Day 6 - fantastic fighting spirit from Daieisho and Mitakeumi. Great bout.
Some terrific throws on show today from rank and filers.
  • Wow day 12, sets up the last few days of the Bashou nicely!

Kotozakura withdraws on day 14 after an incredible victory over Hoshoryu. I assume he was due to face Onosato with the Yokozunas facing off on the final day? A massive disappointment. He seemed to be back on form for the first time this year, was he producing these performances whilst injured?!

Disappointing, especially as Kotozakura knew he'd injured himself during his win over Hoshoryu.
An earlier decision to withdraw would have enabled them to schedule another opponent for Onosato. Also would have kept the Basho alive for Takanosho and Aonishiki prior to their bouts today.
Can't blame Hoshoryu for Henka-ing Wakatakakage, but it's not a great way for a Yokozuna to win.
Still we have the decisive bout(s) tomorrow and a guaranteed Yokozuna win.

  • There were some boos when he did it, very 'Australian cricket team'.

Looks like Wakatakakage who was tipped for Ozeki will drop to komusubi with his make-Koshi. Such a shame and surely just a minor set back. Aonishiki has proven to be the real deal for a fourth time and must be next inline to join a lonely Kotozakura. Having said his countryman was lucky to not be relegated, Shishi has only gone and recorded a double digit victories!

If Hoshoryu wins we get a rematch in the play-off. We all remember how the last  day of the Natsu bashou went. A finely poised climax!
  • Wow and double wow.
    Fantastic.

I like how the Yokozuna's fly in first, the Sanyakus in J (Business) and the rank and filiers in economy, l assume two per a row! 😃

Gutted not to be going, but the prices were insane.

It's going to be on BBC. Hopefully they will have the NHK team over and not have a Dan Walker type.

    Ridiculous prices.
I was fortunate to go for 2 days to the 1991 event - had seats with wife and mother-in-law a couple of rows back from the Dohjo on one of them ..... bit of a step up for the mother-in-law from ringside for the wrestling at the Fairfield Halls :D
Couldn't be bettered as an experience for me so happy to be an armchair spectator for this one.
Should be a cracker - Aonishiki to lift the prize!

If you don't mind planning next summer's holidays around it, and aren't tied to school holidays, there's a 2-day weekend exhibition event in Paris next June. Cheap seats at the back are 81 Euros and aren't quite all gone yet. It's at the Bercy arena, where the wheelchair basketball was during the Paralympics last year.

Cheers mate, 2 €81 tickets purchased! In arenas like that (and the O2) even the nose bleeds have decent views. I'm gutted to have missed out at the Royal Albert Hall, the venue that was the inspiration for the original Ryougoko Kokugikan and probably the highest venue in the world.

Those prices compared to what is charged in Japan. 😬

Could be a Fusensho win for Aonishiki tonight if they can't prize Atamifuji off the bus in time

Was really interested in this until I saw the prices.

I feel like this is the case with everything now. NFL, WWE, some gigs, sumo. Just feels more practical to watch it online for free.

The fact that myself and Peanut aren't going says a lot. NFL probably led the way with the insane ticket prices. Fans need to vote with their feet and not go, WWE attendances are dropping.

Very entertaining day 1  - understandably not quite the intensity of a regular Basho and a couple of the early bouts a bit exhibitiony but some good stuff from the big boys. Aonishiki’s inner thigh throw the pick for me.
    Oyasumi nasai.

Very relaxed, especially the bouts before the interval. I don't think the fans got their money's worth.

Ultra competitive first bout tonight - Shishi overcoming the determined Ryuden.
Go on folks, give it a bash.
Day 3 now live on BBC Red Button (970 on Freesat)

Good to see proper bouts tonight.
Ura does a Ura-special on Fujinokawa. Brilliant.
Tobizaru 2-0 - Flying and Monkeying; winding up Kotoeiho matching his super high and long Shiko foot stomp and then bamboozling him.
    Very entertaining first half.

And ditto for the 2nd half.
Intensity not much short of full Yusho standard. Bodes well for the climax over the weekend.

Entertaining clown-show by Tobizaru and Shishi just then, but I'm not sure I'd have been thrilled if I'd taken out a second mortgage for a ticket.

    Fucking ace.

A great way to take advantage of the more exhibition-style format of this event and there being less riding on the outcome. Not that Ura needs an excuse to try something high-risk and spectacular, but that was awesome. And exactly what people are paying their money for.
