Draught Guinness at home

I like Guinness on draught in pubs. And I also like the Guinness that comes in cans with a widget. In fact, I think that's a great drinking-at-home drink.

But now there's "NitroSurge" (what a terrible, terrible name for a beer product) which comes in slightly larger cans and recommended to pour using a NitroSurge device (c.£30).

Does anyone have experience with these new devices? Where are they on the invaluable-gimmick scale? How much - if at all - better is a NitroSurge-poured, at-home Guinness, compared to a normal, widget-poured draught Guinness?

And, after how many Guinesses can you no longer notice the difference?

It's better than the ones with the widget, definitely, not far off (potentially impossible to tell the difference) to the quality of a pub poured pint in my experience.

The cans are more expensive than the widget cans though.

I reckon people who say they can tell the difference are lying...

I can confirm that this is most definitely NOT the case!!  The man spends as long as it takes to pour one, setting his Guinness up to take the perfect picture of each first pint in each pub he sups one in.  Dedicated lad 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😉

You can use the nitrosurge on normal cans. Plenty of YouTube videos showing you how.

I'm tempted by this. I think Guinness is pretty awful in at least 60% of pubs, and excellent in less than 5%. But when it's good, it's an absolute delight.

London Black can also be great when you can find it.
  • Quit alcohol 4 years ago this Jan. The introduction of 0% Guinness is quite possibly one of the most momentus events in human history.

The Rising Sun in Carter Lane near St Pauls does a brilliant pint of Guinness.

Spent the last three years living not far from the Dacre, but never went in there! If I knew they did a good Guinness... Moved away now.

Most pubs Guinness tastes like 2p coins.

I’m told the Guinness in the Lord Herbert is very good and in the Old Mill it’s good.

Genuinely never been able to tell the difference between any Guinness ever. Apart from once in new York where I'm sure it was fizzy.

Black cab stout, I wasn’t keen on it when I tried it. Also £3 more a pint than the Guinness in Roses in Woolwich.

The Black Cab was decent last season - not so good so far this year though

The Nitrosurge Guinness is actually pretty decent IMHO

ANother good pub that serves a decent Guinness is The Jolly Farmers in Lewisham near the hospital

He enjoyed it too much.  FYI, my report = as good as a pub guiness and you don’t have to put up with twats at the bar. 5 stars.

Does anyone else prefer bottled  guinness to the widgety stuff? I find nitrogen kills all the flavour, as it does with Boddingtons/Caffreys etc (not that I imagine these beers were ever much cop anyway)
