Why does T.Campbell keep getting selected

Yeah, he (finally) scored, but that doesn't change my opinion that he's L1 standard and a squad filler/impact sub for us.
I'm not a hater, and genuinely hope he develops and comes good, but for now, he's too limited, too predictable and doesn't fit into our system.4 -
How does he not fit our system? He’s literally the only player capable of playing the hybrid LW/ST role that our usual system needs. He’s basically a perfect fit which is why Jones loves him and will continue to pick him. None of our other players are fit enough to do ittangoflash said:Yeah, he (finally) scored, but that doesn't change my opinion that he's L1 standard and a squad filler/impact sub for us.

He is a winger, so his job is not to score goals the we'd expect from forwards. Doesn't play well with Fuller (that is why Jones is swapping them throughout the match).Him and Leaburn have potential at this level and I sure he'll learn in the coming years, the more they play the more they learn. He was over hyped last year, and that is why the expectation is high, which is unfair on the kid.

It’s all well and good saying he should be an impact sub, but who do you start instead?JustFloydRoad said:Olaofe isn’t fit enough to start games regularly. Apter doesn’t play on the left. And neither of them can do the running that TC does in that role for more than about half an hour
Fullah maybe, but he’s an 18 year old kid that we really shouldn’t be relying on too much. And again just on fitness levels as an 18 year old just starting to play men’s football he just won’t be able to do it like TC does week in week out
TC would get more goals and assists probably if he was just used as an impact sub and would look much better. But what use is that when the team is worse for the first 65 minutes of a game. The 2 games he hasn’t started we’ve got good results in, but we were very lucky in both to still be in the game at half time and that luck won’t continue
I wouldn’t start TC every game, though at the moment we are low on options so it’s hard not to do so. The sweet spot for me would be on average he should start 2 out of every 3 games. He’s in our best team so he should start most games, but then the odd sub appearance keeps him fresh9 -

The kid hasn't had a break since the playoffs, jetting off on international duty and normally not returning until the Thursday and then playing again on Saturday.
How he hasn't picked up any sort of injury while half the team falters is amazing.17 -
This is such a good point, he is incredibly durable. He doesn’t even ever have the tape strapping players like Anderson did towards the end of last seasonCaptainRobbo said:

An injury would probably do him good so he gets a break. Wouldn’t do us any good though as we’d struggle without him
Would be amazing to see our players at the World Cup but from a Charlton perspective, Jamaica not qualifying and TC having a summer off would be ideal1 -

No way was he overhyped last year - we wouldn’t have gone up without him - up there with Lloyd Jones last year in importance to the teamJustFloydRoad said:tangoflash said:Yeah, he (finally) scored, but that doesn't change my opinion that he's L1 standard and a squad filler/impact sub for us.

Because he’s clearly shattered from about 50 mins. He was better at the weekend though so maybe his fitness is improvingDOUCHER said:

He's a player that thrives on confidence. Once he started scoring last season, he started doing it regularly, because he was suddenly confident in his own ability..
When he's not doing well, his head drops and he stops taking risks and starts passing backwards, or doesn't take his man on, bottles challenges etc.
I said on here last week that he should start taking on whoever he needs to, in order to attack the box, because he has the ability to beat 2 or three players on the run.
I was told that it was ridiculous to think that he should beat more than one defender.
Well if JRC can dribble past 3 defenders, then TC is certainly capable of doing so as he's a winger and his speciality is taking on and beating defenders.4 -
He looked like he could barely walk by the time he was subbed on Saturday. He is fit enough to start games, but he’s not fit enough to start every game. If we have a 3 game week, TC can start all 3 games and even play a 90 if needed, all while doing a lot more running than Tanto. Tanto just can’t do that without gassing out, it’s been obvious from watching him this season that he’s not been fit enough to start games week in week out. Early on he did a couple of interviews where he said he was knackered and that was only after sub appearances.DOUCHER said:

Think it depends on the role and position. As the solo forward he probably can do a full 90, but has nowhere near TC’s engine to play that LW/ST role for the full 90DOUCHER said:

What's the history with you and the academy? You've again given Campbell and Anderson low marks, despite them both having a big impact on the result and the performance.RonnieMoore said:Yes he scored but Leaburn was right behind him as well .. but took advantage of Birmingham not really settling after our sub and failed to pick him up …. It’s obvious from watching any game he’s played more than 45 minutes in. On Saturday he was better but still flagged towards the end and couldn’t run by the time he was subbed off. His last start and only 90 minutes was Wrexham where he was alright in the first half and then again was visibly running a lot less and did nothing in the second half and looked knackered.DOUCHER said:Sorry, I’m not having the reason Tanto doesn’t start is because he’s not fit enough - he’s 25 years old and been injury free all season - utter codswollopHe’s fit enough to start a game, but not fit enough to do 90 minutes and probably not fit enough to start every game which is why he’s been used mostly from the bench
It’s also to do with the TC role. Jones says he’s running 12km a game with 1km of that being sprints. Other than maybe Coventry I don’t think any of our players are capable of that distance and intensity, Tanto definitely isn’t5 -
He's 26. It's an issue of intensity and stamina. He'd no doubt be capable of playing the full 90 in a team where he wasn't expected to press like a lunatic all game but Nathan Jones teams ask a great deal of all the outfield players. I'm sure he'll adapt with a bit of time, a lot of the reason it takes Jones teams a while to click is them getting used to the physical requirements. Knibbs is the same, supposedly a good presser but looks like he can't sustain it at the moment. It's a different kind of fitness required to what a lot of players are used toDOUCHER said:Sorry, I’m not having the reason Tanto doesn’t start is because he’s not fit enough - he’s 25 years old and been injury free all season - utter codswollop5 -

Tanto might, might be able to play that hybrid LW/ST role, but I don't think he can do it for 90 minutes. And then past that you have...Miles, who isn't that type of striker. Even when everyone is fit, the one who I think is supposed to be natural cover for TC is Onel Hernandez, who hasn't shown himself to be up to the task (and is hurt anyway).
For me, TC starts next to Tanto on Saturday, with Tanto playing the more traditional #9 role. And then Fullah starts at LWB. TC will need to provide cover to that side because Fullah is young and raw.
Once Kelman and a LWB come back/get fit (Russilon), then we should be reassessing TC's role in the team. But at the moment, there's no one else.4 -
PWR. Needs to wind his neck in after that celebration. The fans have sung his name since day one, he’s been poor this season and rightly come into some criticism. To throw a tantrum like that is naive.20

Fitness, intensity and sustainability is everything in Jones teams.
Clearly some of the players that we currently have cannot sustain that intensity. Some of them are just plain not good enough for this level. Some of them Jones himself has brought in.
We all know that L.Jones is running on empty but he will run until he drops. Others are on their way back hopefully.
The system of wing backs stands or falls on the fitness, skill and quality of the two wingbacks. If that is lacking whether through injury or lack of quality then it doesn't work well.
The same is happening with Manu at the moment albeit at a higher level. They do not have the right players to play Amorim's preferred system - neither do we at present to play Jones's.
I know the original comment was about Tanto's fitness but TC is also clearly having to run and not stop in every game and play outside his comfort zone and ability and this may or may not be why his stats are not good in terms of final ball delivery and goals Time will tell.........0 -
He may be knackered because he isn't starting regularly but that isn't the reason why he isn't starting regularly - give him 2 or 3 games on the spin and he'll have as much stamina as anyone else - we haven't signed a professional football player who can't play for 90 minutesNabySarr said:

He does need to toughen up.
Did not challenge at a 50/50 ball. Middlesbrough defender came away with the ball which led to a goal.
Sorry he plays like in a youth match.
25 appearances 1 goal
Use him as a sub now.
I would hope for a winger(Striker) to score 7 to 10 over a season. He should have 3 to 4 goals by now
1 -
I’d hope we’d also have a striker with better returns than 1 in 13 1 in 18 and 1 in 19 but here we are. That being said I would bench TC not because I don’t think he deserves it but his 2 bench appearances have resulted in a goal and assist. Quite funny how our best two strikers are which ever ones are sat on the benchFansince1963 said:He does need to toughen up.

Some good quotes from NJ about TC on Cawley’s latest article. Says TC moves and trains likes a Premier League level player.2

I know what he means, there’s no doubt about his pace, he’s strong for his size and fitter than many of us probably realised.Callumcafc said:Some good quotes from NJ about TC on Cawley’s latest article. Says TC moves and trains likes a Premier League level player.
I’m less convinced he’s got the technical ability of a PL player, but he’d likely look better if we had more of the ball, had better attacking players and he didn’t have to do so much running out of possession.
For that reason I wouldn’t rule out him stepping up as the team (hopefully) continues to evolve and improve.3
