innings Average 71.12 3rd innings Average 22.00 4th innings Average 59.00
Interesting this. You can see the players who have been key to the Bazball style chases over the last few years. Interesting that quite a few players have rubbish 3rd innings averages. Plays into the "we prefer to chase" idea.

When Stokes is in the side and in the short term (certainly to the end of the Ashes at least) Smith should remain at 7 and be clear in his role. Counterattacking and shepherding the tail, exactly why he he was selected in place of Foakes. But clearly for this game, and I said this before the match started, it should be Smith at 6 and Dawson at 7.
Not sure about Woakes being in the XI for the Ashes. His type of bowling has been ineffective here in the past (16 wickets at 52 I believe). From watching his this summer his bowling looks to have lost a bit of snap, and his batting form is poor as well.

The only match I see him (or his type of bowler being used) is the day/night second Test at the Gabba. I would expect Scott Boland to play in that one for Australia too if not another one too to share the workload of Cummins, Starc and Hazlewood.
Possibly, I think its a real shame that neither of the Curran brothers developed into the kind of bowling all-rounder that they were capable of. Tom Curran had a good tour here in 2017 (I think), but has done very little since, and Sam seems to have gone right off the radar.

Both fine in 50 and 20 over cricket. I agree with you though, not good enough for Test match cricket
A ridiculous rule though. So what if the game restarts at 7pm.
Thems the rules.
You can bowl 80 overs in a day & go off at 6.30pm in bright sunshine but then have the clock on you in the very last hour of the match & have to play in the gloom like Pakistan did when Thorpy hit the winning runs.

The sport couldn't help the bad light
Was there bad light at 10.30 in the morning ? Just start 30 mins earlier each day after you go off for bad light the previous evening.
The match would have finished yesterday if ALL 90 scheduled overs had been bowled by tea yesterday. Minus 2 overs per change over there should have been 324 overs bowled by tea yesterday.
Annoyed with Bethell,we needed 57 after tea,we got 13 in two overs and could have just played around and got the rest.why take a stupid swipe like that,no need, just keep in.

Bethell is a fantastic talent but he's been completely mismanaged this summer. Should be playing all the time for Warwickshire and learning his craft , I know the County Champ has been a bit of a mess with the Kookaburra rounds and pitches being absolute roads but time in the middle is what he needs.
