Our best player since the start of the Duchatelet era?

As the January window beckons, I found myself thinking back on my years as a Charlton fan that began around the time Roland took over (Talk about perfect timing)

We’ve had plenty of ups and downs since then, but we’ve definitely had a few amazing players put on the shirt, my favorite of which was Johann Gudmundsson

An unknown player to most of us at the time of his signing, but proved to be a real hidden gem and went on to make 200 appearances for a prem team in Burnley. It’s signings like these that make me wish we’d dip our toe back into the transfer market in the rest of Europe

The question is, who was the best player to have played for us since the Roland era started over a decade ago?

Personally think your pick JBG is in with a shout for this because he was already near the top of his game when he played for us.

Other players who played for us in that time but who improved after leaving include Gomez, Lookman, Gallagher all arguably as good or better than JBG if you compare them all at their peak rather than during their time at Charlton.

Also World Cup finalist Diarra deserves a mention.

Immediate thought is JBG, Cullen, and Gallagher.

One of those questions that in 5 minutes, you'll think of someone else in the 'best' category.

JBG, Gomez, Lookman, Cullen, Gallagher, Polish Pete.
  • Lookman and Gomez given what they have gone on to achieve

JBG in terms of our best signing, if only he and hus scouting network had the vision to find more signings like that... Was probably one of the most frustrating aspects of his ownership, as incomings like JBG showed how it could have worked... But moments like that were too fleeting

    Look no further than Lookman.
Believe he made his debut at Brighton and scored that day. But the goal that stands out for me is the cup goal against Scunthorpe at home , cutting in from the right wing and hitting the back of the net from outside the box.

Diarra, Gudmonsson, Gallagher are the stand outs for me. No surprise all three have a lot of international caps between them.

Taylor, Cullen, Jones, Ben Haim, Lookman, Vetokele are among the best of the rest.
  • Lookman was my first and main thought before I opened the thread

Best penalty taker I have ever seen at Charlton bar none. Literally never thought he would miss. Mendonca is the only one who comes close

Christophe Lepoint was basically the Charlton Maradona.

Lookman is probably the best player that played for us at the time (but was raw when with us).

I would say the best player at the time of them playing for us was probably either JBG or Gallagher.

Random shout out for Ben Haim/Bikey partnership for like 10 games before they went off the boil.

Also Bulot when he hit that bit of form on the wing for a short time.

Wasn't gallagher 17 when he came? He was a league above then. Made it look easy.
    Agree with lookman as well

Agree....Frédéric Bulot was superb once he'd got up to speed. We blew away some very good Championship teams in that spell. Watt, Vetokele, Bulot and Gudmonsson doing a lot of the damage.

    Surprised no one's mentioned Aribo.

The Gallagher season, what a story of what ifs. If Chelsea hadn’t sent him to Swansea and the snake hadn’t fucked off, don’t think we would have been sweating relegation in the slightest

I’m pleased that he left Chelsea and has found success in Spain. They didn’t deserve him

Best player, playing for us, who is ours and not loan for me has now become Lloyd Jones.

    Before he got crocked Vetokele.

Agree with those mentioning Gudmundsson, Buyens and Gallagher. I’d add Teixera to that as well. Thought he was excellent.

    Jesurun Rak-Sakyi.

Not because he was the best, but feel he should be in the conversation. From what I get, from the Charlton X community, we would have him back in a heart beat over TC (don't want to open that can of worms again just saying as it is).

Good player but only really played for us in League One. Most of the others all looked very good in The Championship.
