When you look back now, some of the players we were fielding under the likes of Holden and Appleton in particular, leave a shiver down your spine as to how they managed to get a gig at our great club.
    Mates of Charlie boy.
  • 1 win in 24 since he took over

    Could be worse  :)
  • 1 win in 34 if you add-on the end of his tenure with us.

How does he keep getting gigs??

Much the same as his time here over at poor old Shrewsbury.
Turned up. Told everyone that the squad was  terrible,unfit,....yada,yada,yada.
And then somehow managed to make them progressively worse!

    Fella should be struck off.
    Why?

He's been managing a long time at various levels. He's worked for several clubs now in trying circumstances. He is qualified. He hasn't failed everywhere. Apparently he interviews well, which might partly explain why he keeps getting gigs, and others working in the game must rate his coaching skills.

Club's have the right to effectively strike him off if they think he's unfit for the job by either not taking him on or sacking him, as we did, and rightly so.

I think he's entitled to earn his living from the game if clubs decide to take a chance on him. Caveat emptor.

    Another cracking result tonight

I think this will be his last league club when they get rid of him in a month or so.  Managed to build a career off the back of managing Pompey when they were going through all that financial trouble because he stuck it out, but he’s been like the kiss of death for such a long time now, wherever he turns up

I have to say, I’m so glad he’s at Shrewsbury.  Horrible club that we’ve seen far too much of in the last 10 years.  Really hope our paths don’t cross again for a good while - even better that they have Marquis
I’m not sure this is entirely fair. His subsequent brief tenures at both Blackpool and Blackburn Rovers after his time at Portsmouth did a bit of damage to his reputation.
Three seasons each at Oxford United and Lincoln City where he’s won a promotion, reached EFL Trophy and League One play-off finals would suggest that he wasn’t “the kiss of death” for that long a period given he was able to rebuild his career at both clubs.
His career seems to have hit the bricks since taking the Blackpool job again in 2022 and it doesn’t look like the slide is stopping any time soon.
Good point.  I’d completely forgotten about the Oxford success.
  • £50 on Swindon to win Saturday, keep rolling the winnings on to the oppo until he gets the sack...
  • There is no job for him in the EFL after this.

Will probably not get a job again.

    Not hard to see why

Wiki says 1 in 14 at a win ration of 7%.

Either way, his record is awful

  • From the official Shrewsbury site:

"The boss expressed his disappointment with the goals his side conceded and said he won't shy away from our start to the season. He also took responsibility for the performance and emphasised the importance of building from the back and keeping things tighter in defence."

It's surprising he mentions that importance because his teams never actually seem to be aware of it.

In fairness he will easily get a job in coaching. Some people just aren’t good managers but he had a good career in backroom roles before that
  • The director of football has taken the can for their start so Appleton has bought time.  I read an interview of his on BBC where he stated he will have control of transfers and be manager rather than coach from this point.
  • This fella gets more gigs than Oasis, unbelievable!

That sounds like a route to a successful season

Fingers crossed because it’s earning a lot of Charlton fans a lot of money at the moment. Just put a double on Shrewsbury and Wednesday’s opponents each week.

  • Would have definitely got us relegated to League 2. Tosser of a bloke
They sacked Holden too early & Appleton too late.
Even at the time I thought Holden was a surprising appointment, and the summer's pre season which he was in charge of left our players not fit enough.

A good number 2, he would have been fine doing the job Curtis Fleming does now but is too "nice" to be the main man.
  • The second-ever post in this thread, moments after the Appleton announcement, is a simple: "Oh dear."
  • I'm not telling him to his face that he's shit

I do wonder how he got those guns, with his hands in his pockets, must have bollocks like cannon balls.

If Holden can get gigs after his stint at Bristol I'm sure Appleton can.
  • We have had some tough times and some rubbish managers but for me nothing comes close to him. I had to stop watching his post match stuff as it was obvious he didn’t give a shit

Karel Fraeye made Appleton look like Jurgen Klopp.

Yes but that was the banter era. The Appleton period they were actually trying to make the club good. He was just shite.
