Well the rules say this season but I fail to see how they apply it and hear an appeal in time. They have a favourable fixture list so this season would be best5

Can't see anything coming of it. Though the excess is c£16m and doesnt on the surface seem "insignificant", it's over 2 seasons with last seasons losses much lower.
"The exact amount of West Brom’s breach is not thought to be significant and only a minor number above loss limits, but a points deduction, transfer ban or fine are all potential punishments.Football League clubs have to submit their annual accounts for the previous financial year by December 31. In March, West Brom reported an operating loss of £17m, which was down from £31m in their previous financial accounts. Their overall losses since July 2022 are £55.6m, which exceeds the permitted amount of a maximum £39m over the three-year reporting period."

WBA haven't even been obvious big spenders in recent seasons, but it shows how wage costs can get out of control, especially with dead wood that you can't get rid of, because their wages are so high.5 -
Surely there's no chance their case gets heard this season (which ends in 3 weeks). Leicester's charge was from 23/24 and only just got resolved last week.

Next season would be ideal please. If they have a points deduction, one of Oxford and Portsmouth stay up, Blackburn I cant see being much cop. Lincoln and 2 other teams coming up. There could be quite a few weak teams down the bottom next year which can hopefully help us avoid second season syndrome.

The possibility that all 3 relegated teams could be teams that have had points deductions is farcical and should really bring government attention. More needs to be done to make clubs live within their means. The owners clearly don’t care about points deductions.4

Clubs are laying players more and more that they can't actually afford - it is a ludicrous situation. The argument is that if they have been overpaying players and exceeding FFP THIS SEASON, then surely they have cheated the other teams in the division this season and any points deduction or fine should be this season not next? I am sure Wendies and Leicester will both see that as fair considering their fate.
We suffered at the hands of Wendies a few years ago when their deduction was delayed to the following year.9 -
Wasn’t there an instance before where points deduction was applied this season then an appeal went on into the summer - so teams didn’t even know if they’d been relegated after the season had finished or not?Perhaps the Wigan deduction last time we were in the champ? Can see similar happening with this, just hope we aren’t affected ..0

You can argue more should be done (such as clubs having to prove their financial viability and show budgets BEFORE each season starts or face automatic relegation) but punishing clubs for breaking the rules is a good thing and not IMHO farcical.Diebythesword said:The possibility that all 3 relegated teams could be teams that have had points deductions is farcical and should really bring government attention. They do a version of this in Spain, in effect you can't register players that you can't show you can budget for. It seems fairly succesful, even if Barcelona always find a way around itHenry Irving said:

There should be real clarity regarding breaking the rules.
That way any punishment can be handed out quickly.
As things stand once a club appeals any punishment it takes months to resolve.
This needs to change.9 -
In France too I believe. Shows it is possible even if, as you say, it will never be perfect as clubs will look for evermore snidey ways to get around the rules. Thankfully, no premier league clubs would even think of such things!fenaddick said:

Agree with others there has to be a set agreed punishment. Say for three points up to ten million over, 6 points for that up to fifteen million, 9 points for up to twenty million and anything above that 12 points and a year's transfer ban. If it is proper set parameters then there is no reason the punishment can't be instant and no reason for appeal.
This would have to be agreed by all the clubs though.1 -

A relatively minor infringement, so you imagine it'll just be a couple of points. Next season, nobody cares, but this season, it's so tight down there, that it would drop them below Oxford into the bottom 3.
What's interesting, is that all 3 clubs with point deductions or potential deductions are strugglers, so the years of financial mismanagement haven't delivered a decent side on the pitch.1 -
