Harry Clarke was not in the squad today, giving an opportunity to Jayden Fevrier to make an impact in the right wingback position. Former Addick, Thierry Small was on the bench for the visitors, having scored a glorious own goal in his last outing.

This match burst into being with immediate action for the home side. In the opening minute Greg Docherty’s explosive left-foot volley from 18 yards went narrowly over the bar but signaled the Addick’s early intent.

Only moments later, after the visitors had a slight chance themselves, Tyreece Campbell’s cross from the left found Joe Rankin-Costello at the far post but his header hit flush on the far post and into the keeper’s arms.

Campbell through the middle shot from just outside the box with his left foot was saved by the keeper on 17 minutes. The clearance went out for a throw in that Sonny Carey launched into the box. It was flicked on by a Preston player as Joe Rankin-Costello floated unmarked into the centre of the box to side foot it emphatically past the keeper to open the scorning for the home side.

Then on 20 minutes, Jayden Fevrier manufactured a run on squeezed a ball that cut through the heart of the Preston defense but it was the wrong side of a well positioned Tyreece Campbell and the chance went begging. The two combined again a little later, resulting in a Campbell shot from just in the box that was saved. Charlton had their foot on the gas on what looked from the live stream to be a glorious day in the SE7 sunshine, bar a bit of a swirling wind, made even sweeter by the Addicks getting off to a good start.

Despite the bright start, it was a short throw in set piece that brought the visitors level; a Lewis Dobbin looping header on 25 minutes through a cross from the right. Where we looked very fluid in attack, uncharacteristically poor defending let Preston off the hook.

Another chance came Preston’s way on just under 28 minutes. Devine was set loose through the right side, centre, but the final shot was easily saved by Will Mannion. Charlton then set off on an attack of their own through Tyreece Campbell on the left that Preston managed to scramble away.

On about 34 minutes, Lloyd Jones spent a period off the pitch, having committed a pullback that saw him booked, he went down to receive treatment for what seemed like a groin issue. When he came back on he seemed to be moving a little gingerly.

Things fizzled out a little at the end of the first half for the home side. Preston came into it after their equaliser. After a little over three minutes of added time both sides went into the dressing rooms even at a goal apiece.

The second half started slowly in contrast to the first. A little rain shower in the sun added some drizzle to the conditions. Preston had perhaps the best chance of the opening six minutes when Daniel Jebbison beat out Kayne Ramsay to get on the end of a low, driven cross across the goal, but his plunging shot went just wide.

Once in almost complete control, the home side were now conceding all momentum to the northerners. Nathan Jones replaced Joe Rank-Costello and Luke Chambers, bringing on Ibrahim Fullah and Matty Godden, who tasted goal in his last outing. Charlton looked more lively and the game came to life. A counterattack on 60 minutes, Sonny Carey drove forward before turning the ball over to Greg Docherty. His probing resulted on a shot from the edge of the box was low and driven, on target, but straight into the keeper’s arms.

It was Preston that pulled ahead on 65 minutes. Ibrahim Fullah lost possession in front of the Preston goal and the visitors turned to the counter rapidly, moving the ball down the centre of the pitch, turning Lloyd Jones and Kayne Ramsay on their heels. Preston had numbers, with Potts running from deep to take that ball in stride as he burst into the box. Poor closing down saw Ramsay and Jones slide into the tackle, both unable to affect the final shot. Mannion was beat and the visitors were ahead.

On 69 minutes the Addicks faithful rose in anger as Matty Godden was forcefull levered off the ball in the box. The shove sent him to ground but the referee was unmoved despite the home crowd’s protestations. Soon after, Fullah was brought down thirty yards out. The Addicks weren’t able to make anything out of the free kick but that signaled the beginning of a period of pressure for the home side.

Preston made a couple of changes and when play resumed, Jayden Fevrier took possession on the left. He beat his man then found himself dribbling through traffic. He beat one, then two, then perhaps even another as he burst into space in the box. His driven cross cannoned around a bit before a Preston defenders swipe almost put the ball in the back of the net, if not for the keeper’s reaction save. In fact, he may not have known much about it, but I give him the benefit of the doubt.

Miles Leaburn replaced Tyreece Campbell as Nathan Jones looked to engineer something we haven’t done in some sixteen home games; score more than one goal. Moments later, Fullah’s cross form the right looked promising, but it went long and the Addicks were running out of time. Fullah was outmuscled on the ball and Preston had another quick counter. It ultimately came to nothing as the final shot went well wide but Preston were looking good for all three points. that would be five losses in the last six at home as we look to stutter over the line for Championship survival.

With six minutes of normal time remaining, Miles Leaburn almost found Matty Godden in the box with a flick over his head, but the final shot fell to Sonny Carey. It was deflected away for a corner but it showed that Preston were still vulnerable. Charlton were looking for a last throw of the dice, bringing on Luke Berry for Sonny Carey. Matt Godden went over in the box again, this time pushed down with the lightest of touches as he jumped up. Moments later, Amari’i Bell swung the ball in from the right and Godden engineered a shot from close range that was deselected up and over the bar.

Charlton were in the hunt but the action was end to end. Preston had a counter jab that came to nothing but it showed how stretched we were in looking for the equaliser. In added time, Charlton desperately pressed ahead. Dykes had an effort that was saved, then Fullah had a shot that resulted in the same. Then the ball fell to Dykes in the box again but his last ditch shot was deflected away for a corner. Lloyd Jones got his head on the cross but it went wide.

Ultimately, Charlton ran out of time and Preston escaped with the win. Charlton started well and had moments but were outdone by the more experienced side. More frustration for us compounds our end of season woes.

Charlton 1 Preston 2
Over to you.

Oxford and Pompey winning makes it tighter and tighter. Just one more win, didn’t think it would be this hard

We'll be okay, have you seen Portsmouth's run-in?

Like I said, our survival comes down to the Wednesday game. We have them at a good time

Like November all over again. This is incredibly worrying, really struggling to see where the points will come from

    WBA and Blackburn look safe
Oxford are going on a great run

Portsmouth may have turned a corner too.

Just need Oxford and Pompey to be shitter than us over next couple of weeks, which is by no means a foregone conclusion imo

And in typical Charlton fashion we will lose!

Let's just see how next Saturday goes. All I hear on X and certain podcasts is how Weds is a guaranteed 3 points. If only the championship was like that.

If we go down, we fully deserve it. Sleep walking to league 1.

I can see Wednesday getting their second win of the season next week, and bearing in mind we have Hull and Ipswich to come at home, I really can see us remaining pointless from our remaining games. A swift return to League One is on the cards.
After sixty seven years and numerous relegations, believe me, this lot have the look of a doomed team.

Frustrating performance really... We looked as good as what we have been this season inside the first 20mins, took a deserved lead and then let Preston back into it with a bit of a sloppy goal... The difference taking the lead in the last two games compared to Bristol City and Preston has been like night and day, for some reason our ability to get in the way of everything has just deserted us again.
Second Half hinged on whoever scored first, we had chances, Preston had the possession and got the lucky break to seal it, and then were able to shut up shop again. This Division is all about tight margins as we're learning the hard way.

They've just managed a point at the league leaders, while we've failed to beat 3 teams with nothing to play for. How is it a good time exactly?

We’ve only scored more than one goal five times this season, let that sink in. We are ‘one goal Chartlon’ and the Championship’s gift.

Beating Middlesbrough isn't the end of the world, given how they've fallen off a cliff with their promotion push
But just need to hope that this is more of a flash in the pan for Portsmouth rather than rejuvination

Haven't thought we've been in trouble for weeks, but today has changed that. We seemed to have lost that grit we had and that teams down the bottom need. Nervy few weeks ahead

    First 25 mins were great!

But once they scored, our heads seemed to go and it was downhill from there.

Realistically it’s beat Wednesday and we’ll be OK.

Problem is we are still struggling to score and even though we’re creating we just cannot put chances away.

The midfield at this level is just broken. Team has too
many grafters and a complete lack of quality.

If we don’t add significant quality to the middle of the park I think we’ll really struggle next season.

They are better away than at home.

We are better away than at home.

We’ll rightly be favourites but that doesn’t mean it won’t be nervy.

I can see Wednesday getting their second win of the season next week.
I watched them today and they were good .  They will beat us if they play like they did at Coventry and we go into the game not to lose instead of attempting to win it.

Because we're terrible and need to play the worst team in the league's history (shut up @garrymanilow )

That’s a shocking result. Preston were dire, so what does that say about us.

Such a lack of composure in the last third.

Can’t score more than one and can’t keep a clean sheet. Not a great situation to be in

Apparently we are strong at home…..

16 games since we scored more than one goal at home, 3 defeats on the trot at home, 3 points from the last 6 home games.

Every home game at the moment is like ground hog day. Huff and puff and never really look like scoring.

There was a period of 20 odd mins in the 2nd half where we switched off completely and were so flat it’s ridiculous.

Have been saying for weeks, we are miles from safe. Our form is appalling, we can no longer keep a clean sheet and we do not have enough goals in the team.

If we go into the last game needing something I have zero faith that this lot will get it.

Relegation would be an utter disaster.
