Love a last minute winner, a great start to our return to the Championship.
Defensively we carried on from last season, Ramsay, Jones and Coventry stepping up as I expected. Bell looks good completion for Gillesphey as he showed in preseason.
Apter’s exciting on the right, doesn’t have the power of Small but he gives that impression he has goals and assists in him at this level. Need an alternative to him which probably means bringing in a signing, although I wouldn’t completely rule out Fullah as an option there.
Carey was impressive, adds what we need in that 10 role with the running and pressing but also looked good with the ball and linked up well with Apter. Like Apter, I think he can step up and score and create at this level.
Looking forward to seeing how our starting 11 plays out, so exciting to have Carey and Knibbs competing with each other, and we still have JRC to make his debut. Our best midfield could end up with any combination of those three.
What a moment for Knibbs on his debut, can’t wait to see more of him and get a better idea of what he will offer beyond the obvious of energy and goals.
Don’t disagree that Docherty made some frustrating mistakes, but he’ll probably grab a goal in the next few games to keep up that fight for his place.
TC did what he often does, some great moments alongside some frustrating ones. I have no doubt he’ll contribute this season, but as in all positions he’ll really need to step up because our summer spending means he has some very strong competition.
I felt positive going into today off the back of our signings, and the performance backed that up - if we keep up the intensity we’ll compete at this level. Can’t wait for more to see how far we can go. Being back this level and seeing our ownership give it a proper go with investment in the team has got me interested in other games, the teams, the players and the managers again, which I haven’t been in this way since the Curbs PL years. We’re going to have some tough games but it’s great to be back in a league with a much better standard of football.
Did I miss something as to why they were so obsessed with him? They even missed our chance when TC crossed the ball right across the goal.
Wonder if the Media want to get to know him as much as possible, before he's sacked next week. It was the bloke in the suit, just next to the Watford bench that I found odd, no idea who he was.
The guy in the suit was their new manager and the one in the white T Shirt is part of the BMW sponsorship deal. That was my interpretation and how the hell would I know any better.
It's funny how Sky show some pictures and the guys on Charlton TV are talking about something else ( like the game itself, strangely). We nearly missed a goal because of the BMW guy.
My biggest takeaway from the game was that irrespective of the goal we looked stronger than them in the last 10 minutes. That bodes really well for the rest of the season.
Whenabouts was the second penalty for us that the ref didn’t call? I saw the obvious one against Edwards but I genuinely missed the second one
Multiple drags/pulls on Tanto as he cut in which the ref waved to play on - aka advantage as miraculously he kept the ball - before he was taken out in the area. Pen or at least taken back for a fk for the 3 or 4 offences outside the area. Thought the ref was poor for both side. (Which tbh helped us with Kaminski’s brain fart)
That was brilliant today. I was especially impressed with Apter, Carey, Edwards but my absolute love of this Charlton team is Kayne Ramsey.
At the end of the minute's applause I heard The Covered End start singing the Jorge Costa song. As a mark of my respect I changed the last line to 'He was our best of all' (meaning the best defender I've ever seen play for Charlton).
Then when Kayne Ramsey, during the match, appeared to get in a twist only to, as usual, sort the situation out again I burst into song again. I still haven't forgotten that stupendous block he made in the playoff semi- final against Wycombe. When we look like we might concede, he saves us at the last minute.

I was singing this in my garden after the game. My neighbours must think I'm mad but what a joy that was after soooooo f***ING long in League One!
So many positives today, on and off the pitch. As much as I missed not seeing the first game of the season with my lad (who is on holiday) it was lovely to go to game with my wife who enjoyed every minute.
As for the game, I thought Apter, Carey and Bell all had excellent FULL debuts, Kaminski did fine but the dithering on staying on or coming off his line was a bit of a worry, Kelman needs patience, experience at this level and support but thought he worked hard and showed some nice signs in the 18 yrd box.
Thought Cov, TC and Doc all had to grow into the game and they did, Cov having the best of games over that trio. Edwards, Jones and Ramsay were fantastic.
Knibbs was icing on the cake, I would have happily settled with a draw, but to score an injury time winner in that fashion felt so good.
Congrats to the team, Nathan, the coaches and us fans - we all showed up together, locked arms and if we do that another 45 times this season we will be just fine in this tier.
An ideal start and it was great to see a bigger crowd and the benefit that will bring to the local economy as well as the club. One thing that could usefully be addressed is getting passengers off the platform at Charlton station from packed trains rather more quickly than at a snail’s pace.
The problem is the lack of Oyster readers. Just 2 on each side, which is hopelessly inadequate for the crowds.
Back in the PL days, there was no tapping in and out, so crowds could just walk straight through.
Good point. Who would even raise that as an issue with tfl?

What a great day. Worth every minute of my five hour round journey time. Feels very different now. It's great to be back in the championship. Really impressed with the new players. Thought Miles physicality scared their defence and I think Tanto will be a handful for teams this season. Hard not to get carried away but feeling really positive and chipper tonight.
Very enjoyable afternoon and great to get the win. I thought there was a lot to take encouragement from and Nathan got the subs spot on.
i thought the crowd was a tad disappointing, albeit Watford had a cheek to sing “your ground’s too big for you” when their own capacity is only 22.000.
Like everyone else, absolutely glowing after that.
Everyone's covered pretty much everything, except for the one thing that gave me a pang of disappointment. The attendance. After all the noise from the club during the midweek, I was expecting 23k maybe 24k. As was Brownie, btw, and he's part of the club.
There were less Charlton fans there today than for the Burton game.
I remember @Airman Brown would mention that opening fixtures suffer a bit from people being on holiday. But it was a bit of an anti-climatic note to hear at the end of a great day in every other way.
Not sure what we can do about it, other than spread the word.

Lots of empty seats in Covered near me and West and East huge gaps. away end rammed
What a win and what a noise at the end. Defence was fucking amazing.
Only grumble was Kelman looked dog shit.
Kelman is gonna need Leaburn or Olaofe with him.
Or why not two out of Campbell, Leaburn or Olaofe without Kelman? There is no law saying that, just because we paid an arm and a leg for him, we have to play him right away, especially as we now have Knibbs to contribute goals.
I am not knocking Kelman. I think he is very talented, but we need to formulate a pattern of play that uses his talents. Today he was a fish out of water (no puns please).
Try another pairing against Stevenage, who are hard to score against, and see how that works. Or try Kelman with a different pattern of play.
Given this is me meeting my abosolute favourite Charlton player of all time and one of the greatest moments of my life, following a great Charlton win I wished I looked a lot happier!

Edwards was great, as was Ramsey and Jones. Really impressed with Bell and can see why he’s keeping Macca on the bench.
Nice to have strength on the bench, I thought Leaburn looked fit and strong and gave them something to think about.
Pleased for Macca to get some minutes.

Take a look at the movement of Lloydy in this clip (11-20 secs). Excellent.
