  • If expected teams win their group, England’s likely path in the knockouts:

RO32: 3rd placed team in Atlanta, Wed 1st July

RO16: Mexico in Mexico City, Sun 5th July

QF: Brazil in Miami, Sat 11th July

SF: Argentina in Atlanta, Wed 15th July

F: Spain/France in New York, Sun 19th July
Brazil would be delighted by that outcome if we faced them in the World Cup - Am pretty sure that every other occasion we've faced them in the Finals, Brazil have gone on to win the whole thing

It might not exactly be the easiest path to the final, but Mexico in Mexico City would be an awesome experience for those who got to go. Brazil in Miami would be pretty special, too.

I'll be sickened if Ireland don't qualify.

    They'll have S.Korea, S.Africa and Mexico. It'll be a fun group

Also, that was one of the worst things I've ever seen ever. Felt bad for the woman who was presenting with Rio, he's an awful gobshite

Had no clue that only the bottom team in the group goes home.....is that right  ? So you can come 3rd & still go through to the knockout stages ?  Wowzers.

I'm quite happy with England's group draw. It's more challenging than it could have been but I still expect us to win it. England need more games against half decent opposition before the latter stages.

Shame there's a few groups with quite a low standard overall but all the host nations & Belgium were top seeds. I love the world cup but if feels like the expanded tournament will take away quality and jeopardy from the groups. Hope I'm wrong on that because the groups in Qatar were fantastic.

Well, the new 48-team format has arrived… and honestly? It feels like someone fed the old format after midnight. It’s bloated, confusing, and somehow manages to mean absolutely nothing because all the teams pretty much get through to the next round anyway.

And speaking of bloated... ticket prices! FIFA somehow looked at the cost of living crisis and said, “You know what would help? Charging fans the price of a used car just to watch a group-stage game.”

Then we had the draw itself… and the FIFA President, Gianni "infatuated" who never misses an opportunity to show he loves the spotlight almost as much as football fans love complaining about him. The whole “peacemaker” with Donald J routine was delivered with the subtlety of a foghorn. Robbie Williams looked like he wanted the stage to swallow him whole, and who could blame him when the four ball-pickers were American sporting icons parachuted in as if FIFA thought, “Football? America? Same thing, right?”Funniest moment of the night? Shaquille O’Neal dwarfing Kevin Hart

And England’s draw? Honestly, who cares. If they don’t win the group, Tommy T might as well grab the nearest flight back across the Atlantic and call it a day.Three host countries, endless travel, ticket prices that make your bank account cry… yes, the format sucks, the distances suck, the prices suck and somehow we’ll all still end up watching next summer.

Because, despite FIFA’s best efforts, it’s still the beautiful game.
They’re just doing everything they can to make it a lot less beautiful.

Being in the last group could be good for us as it means we don't play until 6 days after the opening game and that extra rest could help us after a long season.

It means we don't play until 3.5 weeks after the last day of the PL season and 19 days after the CL final.

Can FIFA be any more toadying, sycophantic and money obsessed than awarding peace prizes? Perhaps the Nobel committee can start awarding golden boots!

NO, Infantino's tongue must be a bright orange colour now.

The last World Cup had 64 matches from start to finish.

Next year there will be 68 matches just to eliminate a third of the teams.

Yeah, it was very complicated with the various requirements which didn't help him. It was very hard to tell if he was joking or being genuinely annoyed at times which was funny

What about the cost of the extension to put it in though.

The organisers tried their hardest to make it as silly and amateurish as possible. I doubt they would have done something so bad for the NFL or NBA.

BBC or ITV... They've not released the schedule though, as that'll take a few days / weeks because they've got to agree amongst themselves who gets what. As its usually a case of one giving the other the Quarter-Final / Semi-Final preference, whilst the other gets England vs Croatia for example.

So they've split it into East, Central and West but one of our games is in Dallas, which is central, and the other 2 in East? Doesn't make any sense
