How did the reserve midfield three play?
  • Great Result but truly awful performance. So many of our players not only slow on the ball but seem to have No Football Brains. Example of this was TC driving up the left in last minute when their goalkeeper was still in our half. All he had to do was smash it at the goal and that's 2-0. Like I said brain Dead. Impressed with Clarke and Dykes but if we want to stay up we need to improve very quickly.

Badly first half, JRC had a decent second half and Karoy did not have a good game at all

That was a dire, dire performance. I think once we scored - which we did with a lot of energy and pace - we then decided to manage the game, which meant killing forward momentum, slowing the pace down, and trying to restrict Sheffield United's time on the ball.

They couldn't do anything other that sit back when we had it, and we just passed it round the back. We seemed to have little to no interest in breaking them down; Harry Clarke was SCREAMING for the ball and Kayne shuttled inside the majority of the time, leaving him frustrated.

It was unacceptable risky to try and see the game out for 50 minutes, conserve legs, and avoid using all five subs imo, and it has paid off insofar as we got three points, and maybe we have saved Conor Coventry's legs or something... but that was completely unenjoyable.

Yes, they parked the bus. But what worries me is how unconfident and devoid of ideas we looked when trying to attack, when the opposition had two players less than us. Like we were scared to try anything apart from giving it to TC or passing it sideways or backwards. And zero movement a lot of the time. It was absolutely painful.

Three points but more questions than answers - depressing.

Kaminski kept us in it first half. Decent debut from Clarke. Jones solid as ever. Leaburn battled well and Dykes put himself about and got an assist with his first touch. Campbell bright when he came on. The rest of the team and our performance overall was dreadful but a massive 3 points.

I wonder if the 2nd red would have been a red if it had been anyone except the absolute cockwomble who'd been in the refs ear after the (totally deserved) first one...

Valuable three points but that was toilet from start to finish. Some of our players are brain dead. Anderson's passing is atrocious. Ramsay was awful. We needed to get the ball wide second half and stretch them, sometimes Clarke was in acres of space and screaming for the ball, did it come, no. God did we miss Coventry but at least he's fresh for Tuesday I suppose. Kaminski kept us in it first half. Need to improve massively or we are in trouble with other results today.

Positives were Dykes and Clarke and good to see Godden back too. Other than that it was toilet.

Welcome the 3 pts, but that was 💩.
Can't believe we didn’t keep someone on the halfway line in the second half.

That was an absolute turgid performance apart from & apart from a 10min spell in 1st half that was dogshite…yep happy for 3pts ion board, but my god…why did we now go for the throat more, get the 2nd we would been able to cruise rather than make it nervy against the 9 men,we still sat back too deep & why on their corners did we have no one on the halfway line or between their 2 sitting between 18 & centre circle…that should  have been a lot easier but we let them come at us,side too side, misplaced 2-3hrs passes, just waiting for us to make a mistake that would have cost us,I’d be proud of our team if we had played like that with 9 on the pitch…oh n why the fuck bring off Leeburn talller than most with the last corner in last 2nd of game…anyways yep we win,but Nathan & the team seriously need to look at themselves & sort it out, because we won’t keep
    getting away with that…rant over,
    ❤️
    & 🤍 army
Because are players are not capable of going for the throat, lucky if they can hand ofa nine man team.

Jones didnt even stay and clap the fans today. He is upset with the negativity, it looks like!
I read it more as he knows we didn’t play well so didn’t want over the top celebrations, maybe I’m wrong

I do understand the concern but we’re not a team who will come up against low blocks often, we aren’t built for that and it showed. But we won’t need to play games like that much more this season, if at all

The way I see it is we looked comfortable in the second half and it could be argued we were a bit too safe after we scored. But having said that, if they didn't even have a half chance, you have to look at it positively. I certainly do as it was an important 3 points and that is the be all and end all. What is another positive is we could have been behind by a couple before they imploded. I think they tried to bully us and it was working but when you do that you need to stay behind the red line and it cost them because a couple of their players weren't able to. The first was an assault and you have to wish Knibbs well. The second, I thought there wasn't intent but it was a clear red by the laws of the game and was stupid especially given where the game was after the first sending off.

I think the fans were a bit naive not understanding the importance of the points and Jones was right to be a bit upset with some of us. I mean we were passing the ball in the middle without being pressed with not long to go and getting abuse from our own FFS! I was a bit angry so I imagine Jones was livid.

3 points is 3 points brilliant but what a fucking disgrace of a performance. Jones needs to sort this shit out some absolute shocking decisions by him today. If they would have had 10 men not 9 they would have beat us.  Why the hell
did he not being apter on. Why the hell
did we still need to play 5 at the back. Weird little bloke he is.

The BBC must be misreporting the result - I'm sure they said we had won.

I do not believe N Jones instructed the team to see out the last 50mins of the game, I reckon that was all the players were capable of against a team of better quality players. Man of the match would be Bamford for example.

We were awful all the way through. We could have been at least 3 down were it not for Kaminski. Our 'midfield' is only there to act as an extra layer of defence and does not have a clue when going forward. Jones was good and Kaminski, TC when he came on and Dyke's headers. Miles had his moments. The rest were dreadful. At least the three points, although undeserved, kept us a little way off the relegation spots. But not for long with performances like this

That's an insult to any of Chrissie's teams (even those with Church and Reza).  Today was truly awful, one lucky break away from drawing 1-1 against 9 men.  No fluency, basic passing poor even when under no pressure.

Has to be better on Tuesday, or we'll be battered

Heres my top tactical tip.  Pass the ball to where the players are heading, not where they were ten seconds ago.
I look forward to what will surely be the lowest scoring stats for a win in CL history! (Kaminski excepted).
Who got MOTM by the way?

It is awards season in Hollywood to be fair
  • Three points, Coventry rested, Dykes an assist first game, Clarke debut, and Godden back.

Will take awful football if it means we stay up. One week closer to Josh Edwards, and the sooner the better.
Unless Coventry is carrying a knock, why on earth does he need to be rested?

He hasn't played for a week, he's 25 years of age and presumably is as fit as he will ever be in his life.

Surely he should have come on for Anderson some time in the second half. Anderson seems like a really nice lad but by God, he showed today with his constant passing it back that he is a very limited footballer at this level.

Come on lifers, a little perspective please. We've been on a horrible run for a while and up against a side who for the last 2 months have been on a very good run. Yes we didnt batter them in the 2nd half as we might want us to but we did what we needed to. A win is a win. Points on the board. Away from the scrap at the bottom of the table. Platform from which to build and players coming back from injury/new signings looking promising.

    Cheer up!!
Charlton fans: "We CANNOT go back down to League One... It would ruin us"
Also Charlton fans: "Oh we can't be winning games like that"
Do you think the performance was good?

No-one is unhappy with 3 points, but we need another 18-20 for safety. We’ll get nowhere near that number if the first half performance and marginally beating 9 men Sheffield United is the level we’re satisfied with.
  • Pleased with that. Sheff United were the most in form team in the league over the last ten games going into today. We were second bottom.

To make it harder for ourselves we had a strange team selection that clearly didn't work. Thank you Sheffield United for capitulating.

Shame Norwich won but we're in the lower mid-table pack now. 18 points from 60 needed to guarantee safety.

I just pray  we dont play like that at millwall next week
If we play 10 times better than that we’ll get humped by minimum 5
truly the most widely inept gutless pissing about I’ve seen in over 30 years
only Clarke Kaminski and Dykes were decent
Leaburn TC and Lloyd Jones were mostly adequate
several are ill equipped and a shameful few clearly couldn’t give a damn
Manager Jones seems to have lost any grasp  of how to play attacking football
WTAF was he doing with the Godden substitution at the death?
2 man advantage and we leave nobody up the field for Sheffield set plays
that is choosing to not do the job properly especially as TC and Carey are useless defensively they might as well be out of the way in our own box take 2 attackers out with them the defensive risk is nil and we might just keep the ball or have somewhere to kick it
relentlessly negative unimaginative and ultimately scared shitless to the point of total inertia
we are in deep deep shit
