Matt Godden - p33 - NEW ONE YEAR CONTRACT

A gentleman’s agreement? He’s under contract until 30th June. After that he can do as he pleases.Diebythesword said:I’m fairly convinced we have a gentleman’s agreement with dykes that he’s free to look elsewhere after the World Cup this summer. With Godden looking like he might finally be back, the money spent on Kelman and mbick and Kanu back it probably makes sense. Although would like another striker through the door if we get rid of tanto which is probable.3 -
Thats the cost of club ownership I'm afraid.SteveACS said:
Perhaps you could offer the owners the £20 million plus, you have stowed down the back of the sofa?golfaddick said:
Could probably get rid of a couple from that list.MarcusH26 said:
Think Kanu is an interesting one. Will be interesting to see how he looks in preseason and if he's someone we look to challenge with a League 1 loan (Bromley or AFCW) or if he stays around and tries to compete to start for us.SteveACS said:
If we sign Dykes, we'll have plenty of strikers in the building.elbiglad said:Such a great player to have in the squad, he just makes things happen and that's not luck: he is so proactive, does not stop moving and is a nightmare for defenders.
It's a tricky decision re contract extension. I would keep him around as he seems like a great locker room presence, I love having his experience for the younger players (TC called Godden his 'goat' on instagram yesterday!) and clearly he still has loads to offer on the pitch.
However, if he's on big money (let's say he's in the top 9 of the new 9+9+9 model), then I don't think he justifies that. I don't know what his wages are, but for me it comes down to how else we can spend that. I think most fans would love to see him here next year, but those in control of the purse strings will be looking at it without sentiment.
Don't forget, Kanu and M'Bick will be back, after very successful loan spells.
Seems a no-brainer to keep him around, rather than spend money on getting another striker, when there are more important positions to spend on...
Dykes ,Leaburn,Godden,Kelman, Mbick and TC is plenty of strikers.
If we are keeping Godden then Dykes is not needed. And Leaburn hasn't shown enough in this division to keep going forward.
TC isnt a striker so you can cross him off that list too.
Mbick & Kanu probably need another season out on loan. They certainly aren't Championship strikers as of yet.
If we are serious about not only staying in this League next season but also making strides up the table then we need much better strikers than what we've had this season.
Look how much Birmingham paid for Stansfield. In League One.0 -
I mean Colchester’s manager said Mbick is the best striker he’s worked with in 17 years, and he is built for Nathan Jones ball he could be a wildcard for next seasonSword65pf said:Having watched the quality of player in the championship, if we plan on using either Kanu, Mbick next season as high up the list options we are going nowhere fast. With respect to them both they have performed in league 2, a long way from the quality we need. Anyone that seriously feels they are options really can’t have been taking notice of this season.2 -

just qualified as a Financial Advisor - hopefully he doesn't need those skills just yet3

A no brainer to get him onboard for the coming season and he’s happy enough to sign a new contract that was offered to him
Goals were at a premium last season and a fit Godden can get that number up

This is a smart move. Expect he is on relatively low wages given his age. He wont necessarily expect to be first choice but is there as an option if needed both off the bench and to cover form and fitness. He brings experience when a lot of our attakers are younger and have played less in the champ. I am hoping Kelman with a year in the Champ comes back next year improved and sharp and makes that shirt his own, but another year with Godders to learn from is only gonna help.12

New contract suggests we might have got him on lower wages, otherwise we'd have triggered the extension5

Now the goal celebration makes sense.Elthamaddick said:just qualified as a Financial Advisor - hopefully he doesn't need those skills just yet

Not overly bothered by it, we still need a new striker of higher quality than we already have0

Or the extension could only be triggered if he made enough appearances?fenaddick said:New contract suggests we might have got him on lower wages, otherwise we'd have triggered the extension
Good news either way, if only as an option off the bench and more experience in the squad.2 -
The least he deserved.10
-
Probably deserving of a contract but I'm not expecting much from him.
Already said he's not going to be fit in time for the first game so his pre-season is bound to be a bit disrupted.1 -
True, but we would have needed that anyway. An extra body and a bit of experience around the training ground is always a bonus, if it means Kelman/Leaburn/new striker can be rested/rotated a bit in cup fixtures etc then it's all good.AberystwythAddick said:Not overly bothered by it, we still need a new striker of higher quality than we already have3 -
Good he deserves it... Not just for a bit of loyalty after the year he's had, and because we wouldn't be un the Championship without his goals that got us promoted... But the fact that even after a difficult year, he still came back and scored some crucial goals to get us results to help qvoid relegation12
-
He was still hobbling around trying to chase the ball with a broken leg. Absolute warrior.13
-
Yeah, and that's great he looks good. But wildcard suggests just that. It's pretty near to squad member. Not starting line up.Crispywood said:

Really pleased that Matty has signed for another year his technique and movement will still bring him goals either from the start or off the bench really positive news.2

He's a perfect player to have coming off the bench to try and poach a goal, or to hold up the ball and bring others into play.
Hadn't realised he had broken his leg when he played on, he definitely has the character you want from someone in the team.10 -
what about Sundays around lunchtime ? lolgolfaddick said:

Good to have him for another year, but we still need new strikers. Without investment in this area I worry we'll be battling relegation again.0

That’s the spiritAberystwythAddick said:Not overly bothered by it, we still need a new striker of higher quality than we already have2 -
I’m pretty whelmed by this one. Provided it’s taking up very little of our budget, which I assume is the case, then it’s a decent move. I’d call it functional.
Hoping we can start shipping some of the deadwood out. Won’t be easy, but it’s vital to us having room to manoeuvre to bring in players of the quality we need to be competitive in what will be a tough league next season.2 -
Fantastic, it needed to be done.2
-
In a world where u have players like Sam Field going for 3M, keeping Godden on a free is very sensible business.
even if he comes back next season and is past it arguably one of the best characters to have in the dressing room3 -
This is completely missing the point. We will sign another striker and that was never in doubt. What re signing Godden does is give us a fantastic poacher that due to his age will be used sparingly and from the bench. Not many better finishers in The Championship. True he’s not going to be available every week but I think there’s hardly a better player we could have signed for what Jones will expect from him.AberystwythAddick said:Not overly bothered by it, we still need a new striker of higher quality than we already have17 -
All good. I would have been more surprised if he didn’t sign.I suspect it means we play hardball over any negotiation with Dykes assuming we are also signing someone new.2
