We need to at least try something different not saying I have a clue what but the same team selection and gameplan we get battered

Dreading this. Their attacking quality should be way too much. 3-0.

Anyone recommend a pub or car park for us?

We need a good performance as the bare minimum today. I'm expecting a defeat but goal difference could come into play towards the end of the season so we can't afford to let too many in. Also it's nice to have a game at 3 pm for once.

I would play very conservative with essentially 5 at the back
    Ramsey Jones Bell
       Coventry Coady

Then a couple of true wingers Chambers and Campbell

    Carey free range

    Kelman and Baines up top

    oh and maybe a Keeper.

On the train. My head says we'll lose this. Not a thumping, but a regulation home win.

My heart says that I've seen 2 away wins this season, Ipswich and Leicester,  two of the teams relegated from the PL. It would be a bizarre, but lovely hattrick if we could complete the set.

Agree with a lot of that as usual @Sage but to say Dykes isn’t a proper target man but would work better with more runners is ignoring the fact that a good target man needs runners. He is one of the best aerial strikers in the division, has a high touch rate and a decent creation rate, he can’t be expected to do it all himself

I did say he’s good in the air and has played well in games. I just don’t believe he’s actually a target man despite his stats showing he’s good in the air. For me, a target man is someone you can hit, the ball stick because he’s stronger and better than the defender, someone who can get others into play by holding it up, bringing it down and moving the team up the pitch. For me a target man is not someone who you can lump it to and flick it on. Which is what we do. That is the difference to what I’m saying, and why I said he needs movement and like you say runners. Because he wins his aerial battles and flick ons as we’ve seen with TC’s goal against Stoke and other chances created (Clarke’s in the first minute the other night). However, what I mean is that I think his game is more than that and because we lump it to him, I’m yet to see it which is why I’m not totally sold yet. He’s useful and with more movement and players closer to him (the gap between him and Leaburn at times against Portsmouth was absolutely huge), he’ll prove to be more useful. That’s the point I made.
I still think that’s ignoring the context of what’s around him. He gets the ball coming to him above head height so how’s he meant to bring it down and hold the defender off? Anyway I think we’re saying the same thing but with different outcomes, you saying he isn’t a target man and me saying he hasn’t had a chance to be one. Ultimately we’re both saying we need to get players closer to him to utilise him better

Saints have sold Adam Armstrong to Wolves. Although not a really prolific scorer, he did i m o make their forward line tick
So I'm hoping he'll be a big miss. Otherwise they are still a decent side with a strong defence
We need to wake up after Tuesday's sleep walking performance, though this is not a time to make wholesale changes again i m o
Radically ?, I'd have Fevrier and Dykes up front, Fevrier to provide width and hopefully a bit of guile, cos a t m whoever is selected as a 'striker' is striking dirt not gold
T b h I'll be surprised if we get anything from this, but one of the joys of supporting the Addicks is that over the years we have often had the priceless habit of, like a magician, pulling something unexpected from the proverbial hat
    Come on youse Reds !!
  • A defeat people will try and justify with “well at least West Brom lost” failing that it will be well at least Leicester got a 6 point deduction

  • No-one expected us to get anything at Ipswich don't forget...just saying...🤷‍♂️
  • If NJ persists with hoofball and bypassing the midfield it will inevitably be a defeat. The trouble is we don't have decent midfielders..
  • I think a recent form table is much more accurate than actual league positions in the Championship. Southampton sit top of the last six form table, we sit in 14th place. Southampton have a top three player budget, we have a bottom three. At the Valley they sliced through our midfield with quick, accurate passing, something our midfield struggles with. We should get thrashed, a point would be amazing, a win a miracle.

We were lucky that Ipswich didn't take their chances. It was a bizarre game....

I’m unusually pessimistic about this one. We will see a much improved performance but ultimately a defeat, 2-1 or 3-1.

Funny ain’t it, we lose we deserved it, we win we’re just lucky, agree it was a strange game…👌

We just don't know what Charlton will turn up. Not saying we are favourites but we have shown we can give teams a game. Unfortunately when we lose, we seem to lose badly.

Would sell a kidney for a draw today and go at West Brom for a win.

    Southampton 2- Charlton 1

Two dull as f##k 0-0 draws in the next 2 games would be perfect
  • Message to Mr Eckert (please forward)........
Dear Mr Eckert, please tell your boys to be gentle and kind to the opposition today, they are new to this league and can only just about kick a ball but not always in the right direction yet.
Please also ask your nice supporters to kindly not abuse our nice manager Mr Nathan (don't you know boyo) Jones, as he is very delicate and bites his fingernails when he gets stressed.
I would be very  appreciative if you could also keep the score down below the 5 you rather cruely beat us by at the Valley.
    Yours sincerely
    CAST

I thought they sold Armstrong in the Jan window? however Scienza, if fit, is above this level. Mayn't be as bad as some expect, as I posted before their keeper doesn't impress, and someone else said the back line are lumps. Just need to get into their half of the pitch.............

personally think trying to keep the ball as far away as possible from 15M Azaz and 15M downes is a good idea

Why is it harsh? Carey on his day can score goals. Docherty, Coventry, Rankin-Costello, Anderson are water carriers with no goal threat. There is also more movement in a corpse than Coady. The midfield is the area where we need the most change. We need some players who can carry the ball forward and who can pass it well.

Have you not been watching us? We can't really pass and don't have any players who can run with the ball. NJ doesn't like flair players and we seemed destined to capitulate if we concede.

We're trying to grind out 1-0 wins with limited possession.

Absolutely have to take our chances when (if) they come in this one. The last 3 we have had early pressure and chances but not capitalised on it only to let them back into the game. QPR and Stoke we got away with it to various extents. Pompey we didn't. We won't get many chances away at Southampton. But we have to take them.

I think TC has to start. We will be sitting deep and looking to keep then out for most of the game. We need some pace on the pitch to at least give them something to worry about on the counter attack. Will make them keep a defender or two slightly deeper which will slightly remove some pressure on us. Dykes can be the physical striker. Leaburn off the bench.

100 percent. I get the support for Jones. But he has drained our squad of any flair. He doesn’t seem to trust those players. If we go 1-0 down in a game it is very unlikely we will come back from that.

Stoke v Leicester 1-0       WBA v Coventry 0-1    after 20 mins.  Coventry now 2 up, WBA had no shots at all, nearly HT.

Dilemma … Think we’ll lose. Going for 3-0. Question is, do I watch or not?

Carey and Coventry are fine generally, just need someone that has the energy and work rate of Doc but can use the ball too. Would change everything.
