  • Why do they keep selecting Bethell? He's clearly not ready. Maybe pick him against Ireland if they want to develop him
It's going to screw his development, yes you've spotted he's a talent, so let him grt games at county level and keep an eye on his progress.

Atherton was clearly furious with that performance!

"They've got to get sharp and get serious" says Atherton. They were anything but serious. We had the captain, Brook, laughing with others their heads off in the field and then afterwards writing the game off as one of those things. There is no shame and no embarrassment or apology for the performance they put on for those who have paid to watch.

Take away Smiths 54 and the 2nd highest score for England was 15.
One of the most pathetic batting displays I've seen.

This England setup don't care about defeats, as long as they win more than they lose. They are VERY quick to mentally move on if they can't win, we saw that in the India series where they got weirdly irritated that India didn't shake hands on a draw earlier than they did.

Yes we don't want the bad old days of petrified players, afraid to make any mistakes, but things have gone too far the other way, when playing for England is treated like an exhibition match.

Smith & Extras scored 65, the other 10 batsmen 66. As you say, pathetic.

Here's an interesting stat - in the 14 series since the first Hundred game, we've lost 10 of the first matches. Working backwards chronologically, those series were against South Africa, India, West Indies, Australia, West Indies, New Zealand, South Africa, Australia, South Africa and India. Our wins in opening games of series came against Netherlands, Ireland, Bangladesh and West Indies.

If one takes into account our disastrous 2023 ODI WC campaign, it is blatantly obvious that we go into 50 over series totally undercooked and without any semblance of preparation and it takes us one or two matches to work out how to play the game.

I wish the coach wouldn't always be seen lounging on a chair, dark glasses on ,cap over face etc ..not really engaging body language. I get that the players like him and he has instilled positivity, taken pressure off the players  but I get the impression that all the above also instills a bit of "well we just don't care ".For all his talent I see this in Harry Brook ..I thought his handling of Sonny Baker was very poor yesterday .

If only there was a 50 over domestic competition to do so (every year)

He doesn't seem to be mature enough, yet

Doesn't seem a good choice to me either, but the problem is who does?

Duckett maybe the best of a bad bunch?

Get what we deserve for the ECB's disgusting lack of respect for the one-day domestic tournament

Compared to Bethell who's captaining the Ireland series, he's like Mike Brearley  :D

That's the thing though. They haven't been.

I thought brook’s comment about treating it like a practice session in the end was extremely disrespectful to those who paid to come watch. I get you want to convey a relaxed atmosphere for your players to play without fear, but there’s ways to do that without showing disrespect for the paying public.
  • Sam Curran and Jordan Cox should walk into the England white ball team.

Brook is an exciting player, but captain material?

Only player who walks into the team, has captaincy pedigree (captained England at age group level) and isn’t tarred with being part of the previous captain’s team. He’s clearly the stand out candidate after Buttler resigned.

    Courtesy of someone on "X".

Rob Key to the media: "I have to be honest with you guys, the schedule is ridiculous - most of the lads were only able to play 36 holes in the build up to the series."

Weather looking better for tomorrow. Looks like rain clearing by midday/ early afternoon. Might even start on time.

That had the feel of Charltons "effort" at Cambridge last week. Feel sorry for anyone who's parted with their hard-earned to sit in the rain at Lords tomorrow if they show a similar contempt for the match as Tuesday.

    Oh........

And England won't bat 50 overs anyway, so rain delays of a couple of hours won't matter...

I live fairly near Lord's, and it's raining at the moment. Unless it's localised, I can't see play starting on time.
  • ESPN Cricinfo are saying the shower just finishing now should be the last and we should get a complete game. The BBC by contract seem to be so gloomy about the weather than they haven't even put their live text commentary page up yet. Take your pick from those two views...

Morgan has just talked in terms of England wanting to rest players with games so close together. Baker might be dropped anyway but nobody else bowled more than 30 balls anyway and they fielded for little more than 20 overs!

We put the Saffers in, so at least I'll see some runs today.

I'm right in the far corner of the Compton,  a restricted view seat, so hopefully nobody will be caught in front of the Grandstand!

If Mahmood is fit has he played any red ball this year - would like him to make the ashes squad. And Olly Stone
  • The fast bowlers I would take to Oz, Carse, Atkinson, Archer, Wood( if fit ). and Tongue who will get some bounce.
