Membership of Junior Reds/Addicks

We started going regularly in 1986 and my brother was 13 at the start of the season. I'm guessing the oldest Junior Reds must be slightly older depending when it launched in 1985 and the cut off age for membership.shirty5 said:

I was talking to my brother about it yesterday, he recalled an away day at Sheffield Wednesday where the Junior Reds were well and truly annihilated by Wednesday's actual youth team.T_C_E said:

I’ve hit a brick wall trying to communicate with the club so as a long time listener but first time poster on here, I was hoping someone might be able to help!
I signed my lad up to the Junior Addicks back in October - does anyone know if you receive a welcome pack as we have in previous seasons? I’ve had nothing but did receive the email about the Christmas party so know I’ve signed him up correctly.
Also, we live up north so can’t get to many home games but do try and get to aways. Is there a process for being an away match mascot as when I’ve enquired, I’ve had conflicting answers of one being chosen from ticket sales and another telling me to approach the home team about it.
Thank you all2 -

best i can add is i think i got a charlton pencil case and a few stickers when i signed up in the mid 80@s1

Sadly, this is yet another example of the poor communication between fans & the club.
There's no way that anyone with an issue club related should have to make a fruitless search for information they need but it's been the case for some considerable time.
Plenty of volunteers /Advisory Board / employed "Fan Advisor " or whatever the title is currently but who deals with what ?
Rumours abound that behind the scenes, staffing levels have decreased, hence , presumably why it's almost impossible to find someone to answer your questions....Really not good enough.
But who will take this seriously & ensure there is a clear pathway for those with such issues ?
The CEO ?

I can’t remember my son getting anything other than a voucher for the club shop, a letter from Nathan Jones and a card.

I've emailed the club twice earlier this season asking about the possibility of getting some parking assistance for my 83 year old dad who now struggles walking up and down the hills - i even went into detail on the second one about all the things he has done for the club over the years (and that we're not looking for a freebie - never have). Even a response to say nothing doing would have been fine but just nothing - no response at all. Blanked.0

This is even worse than I thought !
Maybe CAST will offer some advice if the club doesn't care .3 -
Good idea - i'll have another go at it after xmas - not sure i'd be on cast's 'help him out' list though as i've made it clear that i'm not impressed with their efforts re holding us back v millwall. Maybe i won't introduce myself as DoucherFanny Fanackapan said:

Yeah, as WSS said, my kids got an envelope with a club shop voucher, letter from NJ and that's about it I think. There may have been a pack given out at the start of the season at one of the games but it was just a pack of haribos and another voucher I think. You haven't missed out much by not getting it.
The value is in the parties/meeting the players/end of season playing on the pitch and potential of being drawn as a mascot.
Both mine ended up mascots through JR and have played on the pitch which has made it incredible value.1 -

Regarding the pack. My boy received a membership card, and with it came some cheap Charlton stationery. Other benefits - like the chance to be a mascot, the chance to do some flag waving - that 'chance' is of no consequence to an 8-year-old when not selected. An invitation to attend events is also included - e.g. the Xmas party. The pack also has a voucher for £5 off in the club shop when spending £25 or more - again, not reading the room.. just make it a £5 voucher with no strings attached, my boy isn't walking around with £25 in his pocket.
Our pack arrived after I emailed the club to ask what was going on, as I was in the same situation you're now in @Yorkshire_Addick ... I wasn't really sure what I'd bought and nothing had turned up.
I think the people running it have the best of intentions. And to be honest I don't really mind a quaint membership, run on a best-endeavours basis. I quite like that. But the club have got very good at smelling a pound note and the cost is now £40 a year. The two don't go together. I suspect it's worth it if you live locally to max out on the events, or get lucky and are selected to do something on a matchday. Otherwise, it's a lot to pay for a membership card, pen and pencil (or whatever it was in the pack).
That said, no one has to join, and I'm not complaining. I signed up because there was the option to do so, and a gesture of goodwill on my part, in the club's direction.
My experience isn't a glowing reference. But I'm sure there will be many others who have had great value from it, like @Athletico Charlton.
The Xmas party, which I think was this afternoon, had every opportunity to be a memorable occasion for our young supporters, assuming a good number of players attended, which I think they would have done. Should have been a great event! I genuinely hope we hear good things about it, it might be something I make time for next year.2 -

No idea who the new SLO is but hopefully they should be reading those emails.
And replying to them.0 -
You’re a helpful bunch on here - I’ve had more interactions and useful comments in 12 hours on here than in 2 months trying to contact the club!! Thank you all
By the sounds of it, I can call off chasing the welcome pack. As someone commented, I found the value in the membership was the end of season session on the pitch which was an amazing experience!
I’ll carry on pursuing the away day matchday mascot - we’re off to Ewood Park first weekend in January so can’t imagine too many under 16s making the journey up the M6 so might have a chance (if someone checks the email inboxes at the club that is)!!!
Thanks again all2 -

Kid who sits behind us is a junior red and was mascot against West Brom and got to meet Sonny Carey after the game - he’s a great kid and attends all the junior red things - I think that’s where the value / benefit is1

My boys have been flag wavers, 2x Xmas parties and meeting all the players, played at The Valley and done the walk around the pitch all within 1.5 seasons of being Junior Addicks. They've loved it. When I mention this to mates who all support prem sides they can't believe it.1

If she is now in Comms it might be very easy to update the out of date information on the clubs own commsHenry Irving said:

According to the EFL websiteCharlton Athletic

The club seems to treat the SLO role & fan engagement as of no importance to the Charlton fans.
