Wrexham poor, but our play in the final 3rd was even worse!

Lads played well, and the ground packed - but need to start grinding out results if we are to: a) stay up, and b) avoid future relegation scraps

The old adage of ‘trying to walk it in’ was in full forces, and just needed for someone to get their foot behind it and larrup it…
could/should have been 2-0 in the first half, before their soft shot bounced past Manion.

For all the crosses and lumping the ball forward, we just didn’t have people busting a gut to get on the end of it- disappointing as nothing fell out we either.

ref and Lino just another to add to the list of wank officials.
  • Can’t fault the effort but, as ever, need more quality going forward.

    How was Mannion?

Decent game, no chance with the goal and little else to do.
... and he comes for crosses!
He came out and claimed one in the second half, and got a massive slap on the back and a thumbs up from loyd and a few others. Lovely to see.

Can anyone tell me, did we play different tactics/formation today to explain the vast improvement, noticed more passing and wing backs getting forward more, thanks in advance.
  • I thought we played well in parts, just really annoying when we don't / can't take our chances.

I said before that a loss wouldn't be the end of the world, especially given that the other results went out way. We were always going to scrap our way to survival this season. Still on track...

It’s agonising watching us. Hear me out…that’s genuinely not meant as a critcism. Effort and desire is outstanding, we just find it so hard to create chances most of the time and even when we do manage to create glorious ones like today we couldn’t finish them. The 7 point gap is a brilliant achievement for this stage of the season, but (scarred by our last season at this level) still feels way too close for comfort when we haven’t capitalised on the results around us numerous times. We are all willing this towards survival, I just hope we will have enough because I can see a swing in points coming at some stage. We couldn’t have done much more today, really unlucky and frustrating
  • If we play as well against Brum next week I reckon we'll get a result.
  • We’ve mugged off a few teams this season. Our turn to be on the wrong end of it today. Just not our day but a good performance against a strangely poor Wrexham team.

12 shots and only one on target is a tiny bit misleading when the other 11 shots were split between six off target and five blocked shots.

Wrexham were poor but the one thing I can give their team credit for is digging in and putting their bodies in the way of the ball when it mattered.

Set up was broadly similar but not having two big lumps up front really helped us actually pass the ball more

Frustrating we played so well today but are so poor against WBA and Portsmouth. Stoke aside, the Cycle of losing and drawing is frustrating too. Be nice to see us start winning a couple of games
  • We’re Jeckyll and Hyde. Decent like today or god damn awful. Regardless of performance we simply must muster at least two more wins and avoid defeat in other games and it’s hard for me to see if we’re good enough to do that. This run in is going to be a close run thing. I wish we had a goal scorer.

Played well, unlucky to get nothing out the game. Hopefully Sichenje’s hamstring is ok

Was at the game and fuck me we are toothless up front.
Only positive i can take from today is that all the teams below us lost.
On to next Saturday and hopefully get something against the Zulu army wankers
  • It's all very well saying if we play like that then we will be fine. The trouble is we are so inconsistent that another performance like that may not happen for a while, if at all. We need to make decent performances count when they come along. Sadly today we didn't.
Feeling thoroughly depressed tonight as we had a great chance yet again to pull away from the bottom pack. We are still right in the relegation mix and we need to get one or two wins soon to ease the pressure. As we have seen too many times this season we bottle our must win games. Oxford away now becomes a huge game but this being Charlton, I can't see us getting a result there.

At the station and the Wrexham fans might just be the most insufferable wankers going. Half of them couldn't find the racecourse ground on a map 5 years ago.

A game we should never have lost but thats what happens when you miss gilt edged chances. Sichenje impressed again. Just hoping his hamstring isnt too bad.

Please bin Burke for the rest of the season
  • Baffled by people's suggestions that Mannion could have saved that to be frank - even more baffled by suggestions Kaminski (remember the last minute goal at Pompey away) would have got a hand to it.

So frustrating. Played well overall but the lack of attacking quality is always likely to kill us in the kind of game. Not just the finishing though, it’s also the players looking absolutely terrified of playing a slightly riskier pass so end up leaving it too late, then play the pass to that same player when they’re surrounded by defenders and we lose it. Glad to see us put in a good performance though as the Portsmouth and West Brom games had me questioning again where we were going to scrape enough points from.

Heartened by the performance. One thing you can’t accuse us of is a lack of heart, which can’t be said about the likes of Leicester and WBA - I’d be worried if I was one of them.

Wrexham were exactly what we aspire to be, albeit much further along in their development due to unlimited funds.

Don’t understand the hate for Berry, yes we need better but thought he looked tidy. Made a lot of intelligent runs and you can see his quality in the way he turns and sells defenders. On another day he has two goals if it wasn’t for a last ditch block or Sonny Carey being incapable of passing in the box.

If we stay up and are able to upgrade in key areas, I fancy us to surprise a lot of teams next season.

Really don’t like Wrexham. Their (new) fans have got a nerve winding up Charlton fans in Floyd Rd after the match. Hope they miss promotion.
Much improved performance, particularly after Collins came on. I was expecting him to be a bit raw, but he looked ver composed today, and refused to lump the ball up the pitch. That seemed to rub off on the rest of the team (no KW giffs pls 😬) and we played more of a passing game than we have for weeks.
Gutted we didn’t get something from the game. Collins fluffed his opportunity for hero status when he skied his chance from ten yards. Carey’s effort from the same distance was battered out by the keeper, when he should really have scored.
Miles came close as well, and we put some great balls in to their box that sadly went to waste.
Carey looked good driving forward. Would like to see more of that from him. Campbell again showed that he’s better out wide.
Had Clarke not missed the easiest chance of the match we might have gone on to win that.
Remind me of the comparative values of the two squads? It didn’t show on the pitch for much of the match.

Have you flagged it up with the mods?
You’ll find a few aimed at Golfie on the last couple of pages of the match thread. I’m all for passionately disagreeing with people but there’s no need for that.

Fair play to Jones the manager for setting us up with a view to getting forwards. Desperately unlucky today but i fear the injuries to Burke and Sichenje will hanper our options for the next few games oarticularly if chambers cant start

Best we have played for ages. Largely kept the ball on the ground until the final gung-ho minutes. Another ten minutes and we would have won.  Wrexham were shattered.

Play that well every match and we will be safe.

One of the only times this season I’ve walked away from a loss feeling alright. Leicester was probably the other.

Lots of positives, other than the fact we couldn’t put the ball in the net. 12 shots, 1 on target sadly tells the story.

Thought Carey played well second half. Kept the ball moving and with lots of intent.

Campbell with lots of nice play, but ultimately no end product again.

Clarke is quality, but need to practice his finishing. Two very big misses so far.

That Jones/Sichenje/Bell back 3 looked really good. Especially pleased with Sichenje who just gets better and better.

Really confused at how Wrexham are up there. Defensively they were a mess and didn’t have much going forward at all. Surely they can’t be going up playing like that.

I can’t count the amount of incredible saves Okonkwo has made against us. Hugely frustrating considering some of the howlers he’s made for Wrexham.

Play like that we will be fine. That’s the standard we need to aim for over these next 12 months.

Yeah see I am sat on the train thinking how have we not won that. Wrexham in fairness battled to the end. Anyone that had a shot this afternoon from us needed and extra touch and then were tackled or smashed their shots high wide or weak at the keeper.
  • Sichenje impressed again. As I said in the week, a lot of discussion of him being raw missed the mark a bit - great positionally, athletically fantastic in both strength and pace, and unlike most we've had over the last few years wants to play the ball forward and on the floor whenever possible. Some great crosses in also.

Carey had a better game than many of his previous, dropping to play the ball forward at the end. A few times there we needed a striker to gamble on a ball in, but promising nonetheless.

Overall, a shame to lose that but a sign we can play like that - we just need to see it more. On a negative, if there were any doubts, Berry definitely isn't the answer to our problems.

We’re too slow at everything we do, ends up compressing the field in front of us and no one running, so the ball goes backwards.
