  • Latest long read is up on the site now - Lennie Lawrence.

“Derek Ufton, a fantastic fella, was a director. He had been a player at Charlton way back in the 1950s. He was on the board. Once he said to me: ‘Well, whatever happens to you in your football career - it can’t be any harder than this. So it will stand you in good stead’. He was dead right, as well."

  • Another very good read which makes you think. I loved Lennie, still do, but in the run-up to the BTTV campaign I started to resent his lack of enthusiasm for it, and especially when he cleared off when we were close to the return but stumbling a bit. Reading this, I see his side a bit better. He had worked wonders keeping us where we were, the players didn't have any relationship to the Valley, and now the best ones were being sold against his wishes. He was paid to deliver results on the pitch, and selling these players was making his task more difficult.

Although he doesn't quite match up to Curbs achievements, he can argue that without his own excellent work, we might not have survived or been able to return when we did. So after Curbs, he is the second best manager of my Charlton Life, which started in '62.
  • “It’s funny, I often talk to players now, especially midfield ones, about getting in the box and scoring goals. But I do think, looking back, that sometimes I went a little bit rogue. I don’t think I’d be my own manager’s dream player because I became a bit obsessed with scoring."

Interview with Johnnie Jackson is up on Substack (this one about his playing days at CAFC) - also talks about being called into a meeting to discuss sacking Karel Fraeye...with Karel in the room!

Lovely donation to the museum yesterday

Rich Cawlet's press pass from the play-off final in May.

The South London Press had already closed so this was his last accreditation as a SLP writer

I don't seem to receive email notifications for the podcasts, like I do for the articles.

I subscribe to the following. Any idea? @richcawleySLP @LouisMend

That's odd mate. Hasn't gone through to your Junk Mail folder by any chance?

Otherwise worth checking the Manage Your Subscription page to make sure audio emails are turned on.
