I've just had a look at late goals conceded by us. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but we've dropped 11 points with goals conceded in 80 or more minutes. That would put us 8th on 41 points.

    CAFC 1 - 2 Bristol Rovers    90+8
    CAFC 2 - 3 Port Vale           87
    Oxford 2 - 1 CAFC              85
    CAFC 2 - 2 Cambridge        87 and 90+6
    CAFC 1 - 1 Burton              90+1
    Leyton O 1 - 0 CAFC           80
    Bristol Rovers 2 - 1 CAFC   90+4
    CAFC 1 - 2 Oxford              85
    Port Vale 3 -3 CAFC            90+2
My word this looks worse than I thought in my head! Perhaps the Board can show this to Mickey A before they say goodbye?

(Pompey 76-90 tally is 8 scored, 5 conceded - stupid website arrow in the way)
Although interesting its a bit immaterial as the OP's point was how many points has it cost us (and other teams). You could be 5-0 up & let in 3 goals in added on time but still win.

It’s how many points won or lost by scoring/letting in late goals.
It gives a pretty good rough idea if you want to compare us against other teams though…

If you want Charlton specifics, goals 76+ and the change in points as a result below…

    Bristol R (H): after 76 mins 0-1 / -1 point
    Port Vale (H): after 76 mins 0-1 / -1 point
    Oxford (A): after 76 mins 1-0 / -1 point
    Stevenage (A): after 76 mins 0-1 / +1 point
    Wycombe (H): after 76 mins 2-0 / +2 points
    Exeter (H): after 76 mins 2-0 / 0 points
    Blackpool (H): after 76 mins 2-0 / +1 point
    Reading (H): after 76 mins 1-0 / 0 points
    Lincoln (A): after 76 mins 1-0 / 0 points
    Wigan (A): after 76 mins 2-0 / 0 points
    Portsmouth (A): after 76 mins 0-1 / +1 point
    Cheltenham (H): after 76 mins 1-0 / +2 points
    Cambridge (H): after 76 mins 0-2 / -2 points
    Burton (H): after 76 mins 0-1 / -2 points
    Orient (A): after 76 mins 1-0 / -1 point
    Bristol R (A): after 76 mins 1-1 / 0 points
    Oxford (H): after 76 mins 0-1 / -1 point

2 points worse off overall - we were in the positive by 4 points until this horrible December run turned this stat against us.
If games ended at 76 minutes we’d have drawn 2-2 today, thus no change in how better or worse off we would be.

30 points becomes 32 points and 13th becomes 11th (in reality 10th if you also take away the 2 points from Bristol Rovers also).
  • Regarding late goals it seems to me there’s always late goals in the Prem these days so maybe it’s not so unusual.

Just looking at yesterday’s FA Cup games as a sample, out of 19 games, 14 of them featured goals scored after the 80th minute. 2 of them had more than one goal scored after 80 mins.

As per my original post it’s been the last four and half seasons.

As soon as we scored the third, I whacked on a draw! We are so predictable! I wasn’t even watching the game I could just see it coming!

The four losses here would be

    Reading (A)
    Crawley (H)
    Wycombe (H)
    Blackpool (A)

It's a really weird feeling watching a game like Saturday's, where we were the better team, missed a few decent chances (or had them saved), then seeing the clock tick over 90 minutes and, instead of thinking "bollocks, we blown this", I felt fairly calm and still confident we could get a winner. It just never feels too late for us to score anymore, and the stats really back that up.

Great to be top. But is that from last season (it says 2024/25) only or does it mean from last season until today?

I think it means from the start of last season.

The best thing about this is that now all teams will fear us going into injury time. They know there is a culture in the club about scoring late goals and so will be more worried about it and defensive. Which will ultimately lead to what happened on Tuesday night, where players make mistakes.

This is solely about the ethos and drive of our mad manager who will not let standards drop for 96 minutes (or however long there is) and for always being bold and attacking in his substitutions.

I wonder how many equalisers/winners have we conceded under Jones in added on time? Barnsley away (which we also scored in added on time) and Southend last season are the only two I can think of off the top of my head. Probably been a few close ones like Millwall but can't think of many in added on time

    Blackpool away last season.

Copying the below from the West Brom post-match thread. This list doesn't include late consolation goals, or late goals that extend leads.

    ++++

Correct me where necessary, but I reckon these are the late decisive goals in our favour, this calendar year, 80+ mins.

    Bolton (away) 2-1 - Anderson 86
    Shrewsbury (home) 1-0 - Small 90+6
    Peterborough (home) 2-1 - Gillesphey 89
    Orient (away) 2-1 - Gillesphey 90+2, Ramsay 90+7
    Wycombe (home) 1-0 - Godden 81
    Watford (home) 1-0 - Knibbs 90+4
    Sheff Utd (away) 1-0 - Olaofe 90
    Hull (away) 1-1 - Berry 90+1
    West Brom (home) 1-0 - Carey 90+5

Late decisive goals not in our favour, this calendar year, 80+ mins.

    Blackpool (away) 2-2 - equaliser 87
    QPR (away) 3-1 - winner 84
    Millwall (home) 1-1 - equaliser 88

QPR was just a bad day in the office and one to simply write off and forget about. Millwall we were down to ten men so our usual game plan and generally better fitness levels, both of which usually give us a late advantage, were negated.

when teams start to realise that having the greater possession against us and running around a lot crashing into a brick wall defence is simply draining energy from the back end of the game then I suspect we will start to see more earlier Charlton goals and less in the final minutes.

The 1961 merchants could still not win today after going in front in added time :D
