Well in typical Boro fashion they have well and truly bottled it tonight, a poor Charlton side who have only managed one clean sheet this season which was at home to Birmingham last game.

People LOLed me when I posted on the pre-match thread that NJ was giving himself a problem resting players as what would he do when we won.

    They're not laughing now.

NJ took a calculated risk and it came off.

That the goal was Clarke to Coady just illustrated how good the January window was, much better that the patchy summer spending but we live and learn. Experience at this level is vital.

Are we safe?  Not quite yet but do we have the right attitude, the right players and right manager to get it done? Absolutely.

    No.
  • Thought they were reasonably well measured for a forum.

Liked this after someone mentioned a record 48 crosses put in.

Don’t think so, but I’m tempted. Can’t be arsed to set up a profile though haha

Manion makes his catches look so easy, are they the same shots Kaminski would parry back out?
They’re the same ones Kaminski would flap at and end up in the back of the net.

I wonder if it's possible to praise a player without bashing another who didn't play and has been part of a Charlton team who this season have been resolute and kept alot of clean sheets, something we probably didn't expect as much.
  • What a superb set piece. Like a whistle it cleared 5 defenders, one of whom was dragged away from the goalmouth by Dykes' movement towards the thrower.

Most surprising was Coady's post-match comment that he didn't know Clarke possessed such a long throw, until that moment!

Chambers was lucky to stay on, that was over the top, into the shin.
  • When you get statistics like that it’s akin to an experienced adult teaching a green young kid who thinks he knows it all to box, letting them keep punching away and brushing away each jab, cross, uppercut and hook and inviting the next one. It also had Coady slipping in a cheeky slap when they weren’t paying attention and saying keep your guard up.

I think he got this from one of the Sky commentators.

Coady said to Carey  "why are you not taking the long throw" as they were both in the box and the reply that "Harry can sling it in" surprised not only the Boro defence and Charlton fans watching but Conor as well !

It's good we now have two different throw in technicians in the team one who can loop it in for a flick on or goal mouth scramble and the other who throws it in like a missile and just it needs a touch : )

On Boro, I think they’re a really good team who like Millwall and Coventry have been excellent this season.  I watched their game against Cov a few weeks ago, and thought they were unlucky not to nick a point as they were in the ascendancy when they got it back to 2-1 and looked sharp, only to be undone by some poor defending on their part.

Like most teams that have lost to us, particularly in the second half of the season, they haven’t been able to break us down and that happens.  We are so very effective at sitting in and frustrating teams, particularly teams that we know have more attacking talent than us.  It’s not easy to break down and the only teams to have done it properly this season were Soton, which was a bit of an anomaly given the implosion and starting wing backs that day (Hernandez and Apter), and Chelsea, and Chelsea showed the sort of quality you have to possess to break us down effectively.  They probably had the same if not more possession than Boro last night, but the difference is they have £50m players to put us to the sword.  As good as the likes of Boro and others at the top end of the championship are, they don’t possess that, so when we’re at the top of Jonesball like we were last night, there’s every chance we can get the sort of result we pulled off last night.

Okay, Coventry and Stoke away we conceded 3, but Coventry was when Bell went off and Stoke was slap bang in that terrible run of results when confidence was knocked.  Millwall was shocking, but we conceded twice in  90+ mins.

Outside of those games, what, 3 maybe 4 poor performances in the league when we’ve crumbled defensively, we’ve racked up 13 clean sheets and picked up points at Hull, Brum and always been the game from a scoreline perspective at the likes of Wrexham, Preston etc

I can completely get a Boro fan’s frustration given their position and return at home to us, Leicester and Oxford, but regardless of their billion touches in our box, you have to say, hats off to us, we came with a game plan, we don’t have anywhere near as much quality on the ball as they do; so what are we going to do, try and go toe to toe in possession.   No way.  We’e going to do what we do best, of course we are.

I think more of the same is called for on Saturday.  Were Oxford not in such good form, I’d be advocating a bit more aggression on the ball, but given their recent run of results and the fact their fans will be buzzing again, we need to go in and play peak Jones football and do exactly what we did last night.  Sit in and frustrate
  • Nine pages in and I’m surprised no one has mentioned just how good it was to have a competent ref tonight. Take a bow that man.
On their forum they were moaning about a blatant penalty and Chambers should have been sent off. Any realism in this.
The penalty, no way. Chambers, if they’d been VAR he’d have seen red (in my opinion).
He got a bit of the ball but the follow through was nasty. Reckon VAR would have stayed with the yellow!

Clarkes throw was much better than Carey, more arrow like than 'looped' - would rather see Carey lurking around the edge of the box for the loose balls
  • Points gained, last 2 games

    6 Charlton
    6 Oxford
    4 Leicester
    2 West Brom
    1 Portsmouth
    1 Blackburn
    1 Stoke
    0 QPR

TBF that throw is a proper weapon that should be used more often. It also allows Carey to be at the edge of the box for a shot from a knock down. More please Clarkey?

Defensive masterclass Clarke, Gough and Coady deserve special mentions, Mannion was confident and played well also. Sometimes in football you need luck which we had as I thought Chambers should have been sent off and Boro just fluffed everything in the final third. Great reward for the traveling supporters.

Woke up dazed and confused this morning in a hotel room overlooking The Riverside Stadium. What the hell happened last night? Surely the best Charlton match since Wembley.

I've been quite critical of Jones' style of play and would like to see a more entertaining and attacking game from us. But I have to say, when we defend like that it is a thing of real beauty. Every player in that team worked their socks off last night for that win. There's no doubt that Middlesbrough are the better footballing side, but we just wanted it more and everyone stuck to the plan, never wavering. Magnificent!

I was shocked at the level of pessimism amongst the Boro fans after the match last night. One defeat and they are convinced their season is over. Come on Smoggies, that's not the spirit is it? We need you to win every game now to keep the spanners out.

Finally on the question of safety. Not once this season have I heard QPR mentioned as relegation contenders. We are above them now. It's too early to say we're definitely safe, but that to me is a very good sign.

I hadn't realised watching it live what a brilliant targeted throw that was, we really, really need to keep Clarke.
In fact I think I need to amend his players mark.

Some of those stats are crazy. Football is bonkers at times. Unbelievable result that.

On train to work with a smile still on my face. Brilliant

It worked against Brum with the flick on from Dykes after the long throw from Carey but that is valid to think that Sonny should be in or around the box with him being a goal scoring midfielder with 8 goals.
Overall our corners have improved with Carey with his Right foot inswingers and Chambers with his left foot inswingers.
Chambers took a really good corner against Birmingham which Coventry couldn't convert when unmarked on the left of the six yard box.
