Alan Mwamba Signs Long Term Contract

Charlton Athletic are delighted to announce that academy star Alan Mwamba has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

The midfielder joined the Addicks’ academy at U12 level and signed his first professional contract in July 2024, before earning his senior debut two months later.

Manager Nathan Jones commented: "I’m delighted Alan has signed a new contract with the club. He’s a wonderful young player with a really bright future. We handed him his debut against Cambridge United last year and he’s continued to progress since then, so I’m really pleased he’s committed his future to the club."

After putting pen to paper, Mwamba said: "It’s a blessing to sign a new contract and be recognised as someone who deserves one. It encourages me to push on and show what I can bring as a player and also as a person. I’ve been here since U12s and I feel like it’s been a really good journey with ups and downs. To get to this stage shows that if I keep doing what I’ve been doing then I can make it even further."

Good news. I've liked what I've seen on him and he looks physically capable but more calm on the ball than some of our other young midfielders. Seems like one Jones is very fond of too
  • Good news. I always find this kid's name amusing. Nothing wrong with being an Alan or a Mwamba, but they just don't feel like a natural match.

A shame we don't have more cup games to play him in as he will find first team minutes hard to come by. Jones clearly rates him highly though

A loan out to a League 1 or 2 club might well be the way forward in the short-term.

Can he play left wing back?
  • Excellent news. Keep smashing it Al

I think that's unlikely. NJ seems to like letting players experience the first team a decent amount before going on loan. For me his comments about Fullah not going on loan will also apply to Mwamba, he'll be training with the first team until he gets a chance to play

He isn’t fit at the moment.

He'd fit right in with the rest of our left backs then!

Do you think he is good enough for an EFL loan?  I know nothing about him, but I wonder if national Leaguemaybe better for his first mens action, plus he could go now.

The one thing good about the EFL Cup (Or whatever the Johnstone Paint Trophy is called now) is that we could blood the youngsters.

Great news. Watching the u21 streams last season he’s probably the player I saw make the most progress - early on last season as a player stepping up to the u21s a year early, he was often giving the ball away too easily.

By the end of the season I saw why NJ rates him so highly. He was keeping possession much better and showing he can win the ball, compete physically and add to our attacks.

Very much a box to box CM in the Anderson or Cousins mould, and like them I’m sure he’d do a good job if asked to play a more defensive or attacking midfield role, or in another position.

I suppose it's too much to ask for to have any clue how long "long term" is? 2 years? 3?

Based on how NJ rates him and the fact he was 18 when the season started a 3 year deal with the club option of an extra year would make the most sense

Guess this belongs in here , interesting interview on Cawleys Substack where Danny Cowley mentions he had a loan deal agreed for Alan to go to Colchester in Jan but he got injured.

Wonder if this will be revisited in the summer.

Excellent player. First saw him as a 16 year old. He played at right back but was later converted to central midfield. Is strong can run with the ball and can score a goal. I think he could be in the first team squad next Season.

Totally ran a recent U21 game from central midfield.

Jones will love his strength, tackling and skill.

Mwamba and Mbick are effectively in competition with Anderson and Leaburn as similar types of players. I wouldn't rule out either overtaking them, they're probably closer than it seems, other than in experience.

I'd guess you're not far wrong there.

Good old fashioned English name. He must be the last of a dying breed.

Can't be many young Alan's about these days.

How much game time has he had this season?

It does seem he's had some lengthy spells out injured, so maybe a loan spell next?

All of them are still so young.
That includes TC, Mbick, Kanu, Mwamba, Anderson, Mitchell,  Fullah and quite a few others.
The hardest leap of all is becoming an established and credible pro. It hasn’t been overnight for Elewere, or Hackett-Fairchild, or Wiredu.
Fans need patience to let fruit ripen.

As long as we get to see him play and a fair few games before he gets poached and ends up elsewhere....perhaps never to be heard of again.

Potentially one of the youngsters we can start seeing a little bit more of once we’re officially safe

It will be interesting to me to see if NJ will play any youngsters when safe.  He seems the type of manager who will play a majority of starters until the very end.  Nothing to base that on, just a hunch given how hyper competitive he is

Jones wants to finish as high up the league as possible. He won't experiment.
