Unfortunately the Durham tail did wag but eventually Stewart took the final wicket for 335 all out

All out 335. Who would like to play the ‘in what over  will Zak Crawley be out’ ? Would be nice if he makes it to close but can’t see it with the way people have nicked off today

I do not understand what Crawley is doing. I suspect that he doesn't either. He's taken to cover all three stumps with his pads, presumably because he wants to leave anything outside his eyeline. Trouble is you just know that at some point he is going to miss one and be plumb. He wasn't even trying to play that delivery too square, which is normally his issue, but the fact he missed it one that came back, probably makes things even worse.

Muyeye edges a ball from Potts and McKinney drops a sitter at slip. He needs to make them pay for that.

  • A pretty tough day after winning the toss.

I would not be surprised if Zak Crawley is unsure what to do as there appears to be a lot of (non-Kent) cricket fans almost wishing him to fail to prove to themselves he shouldn’t have been selected for the Ashes in the first place. He is a young bloke trying his best in a difficult sport and some of the comments I have read, on the BBC in particular, don’t reflect well on the cricket community

I agree about the comments but one suspects that many of those are driven by the perception that he has been given special treatment given his father being best friends with Key.

The issue, from a professional perspective, is that he has the same technical flaws, he has always had and does not want/seem capable of eradicating those. It becomes a question of how long he will survive and how many runs he can score before he is dismissed.

A lot of batters cover all three stumps because they don't want to be playing at good length balls outside their eyeline. The problem for him is that his head ends up outside off stump to straight balls so his eyes aren't in line with the ball when he plays it. Three times out LBW in his four innings this season isn't a coincidence. The stats don't lie either and  the ability to play a glorious cover drive should not usurp those.

Last two seasons in the CC:

541 runs in 18 innings at an average of 31.82. This includes one innings of 238 against Somerset, on what was a road, in May 2024 in a drawn game (Somerset 554, Kent 178 & 409-5). So he has averaged just 18.94 in his other 17 innings.

Last two years in Test cricket:

975 runs in 35 innings at an average of 27.86

Anyone other than someone who is centrally contracted would be under severe pressure for their place in the current Kent side especially with a youngster such as Dawkins (who is almost a decade younger than Crawley) waiting in the wings. If things don't improve then at least being in the England set up will afford him the opportunity/excuse to go away and really nail his technique. Once and for all.

Muyeye given out LBW for 10 (41). Really has to be a question mark about whether he was hit outside the line. Swiftly followed by DBD for a duck, playing a very ordinary dab into the hands of slips.

    65-4

Evison caught behind by Robinson off the bowling of Potts for 2 (4).

A humbling scorecard. I've not been watching, so is our batting bad, or was our bowling yesterday not good enough?

I can't seem to get a live video for today but our bowling, at times, was the wrong length on this pitch and our batting has been exposed for the technical issues the likes of Crawley, Muyeye and DBD have had for years. The fact that the only one that has stood firm is Northeast isn't a coincidence.

Thankfully Northeast came back to the Southeast from the southwest as Kent have lost their direction.
