POST-MATCH THREAD: Leicester City v Charlton Athletic: Saturday 31st January 2026: KO 12:30
Conor Coady came directly into the side against his former side to replace Conor Coventry, making his Addicks debut alongside Greg Docherty, who returns after a spell in the wilderness. Thankfully, Amari’i Bell is also back to anchor that left side, with Luke Chambers ahead of him. Harry Clarke started on the opposite side with Tyreece Campbell and Charlie Kelman on the bench and Lyndon Dykes and Miles Leaburn starting up front to complete a rather large and strong starting side compared to the Leicester lot. Rather bizarrely, the first five minutes consisted of Charlton players going down with knocks to the head after coming off worse in consecutive opening skirmishes. In fact, with technical issues affecting the referee’s equipment, the first ten minutes featured very little football. And in that time, Leicester did not look at all convincing.
A bit of back and forth saw the Addicks settle in. Leicester, capable of a mistake or three this season, then suffered a catastrophic error when Sonny Carey cleared the ball forward for Miles Leaburn to chase. He turned his man and struggled past him as he was held back and then brought down by the last man that resulted in a straight red. Some 16 minutes had past and Charlton were now left to break down a reduced Leicester for the remainder.
After 20 mins Charlton had put the ball in the back of the net from a decent corner that was hung right under the bar and nodded in by Harry Clarke. Unfortunately, the referee bailed Leicester out when he called a foul on the keeper. On replay, any obstruction was of Leicester’s own making and the Addicks were hard done by.
It was a first half of stoppages. But the Addicks found the breakthrough nonetheless when, on 35 minutes, Sonny Carey broke into the penalty area to get on the end of a low Harry Clarke cross with a touch on his right foot over the Leicester defender to execute a sublime finish just inside the post with his left foot.
Leicester benefitted from a period of possession that resulted in a few set pieces that put pressure on the visitors. 10 mins added time. 46 minutes, Luke Chambers popped up in the box on the left side and forced a good save from the Leicester keeper, after a low driven shot that could have been a dagger before half time. But the man’s time would come a few minutes later when Greg Docherty’s hard work resulted in Leaburn controlling possession on the edge of the box. He played the ball back to Chambers, whose quick footwork bought him enough space to whip a cross into the box that split the defenders and dropped onto Lyndon Dykes’ outstretched foot and into the back of the net to put the London side up two to the good. Another quality goal (in addition to the one that was ruled out; also a beauty!) eased the pressure on the beleaguered Addicks looking to put an end to the poor rut and turn the corner on a disappointing couple of months.
Miles Leaburn made way for talisman Matty Godden for the second half. Leaburn had worked particularly hard and had some come off the worse for wear in some battles and has seemingly picked up an injury. Leicester came out with their tales up and were able to sustain a ten or fifteen minute spell of pressure. They had Charlton on the back foot.
Then the unthinkable happened when, on 55 min, Amari’i Bell made the mistake of pulling down his opponent in the box. The resulting penalty threw a lifeline to the desperate home side but when Jordan Ayew sent Kaminski the wrong way his nonchalant strike hit the post. The tension among the home supporters was palpable.
A relieved Charlton, let off the hook. then clawed their way back into possession. On 58 mins, Godden put the ball in the back of the net but it was ruled offside. To see the game out, Nathan Jones chose to make attacking changes, with Sonny Carey, Conor Coady, and Luke Chambers making way for Jayden Fevrier, Conor Coventry, and Tyreece Campbell. These changes in personnel and in formation weren’t as effective as their counterparts in the first half, but Charlton had enough to soak up the pressure and see things out.
The second half was not as encouraging as the first but the match was managed well enough to see out the win and the clean sheet. Anything could have happened today, with Leicester being something of a basket case and Charlton in a poor run of form with little signs of anything changing in recent weeks. Today was just what we all needed. All of the January transplants did well today. I though Coady was a decent, calming presence in the middle, much like Amari’i Bell is on the left. Having Bell back gives us the platform to build on. Dykes and Leaburn, bolstered by a returning Matty Godden, were a handful for the home side to deal with. Returning Greg Docherty battled hard to ensure the win. Lastly, it was the travelling supporters that outdid themselves. They were immense!
Leicester 0 Charlton 2

Never doubted it as soon as I saw the lineup today.98

A massive win and a great response to last weekend. Well done Nathan Jones.27

Well, on Thursday when I posted Coady will play DM I was laughed at, who's laughing now...all jokes aside, a great debut from Coady.
Tactics spot on from Jones today and I suspect we will see this more going forward. 3 CB, both WBs pushing up high, Doc/ Coady on second balls on left and right, Carey running in behind with Dykes or Leaburn depending on who goes up for the header.
When you play 3-5-2 you really need both WBs who can cross or score. Chambers and Clarke give us that threat on both wings. Something we haven't had since Small left...
Leicester as expected started the second half fast. Rode our luck with the penalty miss, Fatawu is a superb player. Not many have done that to Bell this season. Nice switch to a back 4 mid way through the second half, enabled us to keep the ball well and kill the game.
Doc, Clarke, Chambers all very good. Hope Leaburn is okay, looked like he was in a sling.
Great result, great performance. Fans superb too!

What was everyone worried for? :-)
We have a big month coming in February and that was pretty much the perfect way to move into a busy set of fixtures.
Every January signing contributed something positive today.
Up the Addicks39 -
Infinitely better.Coady organises brilliantly and is tidy on the ball.Bell makes a massive difference.Godden is really good.Shame about Miles25

I’ll start with the positives as there are quite a few.
Chambers/Clarke/Leaburn all looked really lively first half. We looked a much worse team when Miles left the pitch.
3 points. Huge. Breaks the horrible streak and getting them away is fantastic. Albeit, I thought Leicester looked poor. Fatawu and Mavididi about the only two that looked able of hurting us.
Docherty showed what he brings. Watching him with the ball is painful, but without it he was once again effective.
Coady with a solid start even in the middle - but it’ll take more than one game to convince me that’s the answer to our problems there.
On the flip side, we had moments where we looked panicked, struggled against 10 to get out and really need some more actual quality in the middle. I keep coming back to it but a Josh Cullen type in there would make us so much more balanced.
The system worked today - I have doubts that against 11 men that defensive shape is the way to go.

A fantastic result that will probably keep us up.Well done lads.7

Big 3 points. Have to back it up on Friday now13

Perfect remedy after last week's disaster, looked a lot more like the side we saw at the start of the season to one we've seen over the last few months. Let's hope we can use this as a launchpad to really build some form and pull away from danger over the last few months. Thought we handled their dangermen in Fatawu, Mavididi & Monga superbly well, except the daft penalty from Bell where he was always gonna go down with any contact. Safe journey to those that travelled and COYR7

Huge win that, never easy to play against 10 men.8

Think I’ve cracked it.
Prediction thread & Beat the Bookie, had a Leicester win. Of course Charlton fucked it for me.
Same again next week.12 -
Shocking performance, you can see Jones has totally lost the dressing room ( source ITK's ) Thankfully players like Jones, Docherty, Ramsay, didn't let Jones get to them and they produced a goodbye performance to stuff it right up him.19

Thought Chambers had another good game. He was good going forward but, surprising to me, as good at the back, bar his part in Bell’s lapse in giving away the penalty. If those two regularly feature for the second half of the season we’re going to be alright.21

Massively needed win. Wing backs who can cross, who woulda thunk?
Massive month coming up so we needed a boost of confidence, lovely stuff!
Collins really would be a massive signing in case Lloyd ends up crocked10 -
Jones has had his fair share of criticism over the last few games and rightly so, but he got everything right today.
Went with a big and physical side, only Doc under 5ft11 in the starting XI, and we went long and direct to Dykes and Leaburn with Chambers and Clarke playing off of them to pick up the second balls.
Coady in the 6 worked (albeit maybe helped by the red card), the wingbacks got the 2 assists which is worth noting given the stick the formation has got, and all the January new boys made an impact.
Keep the faith and we’ll be ok.

Great result and good January signings.7

Only minor negatives to that are Leaburn in a sling, Ramsay limping and Jones looking like his ankle will fall off any second.
Coady was fantastic in midfield, so egg on my face there. His leadership was clear to see. Doc also had a great game bar a couple of on the ball errors. For the first time in months we actually bossed the midfield.
Clarke and Chambers were fantastic, looked solid enough at the back against two of the better wingers in the league and both put in excellent crosses. Chambers with a fantastic assist and Clarke had a perfectly good goal ruled out.
Miles was excellent in the air and to get their man sent off. Dykes was a handful, defended well and got out a telescopic leg to score.
How nice was it to have a back to his best Ramsay and Bell at the back? Penalty aside they were so calm and really helped us on the ball.
Godden lively and dangerous, he'll score soon. The other subs didn't have much impact but helped us see the game out professionally.
What a great result and performance23 -
3 points on the road. Lots and lots of positives to take from it. I’ve maintained that with some reinforcements we can go on a bit of a run and make things comfortable before we get too close to the end of the season. Signs all there today that we can do it.
Leaburn excellent, hold up play and seems to be regaining some pace. Having Dykes there to take some attention off him means he can drift a little more and drag defenders out of position. He gets better every game, hope his shoulder is okay.
Dykes well taken goal. Coady doing the Pratley role of being all over the ref from minute 1 and organised our entire midfield and defence. Doc looking back to his early season form. Such better balance with both wing backs being natural in that position, both putting in excellent crosses and getting an assist each. Clarke in particular loves an early cross. Fevrier looked big strong and quick off the bench. Bell back and looking class again. Some slick moves in the attacking third. Godden showing just how little he needs to get a shot off – such a difference to our other strikers.
Couple of caveats of all that, them down to 10 men gave us more space and meant Coady and Doc were given more space in the centre of the park, against 11 they might have been exposed for lack of pace. The missed pen could have changed the whole picture.

I was very happy with how we lined up today. A great win all in all not many of us expected. Fair play to Nathan Jones because we really got after them and with a bit of luck could have been 4-0 up at half time with the disallowed goal aswell. Perfect to start like this after many changes to our squad. Impressed by our wingbacks who I thought were great and happy for Greg Docherty who dominated in midfield. Will never be a playmaker but offers so much with his energy that we lacked the past month or so. Onwards and upwards.1

Good bounce back after last weeks disgrace.
Performance was good which regardless of 10 men or not is much improved over the previous weeks.
New signings looked good, happy to eat my words about Coady he was immense in the middle. Chambers and Clarke both excellent and Dykes is a real focal point.3 home games now pick up points in them and we are looking in a much better position.4 -
Massive win. Sets us up really nicely for the three home games.I said on Twitter that I didn’t mind the line up, was a bit concerned about Dykes and Leaburn front two but it was actually ok.We looked back to our defensive solidity. I dont think that’s a coincidence though, take out TC, Anderson and Gillesphy and the team looks way stronger as expected.Credit to Jones today, thought he got it spot on with the lineup and subs.I thought Coady looked decent at CDM passing wise - he does look a bit slow though. Can finally enjoy a weekend and week ahead.Three big home games coming up with a real opportunity to pull away from the drop zone.See you all on Friday!! COYA!!7

Can someone ask the ITK's if they have any more nailed on rumours and why if they know so much that they didn't predict Bell starting.8
-
Simply, we had a proper defence for the first time in months. Our problems have been very straightforward. Three good centre backs and two proper wingbacks fixed it. Now also clear that our midfield is a huge problem with none of them capable of making a decent forward pass, partly why we were on the back foot for a lot of the second half
Four more wins will keep us up3 -
Followed via match thread on here. Thanks for all updates on there.
What a brilliant win - sounds like we did very well in the first half so I have some belief again.
Very pleased. Let's hope we get more good news from the 3 o'clock games today 🙏1 -
I liked the line up, called the win pre-match. But that was dependent on us 'turning up', focusing, etc - which we did in absolute spades from start to finish. Took advantage of a team at a low ebb. Job done, very happy!4
-
A good 3 points. Hard to gauge obviously.
We just seem to struggle with time management on the ball. Leceister and others move the ball so quickly and we are so pedestrian at times.
Thought Coady provided what we hoped he would. Doch played like he had a point to prove. Miles caused them lots of problems. Though Clarke and Chambers were good and Dykes a wise head up top.
We have to hope this kick starts something.5 -
Forgot to mention Careys excellently taken goal, that was class. Also that we are back to winning second balls every time like we did at the start of the season.cantersaddick said:3 points on the road. Lots and lots of positives to take from it. Fantastic 3 points and well deserved
After the last month or so hopefully we can string a few results together now and get to safety as soon as possible. Keep Bell fit and we will be fine4 -
A welcome, and much needed, boost after last weekend and recent form.A fair few positives to begin to work with and decent performances from the new lads. One win ticked off the to do list.2
