A very good series of documentaries on BBC iPlayer featuring great Scottish players, ‘Icons of Football’, one of which is on John Robertson. What a fabulous player he was.

John Robertson needed Brian Clough as much as Brian Clough needed him - only Clough could get the tune out of Robertson that he did. And what a tune it was.

Wonderful winger in a stupendous side managed by a legend.

    RIP John
  • Sad news.

    Passed away aged 72.

Best winger I ever saw play.

Agreed Robbo. He never had any pace and smoked before and after the match (probably a quick drag at half time as well). But he could just buy half a yard by dropping his shoulder and whipping a cross in. Trevor Francis' European cup final goal is just pure Robertson.

nice little documentary re John on bbciplayer
he would have had a crossover with our own mercurial winger from Lanarkshire who would have been at Forest in the latter part of Johns career and you could definitely see some similarities in the two in the way they played as well as the way they boozed .
Loved Forest and the Jocks back then , great times

Later in his career he played in a very poor Derby team at The Valley in 83/84.

Derby got relegated that season and we beat them 1-0 home and away. He was only 30-31 then but had faded pretty badly from his illustrious best.
