A decent platform. The commentator has said that 90% of the team's batting first at Radlett win there but 313 is the lowest winning total. Middlesex, in putting us in, clearly think we aren't capable of getting that.

Ekansh out second ball trying to drive a wide one at backward point to an excellent diving catch. It looks a different game now.

The hard thing with cricket is the answer to that question will vary massively depending on the venue, the specific wicket and the make up of the team. I would say that for this match we're probably about 50 under par but I haven't watched a ball, that's just based on the history of the venue

Another hammering, we are completely out of our depth

To be fair, we partially made this more likely by leaving out Compton and Gilchrist.

In high scoring games, the experience of going on to make match winning centuries is what we're missing with no Compton or the injured Joe Denly and DBD.

Can the club sink much lower? I sincerely hope not.
  • Long term I think Kent now have to persevere with the younger players. Moving on from ageing and declining players will be a challenge for the county - unfortunate as it may be many of the injuries that have plagued the county this season could have been predicted by supporters.

Kent are hopefully trying to identify young players at other counties who find their own pathway to the first class cricket ‘blocked’ by established players and will be within budget.

It won’t be easy to attract better younger players. As well as good scouting and analysis Kent need some luck too. So far this season the recruitment process - both through domestic loans and overseas signings (Dudgeon apart) -  has been disappointing.

The competition has become what it was always intended to become. Second rate and a grounding for youngsters. We were never going to be competitive with a dozen missing and it is the experience gained by our four teenagers that will stand them in good stead moving forward. That said, Joe Denly is in the squad for the next game and one would expect him to use the remaining matches to prove his fitness for the upcoming Blast QF.

Hopefully the pitch will take spin, as we do seem way stronger in that department than in our depleted seam attack.

On that count I think Rizvi is going to have to show a bit more to earn a longer term contract - small sample but 0-142 from 22 overs with an ER of 6.45. His issue is that counties these days rarely carry more than two frontline spinners in their squad let alone two that both bowl leggies so he has to either look like something exceptional with the ball (Taz Ali, for example, with 12-203) or that his batting alone will get him in a side.

Leaning is a decent enough white ball bowler, plus if he's fit Joe Denly can bowl and Jaydn D, who while only 19, has played a decent number of 50 over matches.

Cohen and Klasssen went at 7.5 per over yesterday. Corey and Ekansh are very inexperienced bowlers.

I'm not disagreeing with you on that count and my comment was purely in relation to Rizvi. Ekansh is a batter who they are trying to turn into an all rounder but I'm not quite sure what Corey is. I've been following him a lot his season and do wonder if he's going to have the speed or guile to trouble a county opposition with the ball whereas his batting seems to come under most scrutiny when he's having to face spin. He's still only 19 and that was his first and only professional game for us or Lancashire, so he still has time to develop and clearly Cook and Hollioake saw enough to offer him a contract with us. Equally, it must be very hard for him being compared to not just his father (especially as he is a bit of clone in terms of action and batting style) but his younger brother too.

Rizvi for Cohen the only change. Northants won the toss and elected to bat.
