Paul Smith, the ginger scouse bloke who theres a lot of clips online in the comedy club up there.

"What do you do mate? Bus driver? Haha, drive busses is it?  Drive it here tonight did yeh?   Hahahaha, buses this lad, what are yeh, 6?  That's f***ing sh*t that is, lad.

And you with him?  This yer girlfriend?  What do you do, love?  What's that?  Work in accounts?  Yeh boring cow, haha!  Write yer little numbers down do yer?  The numbers of his buses hahahahahahaha!  That's f***ing sh*t that is, love."

And you, row behind, what do you do?"
Couldn't agree more all he does is take the piss out the crowd, absolute mind numbing.
    Ah that famous scouse wit…
I saw Paul Smith live around about the time England were making a pigs arse of euro 2016 and he was in the category of "ok" the clips I've seen of him since is really shrewd on his part as his full tour is bang average. Comedians used to do the crowd work thing as long as i can remember. Mike Reid was a master of it

Frank Skinner doesn't dick about, he does a bit of it and is world class at dealing with hecklers but his set is always, crucially full of laughs. Paul Smiths wasn't, not any of his that I've seen anyway

I really don't understand how anyone finds Ricky Gervais remotely funny, he's a writer pretending to be a stand-up comic. Every single special of his is the same, the same boring premises that, despite being written with the sole purpose of being edgy, aren't edgy to anyone that isn't the same age as him.

He then always hides behind "You don't like it because you're offended". It's all so odd.
I suppose comedy is a personal thing, I find Gervais funny but, as I’m 59, that’s the reason. I’m not easily offended.
Don't think it's that. I'm 52, most of the comedians I like are much more offensive than Gervais (Jeselnik, Glaser, Sadowitz, Boyle (Frankie, not Susan 😏)). I think Gervais is a shit stand up.

I find very little funny these days... In fact only my box set of On the Buses raises a titter!
    "Titter".   Now that's funny.

Many years ago we walked out of a Ben Elton show.  Crude beyond belief and simply not funny in the slightest which is strange giving the excellent shows like Black Adder which he has helped write.

We have just discovered Have I Got News For You with Ian Hislop and Paul Merton which is so varied and funny with great guests - many of whom are not comedians - and we watch a clip most nights.
    Just discovered it !!??!!
    Now that is funny!

Went many years ago to a corporate awards night and the MC was Bob Monkhouse. Was hilarious without out being crude. And lighting quick.
    How is Bob's health now?
    He died Alan.

Most of these are very subjective and all comes down to opinions.

However, I’ve never met or heard someone say they think Rosie Jones is funny.

Anyone that will is either on her payroll or still waiting for her to spit out her punchline.
Trouble is, comedy is about timing.
I think it is about clear diction (whatever the accent).
OK you might have a very physical act, but essentially in stand up all you have is your voice.
So if you mumble or whatever and the listener is going ‘What? What did he/she say? What was that?’ Then you’ve had it as a performer.
Funny or not, if you listen to a stand up they all tend to have very clear speech.
The exception I can think of was the late genius Tommy Cooper who always sounded pretty drunk, but he was very very funny, and props and tricks supported his act.

Always preferred sitcoms to stand up when it comes to comedy.
Most stand up comedian's leave me bored after about 5 minutes

Comedy is similar to music in that taste is so personal. There are quite a few UK comics that are successful that I find completely unfunny - John Bishop, Jason Manford and Michael McIntyre to name but three. Of the UK comics that I like now - Peter Kay and Micky Flanagan probably top the list. Connolly was a God back in the day. Early Lee Evans as well but towards the end he became just an angry man.

But my favourite stand-ups of all time are mainly American, and we're supposed to have very different senses of humour. I love satire - Bill Cosby, Richard Prior, Robin Williams, and the GOAT for me - George Carlin.

I'm hoping he's nowhere near the new series of Mock The Week they've just started on TLC.

Have seen Sadowitz (and his cock!) a few times. Brilliant (his material...not his cock).

Doug Stanhope, Sadowitz and even, to a lesser degree, Jim Jefferies,  make Gervais' comedy look tame. Still like him a lot though although appreciate he's very marmite as a stand up.

Stanhope is an underappreciated genius. His bit on Nationalism is perfect.

There's definitely a lot of comedians who are brilliant on panel shows, but their stand up is awful.
  • I was at a small gig recently where Charlie Baker and Ivo Graham were performing. Both were very good, particularly Ivo Graham who was talking about his community work with Swindon Town FC and his deep love for the club. He went on to mention the supporters group is called the Spirit of 69 after their League Cup victory over Arsenal in that year. A member of the audience shouted that his dad actually played in the game - this sparked a genuine love in between them, made funnier by the admission from the audience member that his dad was actually an unused sub in the game - there followed an improvised section which was genuinely very funny.
The biggest surprise, however, was that another act on the bill was someone who I'd already decided, based on a little evidence and perhaps some preconceived ideas, had no chance of making me laugh. One Rosie Jones. I can genuinely say that she won me over. Maybe she is more personable in a small live gig but she performed a really good act that had several laugh out loud moments and contained content that was clever and really well sequenced. I did warm to her and I have swallowed some humble pie and would see her live again.

He used to do a good radio show, Parsons and Naylor, which I used to enjoy.

I used to enjoy listening to Jackie Mason too.

Honorable mention to one of the best circuit comedians around. Ian Stone, he can do the lot. Tight set, brilliant crowd stuff. He has had me roaring with laughter but I don't think I've ever seen him on TV.

Billy Connolly has made me cry with laughter and seeing him suffer is heartbreaking as much for his pragmatism about his condition as anything else

Geoff Norcott is a criminally underrated circuit comedian, a very relatable set and his impressions are class

Genuinely Kerri Godliman is someone you have to see if you get a chance

Elliot Steel is a weird one, he is as brave as they come. His dad is Mark Steel and king socialist, Elliot isn't afraid to take some hefty risks but I think he is more of a shock merchant than a proper funnyman.

Russel Kane is one who I had judged solely on what I'd seen on tv or social media but I've seen him live a few times and he is up there with the best live comedians I've ever seen

I see an absolutely obscene amount of live comedy through my work - and couldn't agree more about Rosie Jones. I wasn't expecting much at all based on...I don't know what - but genuinely really funny, and the loveliest person ever.

As others have said, comedy is like music and so personal and subjective.

Current favourites on the circuit include Matt Bragg, Lindsey Santoro, Jin Hao Li, Josh Pugh, Sean McLoughlin, Andrew Bird.
Special mention to fellow Addick Tom Toal who is a superb MC and runs his own night in Bexleyheath with great lineups.

All time: Billy Connelly, Bill Hicks, Louis CK (pre perv days) Malcolm Hardee, Stewart Lee.

I saw revolutionary socialist (his words, not mine) Mark Thomas on Friday at a local comedy club.
I went with my partner who wanted to see him, it wouldn't have been my choice, some funny lines but essentially it was a rant against middle class Bexley, anyone with a modicum of success and money, whether earnt or not, and a rather abusive rant about golfers and how they are stealing land. I was not surprised by any of his material as I knew what to expect but had a little chuckle as I saw him leaving the car park in a private plate Mercedes top of the range convertible, power to the people comrade.
