Tbh i think jones still dosent know his best team yet , but i look back at games earlier in the season ..leicester at home countless chances we had , sheff utd away many had us down to lose , same at portman rd won 3-0 should of beaten millwall but for ramsey . So how are we so bad lately0

Leaving aside the farcical lack of a left back for 4 months, the biggest issue for me is our turgid, and at times completely ineffective attacking play. Looking at the team and tactics out there, especially in the first half, what was the thinking and how did NJ think we were going to score a goal, other than from a set piece or giving it to TC and hoping he could do something?
Two big strikers together, so who is going to provide the crosses? On the right we had Ramsay at right wing back, who seemed to have a nosebleed once he crosses the half way line. Not once did he drive forward towards the byline to whip in a cross across the box. Instead he crossed from much deeper positions, a much easier ball to defend. On the left, TC is an inverted winger, so instead of getting to the byline to cross, he much prefers to cut inside, onto his stronger right foot.
If you are going to have 2 big lumps in the middle, you mainly need right footed crosses from the right, and left footed crosses from the left, delivered across the goal to give them something to attack.
On the left, at least TC tried to attack, and other players helped him by joining in and creating passing moves. On the right, Clarke came on and got forward well (when Ramsay gave him the ball) but so often was by himself, with no help at all. It's as if NJ has told the players not to attack down the right, and just rely on TC.
Do we practice attacking throw ins? When we have throws ins in decent attacking positions, so often we throw the ball backwards, that player is pressed so he passes back again, and from a decent position, it's back with Kaminski. You can't be offside from a throw in, yet we never have players ahead of the thrower to exploit this, and stretch the opposition defence.
It's hardly surprising our strikers score very few goals.27 -
Think Anderson was better than many are saying, and much better than on Saturday, playing further forward. This was always going to be a really tough season. We need to stick with them. There’s no alternative that’s anything other than destructive.Changing the manager at this point in the season would almost certainly be a disaster; short and long term.12

Our corners and free kicks were much better today...Saturday is a free hit...do something they aren't expecting us to do...play from the first minute Apter, Fullah and TC and just go at them at speed on the wings with Kelman and Dykes up front. We have nothing to lose. Attack is the best form of defence.5
-
We are not quick enough or athletic enough (minus Anderson) in CM to play 3-5-2. On top of that, none are good enough on the ball consistently to play forward. Its been an issue all season and even in L1 we hardly set the world alight in midfield.
The formation in the second half gave us an extra man in the middle and it really helped. Jones seriously has to consider starting with something other than 3-5-2, ESPECIALLY with the LWB crisis. To his credit, Jones in game tactical and formation changes are usually pretty good, but it shouldn't always come to that.

I thought he had a decent game, especially in the second half, putting himself about, set up the goal and lots of completed passes. Should not have been put in Coventry's role on Saturday, that was very clear.fenaddick said:For all the Anderson criticism (a lot of which is valid) he linked up well for TC and got the assist which he should get some praise for
Re passing backwards/sideways... the same could be said about at least four other players, it's what they're coached to do - folk only seem to dig him out for it.4 -
No. Just he hasn't got a f**king clue anymore. He has run out of ideas.BenHaimandBikey said:I'm assuming he played two up top tonight in an attempt to justify the Dykes signing?
What a mess of a performance.0 -

I've been told it doesn't work like that. We have to wait for the big boys to finish their signings before they let us have their dregs.BenHaimandBikey said:
Edwards hasn't played since the end of sept.golfaddick said:A question for those still wondering why I keep going on about bringing in a LWB as soon as the transfer window opened......
Do you think a player and/or his club is more likely agree to join us now than a month ago ?
And if we wait until the transfer deadline the availability pool is only going to get smaller.
But then again I'm the idiot around here.
We should have had an LB ready to come in Jan 1st.
Or was that last week's excuse.
Not sure what this week's one will be. Probably that we thought Edwards was now fit again so a stand-in LWB was not a priority. I hear that Jonss has now confirmed that Edwards is indeed out again. But I wont holding breath that we will have a new LWB in before Sat.1 -

Certainly doesn't work if you don't have the personnel for it. It worked at the start of the season (even if it wasn't scintillating football) because all the good players were fit. Trying to shoehorn your only outlet into a makeshift defender is a recipe for disaster. Not only do you stifle your attacking threat you leave yourself open to being exposed at the back. The result......you let in goals you weren't conceding 3 months ago & then dont have enough up front to win you a game once you go behind. Its happening week after week yet nothing changes.WillmoreTheRed said:Jones’s system doesn’t work. That is all.13 -

Someone print it out & stick it on the tactics board in the dressing room. Better still, tie NJ down & make him write it out 100 times like you had to do at school when you forgot your homework.
Football is such s simple game. Why make it so hard.1 -
We played rubbish for an hour, then had a decent 20 minute spell, then ran out of steam at the end. It looks to me that the habit of setting up defensively and trying to see out the first half before doing anything is turning into a major problem. I get the reasoning behind it, but I feel that it drip-feeds the idea to the players that we have to do that because they aren't good enough. This impacts their confidence which in turn affects their ability. The whole thing is becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.
For a short while in the second half we played some good football. We moved well, used our width, got forward really threatening them and pulling one back. Sadly it wasn't enough, but if we did that from the off we might just find that we put the opposition on the back foot rather than ourselves.
One final gripe, there just wasn't enough urgency at the end. With 20 seconds on the clock, Kaminski was dicking about rather than taking a quick goal kick. No-one up the field looked like they were keen to get into an attacking position. By the time we took the kick, there wasn't time to get it into their box before the referee called time. Maybe it would have made a difference, maybe it wouldn't. But, as sure as eggs are eggs, our dicking about ensured that we didn't have another attack. It's not as if they don't know how long is left, there's a bloody great timer on the big screen.5 -
not good - goodnight.0

Seen this coming for a long time unfortunately.
Too many League 1 players in key positions not replaced and not enough championship quality signed.
The writing has been on the wall for months, we were scraping results playing poor.
The stats don't lie. Worst team on the ball travelling, posession and passing. Now it's starting to catch up to us and we could be in the relegation zone in 2 weeks time.
If only we had beaten Norwich, Pompey, and Blackburn. We would be on 40 pts bang on mid table, and they'd all be on, 27, 25, and 26 respectively. Plenty of breathing room, and results like this wouldn't feel too terrible.
Let's just hope we turn up next time for the games against the teams around us, as that will truly decide our fate.15 -
We played much better than Saturday so that’s a big positive. That first goal was very much against the run of play. Our football is a bit chaotic especially in the final third. Between hit and hope and brief bursts of individual brilliance many of the players didnt seem to know what to do when going forward (I’m talking about those with the ball and those without in attack). This resulted in the person with the ball passing sideways or back. This in itself is the most frustrating thing about watching any team especially when they are behind. If Sonny Carey is our creative midfielder then there is little evidence of it as he tends to pass creativey rarely. I thought Karoy and Conor did do a lot of defensive midfield work and thought that both did a good job of defending but what Karoy does rarely is pass in any attacking and aggressive way. This is the real weakness in the team . We dont have anyone in midfield who is pinging the ball with intent and quality ( think of how many balls being passed last night went behind the the winger so they had to stop and start their run again. Think also of Derby and their passing in attack being so much better than ours.1
-
Something I just noticed - that win for Derby has put them joint top of the “away” league table.
They have 24 points from 14 away games. Coventry have 23, Boro 22 and Ipswich only 16.2 -
I feel that something has to give, whilst we still have a reasonable chance of staying up. That "something" is Nathan Jones. He has to break out of his negative bubble and start playing creative players such as Fullah, JRC and Apter and give them the freedom to play their natural games.
We finally saw the best of TC, but only because there was nothing to lose, he didn't give a f*CK and just went for it. If the game was still at 0-0, he'd have probably passed back to Kaminski, rather than going for goal !
But Jones has apparently surrounded himself with "yes men" so isn't getting the benefit of critical thinking, or constructive criticism, from outside of his own negative bubble, which then results in players playing to his negative instructions, and being frightened to express themselves on the ball.
Where the hell is Bell BTW? He told us that the injury wasn't as bad as first thought!
We can stay up, there were some good signs in the second half, but NJ needs to change his game plan, starting Saturday.
8 -
I really worry about NJ's tactics and team selection! With 2/3 of the window gone we are still relying on Macca at the back. Where has all the energy gone from the team? You cannot start playing at 60 minutes and the tactics deployed is down to NJ and the buck clearly stops with him!
His Luton recruitment is now costing us as been mentioned on here previously some of these players have so many injury issues!
If the owners want to stay in this division then they need to get their cheque book out or pay the expensive loans needed to fix the issues!
I would get Gough and Fullah back in the starting lineup and get Apter back on the bench to inject some pace!8 -
I've not understood since Oxford why Apter hasn't had a look in. He can beat a man which only TC can do in our squad.
As we're stuck to the same formation no matter what, I would like to see them both at wing back at some stage, it would at least offer a attacking threat on both sides of the pitch.
Last night was better than Saturday but totally reliant on TC creating something. Hope Jones injury wasn't too bad, can't imagine their 2nd walking through the middle of the defence would have happened if he was there7 -

The main problems as I see it. Now without bree we not only have no LWB and huge problems on the left in general we also have no rwb's in the squad either. Whoever plays lwb or rwb seem to be too far up when defending and too far back when attacking so there's gaping holes everwhere across the pitch, they neither support the defense and play 5 at the back nor do they support the midfield again leaving us short man for man and mean we are so easily overrun and simply passed throu.
Bringing fullar on so we had 4 in the middle second half suddenly we werent so overrun and could control some of the game.
We have to play 442 of 451 with a striker (kelman) dropping deeper to give an option.7 -
Better than Saturday but still a tough watch
Gotta pray Jones is fit for Saturday, Burke is a liability at RCB but was slightly better in the middle.
Gillesphy, thanks for the Wembley memory but please never again
Our slow and incessant crab like passing across the back / middle is so turgid to watch. Anderson isn’t up to it.
looked much better in the 2nd half. But the midfield is a real problem
I fear for us Saturday2 -
Great start to the season with our first 11 fully fit and raring to go, but injuries have revealed us for what we are - which essentially is a League One squad. TBF the players give their all, but it ain't enough. If we somehow stave off relegation the owners will have to step up - if they want to play with the big boys.2
-
Incredibly we’re still 5/1 to go down, so if you do think we’re doomed you can at least get some compensation. I’m a massive pessimist, so I got in at 16/1.6

So, cold light of day and reflection on last night's debacle. Firstly the negatives. I get that Derby have a very enviable away record but to put physicality against them with Dykes and Leaburn was never going to work as we were forced to hit long or not at all, they both stayed central and as we didnt get down either flank with only Tyreece showing signs that he could if failed miserably. In terms of our back line, Jones was struggling and was replaced and Ramsay was struggling to keep up at right wing back. Midfield, loads of endeavour but forced to pass backwards due to lack of movement up front, Anderson worked hard but fails to track runners. Second half, much needed changes but no real craft or idea how to break them down, people calling for Fuller to start, need to look at his involvement in the second goal. As for the forward line, we'll Dykes was bad in the first and he was anonymous in the second, easily marked, the only player with any threat is Tyreece Campbell.
Overall there were some bad performances and a lack of idea, Gillespheys lack of pace is causing our team selection to compensate for that and I have a theory, unproven, why Roussillon is not playing, he has no pace, so pairing him with Gillesphey is like playing two of the Sloths from Zoopoliss. We now know that we have lost Edwards for the season and Bell for probably six weeks and the management have known it longer than we have, in terms of replacements we not only need to replace Edwards but Gillesphey too, it wasnt Gillesphey fault last night but he should be on the bench. I think that if Charlton get the players needed, they will stay up, if they don’t, they will go down.4 -
Here's a radical thought.
If we are to persist in playing a system that requires wingbacks sign a couple who can perform the roll.
If we don't have decent wingbacks in place then for God's sake change the system.34 -
Awful first half again, I get the Jones attrition football and it doesnt bother me much given the squads limitations the trouble is, the keep it tight until 60 means you risk what happened last night, but come on, have a little bit of bollocks, we can get forward and look half decent as proven after we scored I'd expect a bit more when at home against the sides that could go either way.
JRC disappearing as quickly as he emerged is odd as well as limiting Kelman's game time after bagging a couple.
Positives - TC looked alright when acting as a winger, Clarke and Fullah.
Ramsay, two games with Clarke and he just doesnt seem to be anywhere near being on the same wavelength, so many times Clarke is pointing and calling for a ball to feet or behind and Rambo is just 5 yards pass to Cov or back to Jones, hopefully with time that can develop, just.. dont take too long.
Please, not Dykes and Leaburn together again. Please man, I'll.... I'll do anything.....ANYTHING3 -
Just so much squad wise that I can't make any kind of sense of... JRC was excellent over Christmas now can't get a start , his ability to drive forward and pick a pass is surely a massive asset to a side that is completely workmanlike in midfield otherwise. Fullah is suddenly back in NJs good books after disappearing from contention after Birmingham away , Apter has been completely mismanaged after starting the season excellently and even did a good job filling in at LWB Vs Oxford. The less said about the Dykes and Leaburn pairing the better. The only one I "get" is Olaofe not being on the bench with the return of Godden.
We aren't going to score more than 1 goal a game if we're going to take all the creativity out the side and rely on moments of magic from TC when he's not being doubled up on by most sides.
We could be quite good fun to watch if NJ took the brakes off and stopped playing sufferball trying to nick 1-0s.9 -

Anderson was fine. He's always available, always works hard. I wish he was a better passer, but for Jones midfield he's absolutely fine.
He's come through the youth, you'd think he'd have a bit more support.
This club isn't playing badly because Karoy Anderson is starting. But this place needs to have a scapegoat and TC scored a really good goal so it can't be him9
