Is the USA even a safe country to visit?
Honestly? I wouldn't want to come here if I didn't live here. ICE will absolutely be ramping up for the World Cup and we've seen what they do.
So sad to see what's happened to the USA. I'm sure it will put off many, especially if people have to reveal their social media profile.
They currently don't - social media details are optional and I've just renewed my ESTA leaving that section blank.
I am beginning to think twice though as to why we've put in for tickets and already booked flights etc...

The proposed ESTA changes are under consultation at the moment but that ends in a couple of weeks and I would be surprised if any significant alterations are made before they go into effect. So if you are planning on going, get the ESTA application in now!

Yes that's the reason I got it now rather than wait nearer the time (my previous one expired last September).
There has been push back though, primarily from the hospitality industry. A lot of people (UK and Europe in particular) go to the US for vacations and the fear was a significant drop in tourism if they made getting an ESTA harder. I can see the original proposal being toned down.

In a rational administration I would agree. Sadly, the current administration have never thought twice (or even once) about blowing up hospitality and tourism! I suspect the proposed changes will go into effect pretty much as they have been presented.

SD where do you live if you don't mind me asking? My friend lives in New Jersey by herself and she seems to be living a very comfortable life. We chat online regularly. She's been living there for quite some years.
Have you got her number mate?

I read that the US President - mustn’t mention his name - has blocked fans’ visa applications from 15 competing nations - including Brazil and Mexico!  Is there nothing that man’s not capable of.
Sorry this is how misinformation starts? I thought blocking fans' visa applications defied logic (especially the logic of making money which is the basic goal of the hosting countries) and it took me less than one minute to find out they are actually blocking immigrant visas and the suspension doesn't apply to non-immigrant, temporary tourists and business visas...

Yes, we really need to stop that West Ham mob going over there and ruining our WC

That isn't what the initial announcement said. You're responding to a comment made two weeks ago in the first few hours after the initial announcement, before any clarifications had been issued, at which point it had been said to be a pause on processing visas from these countries while they worked out what new restrictions to place in immigration visas. It isn't the fault of members of this forum if the US government is unclear in its announcements.

It remains the case that there are complete bans on people from 4 of the competing countries, and the bans on those countries very much do include fans (but not players or coaches).

On the plus side, my chances of winning the DV lottery have significantly increased

Fair enough. Just generally had the impression that most people on here would jump to the conclusion that the current US administration is a circus but... you'll notice that some of the people that work for Trump are actually extremely good at what they do, if you're willing to be a little open-minded and take a closer look* at what those people are trying to do or what the locals on the right side have been saying for years about their previous administrations, the illegal immigrants problem and the massive fraud schemes and criminal activities that come along with it which are absolutely horrible.

*It probably is not going to happen since I read your second paragraph and realised there's a fundamental difference in opinions on issues like this one - is national security or safety of the citizens less important than the football competition? Plus Nick1992 above just mentioned he'll get a bigger chance to win the DV lottery and isn't it a good thing for people in both the US and countries like the UK? Or you like to see people from countries posing much higher risks to the US have a bigger chance to enter the US than British people?

Anyway, sorry this has gone off-topic. I'll try to keep silent. :D

The problem is that with the current President, things change on a whim. Nobody can be certain of anything from one day to the next.

Apparently the new Pinkerton agency also known as "ICE" will be providing security for the USA winter Olympic team. Milan mayor says "This is a militia that kills... of course they're not welcome in Milan,"

Guess they will be providing various security operations when they welcome the world cup.
