MATCH PREVIEW: Preston North End vs Charlton Athletic - Saturday 4th October 2025 - 3pm Kick-Off

Preston North End vs Charlton Athletic
Saturday 4th October 2025 - 3pm Kick-Off
Referee: James Linington
Introduction
It can be argued that Charlton were fairly rewarded for their efforts on Tuesday night, historically a trip to Pride Park is never a hunting ground, so to get back to back wins at said venue would have been further proof of our progression in the last twelve months - This Saturday we return to the road, with a trip to the North West of England on the cards... With a Yellow weather warning in the region, it could well be a case of getting back home with as many points as possible, in what is an early six pointer as the Play-Offs hots up
The Opposition
Name: Preston North End (7th) - Manager: Paul Heckingbottom
Ground: Deepdale
Previous League Result: Hull 2-2 Preston
Preston themselves come into this fixture, having been pegged back from a trip on the road in midweek. Tuesday evening saw our hosts taking an early two goal lead away at Hull City, however the hosts came out for the second half, like Derby, with a point to proof... and well... they came away with that point!!
In terms of the season as a (brief) whole so far, and am sure the Lilywhites will be impressed with how their season has started, they sit in 7th, just a point ahead of the Addicks, and are outside of the Play=Offs at this early stage, purely courtesy of Goal Difference. Until their capitulation against Hull in midweek, their defence was as strong as the visitors this Saturday, meaning that, combined with the conditions, this could well be a tight affair with one goal deciding the outcome... Preston will be confident though, given they've lost just the once this season, a 1-0 defeat at Portsmouth, whilst two games at Deepdale have resulted in draws, a 2-2 with Middlesbrough, and a 0-0 score-line on Saturday against Bristol City.
This is of course going to be our second visit to Deepdale in 2025, back in January the Addicks made the trip up to Lancashire for an FA Cup 3rd Round tie, with the hosts narrowly coming away with a potentially undeserved win on that particular occasion - However it did seemingly convince Preston to sign Thierry Small in the summer, the Left Wing-Back has unsurprisingly been popular in the North West, and will be coming into this game off the back of scoring his first goal for the club (he opened the scoring at Hull), and will be a fascinating match up against the right of our Defence.
Charlton Team News
Who starts on Saturday, after a tough match against Derby in midweek will certainly be interesting, and given the amount of Football played already, am sure most of us would expect to see changes this Saturday. I for one, have certainly expected to see changes at Right-Back, but given James Bree's contributions in front of goal, I expect us to go with a largely unchanged eleven from the team that started on Tuesday night
The likes of Sonny Carey, Charlie Kelman and Tyreece Campbell in attack were withdrawn with plenty of minutes to spare, so should be slightly rested ahead of Saturday, whilst there is also the prospect of an International break coming up, for maximum recovery. The prospect of Miles Leaburn, or Tanto Olaofe starting in place of Kelman or Campbell, will be tempting for many fans. But the lack of running from either individual on Tuesday night, combined with the fact that our press needs to lead from the front, makes me think that Nathan Jones will continue opting for a settled side once more.
There could be one new debutant in the twenty man squad, with Onel Hernandez signing on a free transfer in midweek
Kaminski
Ramsay - Jones - Gillesphey
Bree - Coventry - Docherty - Bell
Carey
Campbell - Kelman
Substitutes: Maynard-Brewer - Burke - Apter - Costello = Anderson - Hernandez - Knibbs - Leaburn - Olaofe

Great preview as always FA.
Getting up at 6 on Saturday for the long treck to Preston.
QPR aside I think we have played well in all our league games so far and hopefully this will be the case on Saturday.
A draw would be a very good result against a decent Preston side, a win would be amazing.
Expecting a tough game with us sharing the points.
1 1 with Kelman getting of the mark.7 -
Really looking forward to this one, I think this is our hardest test so far this season (although each and every new game feels that way)
They're a competent side Preston who are surprising a few with their bright start, only 1 loss in 8, so it will take a good attacking team to beat them. Can that be us? I am not so sure, I think we are devoid of ideas in attacking apart from a few moments of brilliance this season, compliments Carey and Bree.
I think a side like Preston are a bad match up for us. Combative side that don't create much, but being at home I will say gives them the edge. Expecting an ugly game.
I am going to say 1-1 but it would be nice to sneak a win.4 -

Amazing what getting sent off against Millwall for a daft second card can do and costing Cafc a win !
I personally thought talk that he would move on to the Premier at the next window or next summer after his 10/10 sublime performance against Bristol City game a bit OTT considering Kayne had only played a couple of games in the Championship and the 23 and soon to be 24 year old has played lower down the pyramid other than 2 games at Saints in the Premier before being released.
Kayne had a wobbly 1st half but still made vital good tackles and blocks in the game especially in the 2nd half again at Derby.
Ramsay is still in credit and deserves to be the RCB against Preston. Only just noticed that Kayne apologised to his team mates and fans for his bad decision making in the 'Derby' and costing Cafc a much needed local boost.
I predicted that Small would be 50% better this season and mainly play on the left. Preston are strong this season and the enthusiastic Thierry will do well; though obviously I just want him to run the ball off the pitch and not waltz around 3 defenders whether playing on the left or right which he is capable of !
Charlton's best chance of a positive result is if I tip Preston to win so I will go 2-1 to the North end and I will love to eat humble pie.
We are doing just fine so far in this 2nd tier company.

It is of course the Thierry Small derby and I would like a bit of revenge after our big loss last time.

Time to change personnel a bit, time for some r & r .. always difficult to change a very successful line up, however, at Derby there were signs of form dropping off and just tired legs after some tough games.
Carey has covered miles as has Campbell, both could do with a sit down for a game.
Knibbs to get a start in midfield, with a choice between Tanto & Leaburn up front with Hernandez waiting in the wings. Very bad news is that Josh Edwards is likely to be unavailable for quite a long time
Paul Heckingbottom has got his team playing well. For me, I'd be happy with a point from this one0 -
Definitely think we’ll need to score to get anything out of this one. Heart says 1 - 1 but head saying PNE. 2 - CAFC 01

This is going to be a really tough game. Preston looking confident and have made some very good signings, including Thierry Small. Good manager too.
I would be very happy with a point.

Preston are doing better than most would have anticipated, and going by form alone, I wouldn't be upset with a draw. If we perform like we did against Blackburn and Derby (1st half), I think we can nick this one, but it will be a close affair.0

Referee: James Linington……. One of the worst 90 mins of refereeing ever seen at the valley it was a Tuesday night at home to Peterbro when gave them a late penalty but he was basically booed through out the game from charlton fans
Peterborough continued their perfect start to the League One season with a 1-0 victory at Charlton secured by Jason Cummings' controversial penalty.
The hosts had remained on course for a point until the 89th minute when referee James Linington penalised Lewis Page for his challenge on Ivan Toney, just moments after the same player had been in the middle of a handball claim at the opposite end of the field.

This is a tough game and could very easily be one game too far for us … the conditions are going to be terrible but I feel we saw the affect of championship football with two games in 4 days we looked tired , the pace and movement in this league is fast and our pressing game has to be quicker .. so tiredness will be an issue until we get use to it .. Ramsey looked poor on Tuesday but think he will stay in , Carey who looked shuttered in Tuesday after only 55 mins might miss out .. and again Campbell still not done anything to warrant another start ..so might be a few changes but i fear for this one 2-0 to Preston

See this as a game that requires as much physicality and experience as possible. Conditions are going to be strong winds and Preston isn’t an easy place to go on a nice day.
Berry and Hernandez to be in the squad. Anderson the unlucky one to drop out.
Would take a draw but this level you never know what can happen. We dealt with conditions well in Sheffield so maybe we will again.4 -
Think this might be a game too far in this little run. Long way to go after a long journey in the week and thought we looked a little leggy against Derby.
A narrow loss but hoping for a point.3 -

James Linington… we’ve had some shocking referee performances over the years at The Valley but I will never forget that name. His refereeing during that Peterborough game was so, so bad.5

Not a pleasant experience being taken up the M6 ,especially if you ve been taken up the M1 a few days before. This won't be a game for the faint hearted with rain and wind forecast and Preston vying for the play off places .However they will be just as tired as we are having played at Hull in the week. I am sure they will make changes as will we .I expect us to be pragmatic with Burke in for Ramsay and Bree to start right side.Maybe Tanto to start over Campbell but they can all have a well earned rest after this. Not a game for the purists I can foresee a hard fought 0-00

Preston....ffs. can't wait until we get out of this League & can play some proper Norven teams 🙄😀6

Weather conditions could play apart in this one. Use to travel with my heart in my mouth never knowing what kind of performance you get. But now… head says 2-2 another good point on the road, heart is saying 0-1.0

Just to make anyone aware as well, Preston will be participating in a minutes applause for a fan Bobby Wane who passed.

Be a nice touch to join them in their applause.21
