    "Who is your football team?"
    "Charlton"
    "yes my friend, Jorge Costa!"
Granted that was in a bar in Porto so that was a bit of a cheat code
    Had similar in Milan

”Who you guys support in England?”
    ”Charlton”
    ”Ah, Paolo di Canio!”.

Admittedly this was around 2004, we had a bit of a higher profile then.

About ten years ago two fellas come into work to fix some equipment, one was Pompey, the other Aston Villa. We had a long debate about whose club was in the most chaos, I think Pompey edged it, against strong competition. I came out with the old chestnut about them finding the only Arab without any money, the guy said that better than that they found the only Arab that didn’t exist! Some mythical figure who was waiting in the wings to bail them out, but was never identified or introduced. Probably on the boat full of rubber/bananas we’ve been waiting for since 1984.

They answer: Sam Bartram. You don't remember him do you? (I do). Then they say  "they used to get 70 thousand at the Valley every week!

Living in Denmark I usually get a response along the lines of “oh yeah Claus Jensen. Great player back in the day”

    Cheltenham?
I get this a lot. How unintelligible must the south London accent be that it can be confused. And why the fuck would anyone with a south London accent support Cheltenham. And why, If anyone wasn’t sure what they heard,  would they assume Cheltenham before Charlton?
Exactly. Sorting out the Middle East is child’s play compared to that.

I watched with amusement until 2:48 when he said ’my girlfriend and I’. How is that possible?

    Yep, always add Athletic now.
When people ask who I support I always respond with "The Mighty Charlton Athletic" lol

My dad used to go to Charlton.
This is the one that gets me. How come every Liverpool/Man Utd/Arsenal/Chelsea etc fan who hails from miles from the place I have ever met tells you they support them because their dad (who also comes from miles from the place) did, and they would have been thrown out of the house if they didn't support them too, but Charlton dads seem perfectly happy for their offspring to "support" Liverpool/Man Utd/Arsenal/Chelsea etc... ?

Since I moved up North, the most common response I get is: 'good away day, that', followed by 'thank fuck for that, I just assumed you'd be a gooner'

Must admit here in Plymouth there seems to be a quiet respect, which seems to stem from the 5-0 and 6-1 wins.
Quiet respect in Plymouth. Surely not.

Remember the 5-0 and the paint on the goal Posts .🤣🤣 Charlton lost that weekend.

    Home Park love it.

I remember about 35 years ago travelling by train from Narvik, in the Arctic Circle to Helsinki, when passing through Lapland, a local fella got on the train and tried to talk to me in his local patois - sorry, I said, I'm British. And so he spoke to me in very broken English and offered me whiskey from his inside jacket pocket.

Inevitably, we talked about football and I mentioned that I supported Charlton.

"Ah, yes", he said, "Bobby Charlton!"
