Sad news re the passing of former Charlton Athletic player Marvin Hinton at the age of 85

Marvin played 145 League and Cup games for Charlton Athletic between 1957 and 1963 scoring two goals before joining Chelsea for £30,000 in August 1963

    Classy player who I only saw from 62-3 when he was shipped off to Chelsea.

    Frank Haydock proved to be a bloody good replacement though.

    Another of my boyhood heroes gone 😞. I’ll never forget his performance in the FA Cup 5th round 1962 at Aston Villa (lost 1-2) when he had Derek Dougan in his pocket, whose whinging to the ref eventually got Marvin booked. Elegant player for a Centre Half who loved a slide tackle and England U23 International who went onto bigger things with Chelsea, RIP.

    Too young (just!) to remember him in a Charlton shirt but his Chelsea career showed what a fine footballer he was.

    Edit: Just had a look at his Wiki page and it includes this:          

    Hinton began his football career with Charlton Athletic F.C. having overlooked his local club Crystal Palace

    So not just a fine player but also a very good judge!

    Like Billy Bonds a player from the Charlton ranks that went just before I got to see them.  Two great players.  Sad to lose both in the same week.

    As has been mentioned by others a classy cultured center half loved watching him, he read the game so well.  One of the many good players sold off by MG to the detriment of CAFC.

    RIP Marvin...bit before my time but dad and uncle and aunt would have seen many of his games for us.

    When I first watched Charlton in 1968, I was given a roll call of players who Charlton sold and went on to greater things by the older supporters in my company, Marvin Hinton was the first of those players, and as has been said, he was one of the first footballing centre half's, RIP Marvin.

    Saw him in my first season supporting Charlton but better recollection of his skills playing for Chelsea. Believe Frank Haydock came in to replace him for the 1963/64 season when we came 4th in the Second Division.

    A truly class defender,unhurried,stylish a pleasure to watch.I was distraught when he went to Chelsea,so many good players sold in that period.

    Such a classy player…..smooth and unhurried, his sliding tackles were a sight to behold, not only did he win the ball so cleanly but more often than not, uncannily came away with it.
