truly the most widely inept gutless pissing about I’ve seen in over 30 years
only Clarke Kaminski and Dykes were decent
TC and Lloyd Jones were mostly adequate
several are ill equipped and a shameful few clearly couldn’t give a damn
Manager Jones seems to have lost any grasp  of how to play attacking football
WTAF was he doing with the Godden substitution at the death?
2 man advantage and we leave nobody up the field for Sheffield set plays
that is choosing to not do the job properly especially as TC and Carey are useless defensively they might as well be out of the way in our own box take 2 attackers out with them the defensive risk is nil and we might just keep the ball or have somewhere to kick it
relentlessly negative unimaginative and ultimately scared shitless to the point of total inertia

Come on lifers, a little perspective please. We've been on a horrible run for a while and up against a side who for the last 2 months have been on a very good run. Yes we didnt batter them in the 2nd half as we might want us to but we did what we needed to. A win is a win. Points on the board. Away from the scrap at the bottom of the table. Platform from which to build and players coming back from injury/new signings looking promising.

    Cheer up!!

Do you think the performance was good?

No-one is unhappy with 3 points, but we need another 18-20 for safety. We’ll get nowhere near that number if the first half performance and marginally beating 9 men Sheffield United is the level we’re satisfied with.
Or the second half performance as well.

The first 30mins wasn't great, but it was similar vs. Ipswich where we got dominated and weathered the storm
The fact that Sheffield United had two players sent off isn't our problem
We then didn't struggle in the second half as others would want to believe, given that we had 3-4 opporuntities to score, including a clearance off the line... We're just not going to be high scorers this season, that was pretty obvious even before this match. We basically played a team who parked the bus, a team who finished 3rd last season, and because of miss-management in the summer, are in a false league position... We've just done the double against that side... Yet for some its not good enough... Jesus!!
We've also played better than we have done today, most notably against Leicester and we've lost - So the outcome of both games, when you primarily take the performance into account is that it means absolutely f**k all... All that matters is to score more than the opposition... We've done that today... Tuesday we might be better, we might be even worse, who the f**k knows... Its the beauty of Football

    PWR

A defeat was staved off by two red cards for the Blades.
We should have capitalised on their being down to 9 men with more than one goal. As soon as it went in we then sat back and played defensively. No passion or desire whatsoever.
Glimpses of passion from Campbell and Leaburn. Our new No. 99 was decidedly not flaky, but not convinced by the new No. 44 - his passing was dire.
To be honest, I’ve never been pissed off after a win before. If we carry on playing like this we will rely on the bottom three relegatees really making a bigger pigs ear of it than we are.

Some excellent saves from Kaminski built a platform for three points.

Apter and TC would have offered width from both sides and made us slightly less predictable towards the end.

Great purple sky, the only other noteworthy observation.

I think  theres something wrong with his arms, or his brains muscle co-ordination to them.  Every time he falls on his arse they start waving around.

It seems everyone  on Charlton life assumes that the last performance is basically what it’s going to be like for the rest of the season.

If we win and play well we’re going up

if We lose and play poorly we’re going down and are dreadful.

Can you not just take this for what it was? A really poor performance.

The way some people are talking we never started the season well and we’re doomed.

we cant play much worse than that. I think we’ll get better with Cov back in the middle and Dykes to rotate with Leaburn. Plus when Edward’s is back we have options again.

    chin up

Calm a little bud. We won. We know it was crap but there are lots of games you play well and lose.

No one will over celebrate it and I’m sure Jones will be letting them know it wasn’t acceptable as a performance.

No point in getting angry with a win though. Life is faaarrrr too short.

  • Invaluable 3 points, but Kaminski MOM probably tells you most of what you need to know about the performance. Apart from his efforts and a nicely taken goal, I'm going to try to erase the rest of it from my memory.

Absolute garbage and were lucky to still be in it by the time of the reds but a win's a win. Jones does make some strange decisions though. Anderson as a holding midfielder, taking off Leaburn when we're defending a throw. Hard to understand the logic.

Worst performance of the season. Fantastically entertaining drama packed match, a win and a clean sheet. This is what it means to be Charlton?!

I know exactly what “Headphones” meant when he said that there would be laughs, tears and it’s all good fun.

Never has the phrase ‘a win’s a win’ been more apt. We were dreadful but 3pts closer to safety. Will need to play much better than that in the coming weeks. Clarke looked decent and Kaminski kept us in it.

The way I see it is we looked comfortable in the second half and it could be argued we were a bit too safe after we scored. But having said that, if they didn't even have a half chance, you have to look at it positively. I certainly do as it was an important 3 points and that is the be all and end all. What is another positive is we could have been behind by a couple before they imploded. I think they tried to bully us and it was working but when you do that you need to stay behind the red line and it cost them because a couple of their players weren't able to. The first was an assault and you have to wish Knibbs well. The second, I thought there wasn't intent but it was a clear red by the laws of the game and was stupid especially given where the game was after the first sending off.

I think the fans were a bit naive not understanding the importance of the points and Jones was right to be a bit upset with some of us. I mean we were passing the ball in the middle without being pressed with not long to go and getting abuse from our own FFS! I was a bit angry so I imagine Jones was livid.
Because at 1-0 you are never safe. We were giving away silly free kicks allowing them to launch it in the box and by leaving no one up it allowed them to get everyone forward. One misplaced clearance, one mistake and it's 1-1 and we've thrown it away. 2-0 it would have been game over and no nervy moments. Some will say they didn't have a single chance second half but as I say once the ball is in the box anything can happen. I don't think anyone was naive not to recognize the importance of a win but that can disappear in the blink of an eye. For what it's worth I think TC was right not to shoot when they keeper was still in our half. Miss and they have the ball and can launch one more attack on us but at other times second half we were way too passive.

  • We’ve gone from ‘I’ll take 21st any way possible’ at the start of the season to whining about winning very quickly, well done everyone. We’ve gained ground on Oxford, West Brom and Blackburn today while beating a team who I don’t think we expected to get 6 points off this season all without a functional LWB and missing some key players. I’ll definitely take it. It’s a good day
    It’s mad isn’t it.

Also people seem to have forgotten how well we played at the start of the season and assume we can never regain any of that form.

a football season is ups and downs. More downs than ups recently but we won’t play that poorly again this year I’ll bet
  • I really don’t understand why NJ doesn’t play Apter.  He was good when starting minus one defensive lapse that led to a goal.  He was decent playing out of position as a lwb last month.

Taking off Leaburn 2 minutes into injury time when United had a throw opposite our penalty area - to be taken by a player who had a good long throw - is truly one of the most braindead, ridiculous decisions I have ever seen in over 50 years of watching football.

Why take off one of our best headers of the ball for someone who is not the biggest?

Still I'm sure the 30 seconds Godden had on the pitch will have done him the power of good.

There's no sugar coating that we were poor from minute 1, but a win is a win. 18 more points from 20 games should be enough for us to stay up. More than achievable.

Look on the plus side, with 11 players Sheffield would have probably rolled us over.

A crucial 3 points nearer to safety.

I dont understand, and havent for 30 years of following charlton, how, when there fans were calling the ref a wanker when he was next to them, none of our players thought lets try and dribble past them in the box and let them make a challenge. Bamford would have been all over it.

The clearance off the line was because we were so bad at trying to score a goal, Sheffield decided to have a go themselves

Not sure I’ve seen a win that has made me more pessimistic for the rest of the season before!

Obviously pleased with three points, but goodness, we made very hard work of that.

We were excellent at the start of the season, then we had a few injuries too many and lost confidence and we are working to get that back. So three points against the form team in the league is a positive surely, especially as that was looking highly unlikely in the first half. Some are saying we should have gone more for 2-0 as if that was easy. Well look at them first half, they didn't get the goal their dominance suggested. You have to decide what is the lesser risk. When we got the goal, it was perfectly valid, if not sensible, to restrict them to no chances which we did. Unless somebody can point one out to me which I missed. Yes it wasn't great to watch, but this game was all about the three points which some seem to have forgotten. Wins will help us get back to where we were and it won't turn from bad to good instantly. Out bad form started when Hernandez had brain freeze when we would have got at least a point against Wrexham and were defending well. That was when it started slipping then it slipped further. We are clawing it back and we can get back to where we were but the fans need to play their part which they usually do.
