POST-MATCH THREAD: Charlton Athletic v Sheffield United: Saturday 17th January 2026: KO 15:00
When we faced Sheffield United earlier in the season they were much weakened, having had to shed their manager and re-appoint Chris Wilder. Now, they’ve turned things around and are in a good run of form. Conversely, Charlton have had a tough time recently. New recruits have bolstered Nathan Jones’ squad, with Harry Clarke making the starting eleven and Lyndon Dykes appearing on the bench. Fan favourite Matty Godden returns from his stint in post-surgery rehab to take up a position on the bench with a view to a possible game-changing cameo. With Clarke coming in on the right, James Bree, possibly in his last appearance with his contract coming to an end, moving over to the left wing back position. Harvey Knibbs and Karoy Anderson come into the midfield for Coventry and Carey. Tyreece Campbell began the match on the bench.
The action came thick and fast but it was mostly one way traffic in favour of the visitors:
On 6 minutes Bamford goes down in the box under pressure from Anderson: no pen.
On 7 minutes, Thomas Kaminski pulls off a point blank save to force a corner.
On 14 minutes Kaminski was called into action again, this time facing up to a one-on-one in the box that he saved with his foot.
It was back to the wall defending with Sheffield United very much in the ascendancy. In fact, so much so that Kaminski had to go down with a medical emergency!
On 30 minutes the northerners came closest to taking the lead when a deflected effort through traffic in the box struck the post and the rebound fell kindly to Brooks but he was unable to hit the target.
But it was some five minutes later when the game changed. The ball was pinged back and forth in the air when Knibbs went in to challenge for a lose ball. The challenge on him was hard and high on the lower leg. Studs first. Knibbs’ reaction was immediate as he dropped down and grabbed his shin, screaming! The ref’s intervention was swift, and the player, Djibril Soumaré, was given a straight red card. Knibbs’ was carried off on a stretcher and was replaced by Sonny Carey.
At around 46 minutes, it was the unbelievable that happened. Sheffield United captain Japhet Tanganga flew recklessly into an aerial challenge leading with his elbow—like Randy Savage off the top rope—he went straight through the back of Sonny Carey and was rewarded with a straight red! Down to nine, the visitors had done their level best to give us a fighting chance.
Charlton were very poor in possession throughout the first half. Sheffield United were dominant but it was mistakes of their own making, which the referee got absolutely right on both occasions, that cost them that dominance. Miles Leaburn put in a battling effort and was our prime outlet. He fought well and managed to use his deceptive footwork to make space and conjure opportunities to put the visitors under pressure. And it was Thomas Kaminski that kept us in it with a mammoth performance.
Tyreece Campbell was brought on to start the second half, replacing James Bree. New man Lyndon Dykes was brought on for Charlie Kelman to lead the line, somewhat surprising, alongside fellow big man Miles Leaburn. Campbell’s impact was immediate. His cross into the box was cleared off of the line within mere seconds of kickoff. But it was Lyndon Dykes contribution, a glancing header some moments later, that made the impact that put Charlton into the lead. Dykes combined with Sonny Carey to put the Addicks up 1-0 only minutes into the second half.
Charlton did to Sheffield United in the second what they had done to us in the first half. But that was largely because they conceded two players. Nonetheless, Charlton were able to press on and probe enough to keep the visitors chasing shadows. By the end they were knackered and largely impotent, though their support never gave in. It was in the final minute of added time that the home crowd were given a lift through the introduction of talisman Matty Godden. He came on and looked sprightly, though before he had a chance to do anything but run about, the referee called time.
This is three points in the bag. It’s not everyday that your opposition will have two players sent off but we capitalised on their errors and did just enough. Dykes looked a handful in his role, more mobile than I thought he’d be and Clarke did well on the right. No doubt, we have to be better in possession to continue progressing at this level.
Hopefully, Harvey Knibbs is ok though it didn’t look good.
Charlton 1 Sheffield United 0
Over to you.

I'm going to make it my catch phrase but avoiding relegation will not be for the faint of heart. It won't be pretty and it won't be easy.
Today we're three points closer to safety. It wasn't pretty. It wasn't easy. But we won. Yes, we'll need to be better in the weeks to come but three points and a clean sheet are massive.37 -
3 points. We’re not dynamic enough to break down 2 banks of four. We did enough. Some people will never be happy25

We were diabolical today. No way we would have got a result if it stayed 11v11

Can a win ever be deflating? Yea it can!38

Disgraceful performance. Worse than Southampton game34

Good to see all the fans stay behind to loudly applaud their team after a courageous performance.
As for us, christ, I'll take it, but13 -
Three League games undefeated in 2026, we've deserved a win ever since the Portsmouth defeat and ironically it comes in the one match where we perhaps didn't deserve the three points given the first 30-mins... But that match was evidence of how a game is over 90mins, and also is why no match can be considered a "must win" yet because victories will always turn up in Football when you least expect them.Would have been nice to have scored more, but the three points is the only factor at the end of the dayThe players have basically just had 45mins where they've not been overly stretched, and haven't had to overly push themselves physically so should hopefully be a minor aid in the coming week against Derby and that lot up the road.Oh and Godden is back... Whats not to love?35

After a run of 1 win in 13. A win no matter how it came is the important takeaway from this. Clarke looked good as did Dykes with an excellent assist. Rested a few for a busy week with a game Tuesday and Saturday. A few points to get away from the scrap at the bottom of the table, building a platform. With a couple more signings we can hopefully kick on from here.
TK POTM, if one of those early ones goes in we lose that. Godden back. Ramsay got through the 90. Burke back on the bench.
The negatives – Anderson can’t play that defensive role in midfield. He isn’t good enough positionally. His running can be an asset but he needs to be in the 8 or 10 role for that to work. Knibbs injury is a shame as he was looking one of our better players before that. We saw why Bree on the left hasn’t been tried before.
Sheff United were an odd team. Wouldn’t call them dirty but they were looking to draw fouls and control the ref and hope he gave them everything. When he didn’t and they weren’t able to make the most of their pressure they lost their heads and flew into tackles that they shouldn’t have. They can have no argument over either of the red cards. Hope the guy who injured Knibbs gets a 10 game ban, that was horrendous.

On the second red card, watching the replays I'd say definite yellow, harsh red. It wasn't exactly a shearer elbow but he came in at velocity.3

3 points is 3 points. Not pretty but we need points on the board so I'm happy tonight.
Hope Knibbs is OK.

First time in my life a victory has felt someone deflating, happy with the win, but i do worry for our future, because we haven't got any creativity or attacking quality about us at all26

Clarke and Dykes look fine 👍Godden is back 👍Knibbs came out in crutches and a protective boot 👎3

3 points means 3 points closer to survival.
Less said about the performance the better. Not sure what the idea was with the starting line-up, whatever it was it clearly didn't work.7 -
Genuinely think when we went in at half time Jones would have told them get a goal, then play safe unless the opportunities are on. Getting a win was more important than a big scoreline.cafcsinger said:Disgraceful performance. Worse than Southampton game14 -

siblers said:Be interesting to see if the Battleship makes an appearanceThe answer is of course... Its being dragged along the Thames at the moment, but the discipline to get the Battleship back into action is really worth commending, the same couldn't be said for the opposition - But of course the Guns are firing from the Thames... and Sheffield United, you've not been sunk once... You've been sunk the twice... Fanks for the double!!

I don't care what anyone says. That was crap.
Rubbish team selection from Jones initially. Bree was like a fish out of water at left wing back.
Completely outplayed in the first half. Needed some good saves from Kaminski to keep the score level. Then a horrendous tackle and cowardly challenge by 2 of their players gave us a chance.
Thank heavens for the early goal in the second half. Then a succession of aimless crosses meant we hardly ever looked like scoring again even with Campbell looking good.
And what on earth was Jones doing taking Leaburn off in the final minute when United had a throw right opposite our penalty box? The final braindead decision of a game full of them.39 -
Chris Powell comes to mind. Sometimes you have to win ugly.13

Come on lifers, a little perspective please. We've been on a horrible run for a while and up against a side who for the last 2 months have been on a very good run. Yes we didnt batter them in the 2nd half as we might want us to but we did what we needed to. A win is a win. Points on the board. Away from the scrap at the bottom of the table. Platform from which to build and players coming back from injury/new signings looking promising.
Cheer up!!42 -

One of the worst performances in more than 60 years watching Charlton. Gifted the win. First half a complete shambles. I can take we have lesser players but the complete lack of any organisation is incredible. Everything we do is off the cuff. No plan at all. I support the team
and always will. Support does not equal winning. But no sense of approach is unacceptable.26
