A bit of a drop off in his performances lately and I thought Saturday was his worst showing for us. He’s still a player I like, but not as much as I used to!

Defensively he has been found wanting against tricky wingers, see West Brom and Portsmouth performances. Positionally he is often caught out - though admittedly some of this is because of our formation, as TC was v Preston. And I don’t need to go over the amount of chances he’s missed.

It’s a tricky position to play, and recruit for. The ideal player would have to be a great athlete, comfortable with the ball at feet, able to put a cross in, willing to take players on and defensively sound. It’s obvious that most players are going to be lacking in at least one element of what is required. The issue for Clarke lately is that he’s not contributing with goals or assists and he has been off the pace defensively. It will be interesting to see how Ramsay fares (if fit) v Ipswich, with Collins hopefully behind him. If it’s not Ramsay I’d like to see JRC given a chance in the role we were told he could play!
I just don’t think JRC has it in him athletically to play wing back for us. Maybe in the kind of role Chambers is playing where he drifts inside but we can’t have both wing backs doing that

It will be Ramsay I’m sure of it. Ipswich will have Clarke or Philogene on the left along with Leif Davis so we will need it to be Ramsay and Sichenje to deal with that danger

I’m unsure on Clarke, clearly a very good player but I’m not sure if he’s the right profile for what we actually need at RWB. If we want to be more creative and better going forward next season then I’m not sure he’s the answer, but then he’s a good championship player so I’d probably still want to keep him because they aren’t easy for us to sign
I am only talking about starting JRC if Ramsay is injured as I don't love the thought of Fevrier there v Ipswich.

It is one position we've always had good options so I understand why he hasn't started there, but I am a bit surprised we haven't tried JRC at RWB as an in game change at some point (unless my memory is failing me). I think it would improve our ability to create with the ball, but perhaps it upsets the balance of the team too much. The club / manager made such a point of his versatility when he was signed but maybe Jones has come to the same assessment as yourself. I definitely didn't expect him to be getting most of his minutes in the attaching midfield role.

I think Sichenje is probably quicker than Ramsay and also has more of an eye for an attacking pass.
In which case it's better to be central. More effective to break lines from a more central channel than the wing. His pace is good for recovery too

I'm just glad we've got options for a change.

He's a RB. At wing-back, he doesn't have the quality to be productive in the final third. He's missed nearl open goals, and most banked on the goals 'will come'. They haven't. The attempts to put us ahead against Wrexham and Portsmouth were woeful.

He's awful in front of goal and to me, comes across as if he thinks he's better than he is.
  • After a few games, I thought yup this is the guy to fill our right wing back slot and we really need to sign him.

Now I'm far from certain about signing him.

Can't put my finger on it but there's something about his play that I don't like. Maybe it's the fact he so often gets caught out of position. Or maybe, as the poster above said, he just thinks he's better than he is.

I know it won't be possible to resign Bree but I'd much rather have him than Clarke.

Been very poor these last few games. Also think he's more of a right back than a wing back. I think (hope) we can do better.

In two moments of madness today he gave the ball away and Geldhart should have scored then a wayward header gave away the corner from which they ultimately scored. He's gone backwards. Whether that is injury or fatigue from not having played regularly before he joined us who knows. Added to that he's probably on decent wages. Can we do better? Maybe but I don't know who else is out there that's better and affordable but thankfully that's not my job.

Brownie said today Clarke is very good technically, I get what he means but at this level we need more well rounded players. He doesn’t fully convince me defensively but works hard and physically competes, going forward I want more from our wing backs than he’s offered us.

Saying that there’s no doubt all out wide players and strikers would look better with a stronger central midfield, whereas I don’t think our central midfield goes up a level if we improve ours strikers and wide players.

I'm not a fan, and he seems to be a high maintenance persona from where I sit.

    A Love Island footballer!

I’d probably still sign him  as a utility player , but he’s not as good as I first thought

I thought he suffered from Sichenje having to go off... the swap having to bring Burke on, meant that Clarke couldn't be so forward thinking.
Clarke wasn't having the best of games up until that point regardless, but forcing him to be more defensive made him worse.

He's been fucking awful recently, makes the wrong decisions over and over again and it's directly led to goals for the opposition.

He's also very quick to blame others and moan when they don't pass to him, then moans when he fucks up and misplaces a pass, he can do no wrong in his own eyes

None of the above helps his case for giving that corner away with the amateur of headers?

Funny if that was TC or Macca.

Clarke is a fans favourite for a reason I don't get.

Would take him on a free if wages were not silly, as back up RWB to Bree (I hope!).

Ed.  His attitude is spot on in my opinion.  Works incredibly hard and gees up the crowd.  Surprised at some of the comments above about him moaning / being a live island footballer.

They will be. I'd just focus on his performances and they've been all over the shop.

Been off it for a few games but still think he’s worth signing if the deal is right for us. I know it’s not the most appealing trait to have but those long throw ins have won us a fair few points this year

They were a bit poor today but he did one that was inch perfect for Kelman who couldn’t quite control it

A poor game today. All players make mistakes, but he made too many bad errors, and right from the start with the breakaway which led to Sichenje getting a booking.

Awful today. His fault for the goal giving a silly corner away, and also for Sichenje getting booked early by giving the ball away. I’m not to sure on him long term

I think people have turned on him a little too quickly. He picked up a knee injury that kept him out recently and came back very quickly, probably could have done with more time out because it’s coincided with his loss of form. He started well and people were in love with him but now apparently we need better. I think it would be good to have him and a more attacking option for games where we need to get at teams more. We play him very high which doesn’t always suit him because he’s better at crossing from deeper than getting on the end of chances. Still been a very good signing for us and helped us get important points

I get people thinking he’s not quite what we need, but let’s not overlook the fact he has overall done a pretty good job since coming in and shown full commitment for us when we needed it, he’s been a real good pro coming to us on loan and I thank him for his efforts.

Ipswich fans said he was a great defender with a lot of heart but had the capacity to have an absolute mare - I think we’re beginning to see that.

IMO we should still look to sign him permanently, for his long throws alone. I think there was one perfect one near the end that just bounced awkwardly for Kelman in lots of space.

I noticed that about him too, very quick to start pointing fingers at people even after his own mistakes. I’d like to think we’d thank him for his efforts but look for other options.
  • If he can be kept, he should be kept. I like him. There's no guarantee of any new signing working out, and squad continuity is important.

I'd take him as a squad player, he's got the skill and experience for the Championship and having his long throws as an option isn't a bad thing at all. But you can see why a team with genuine promotion aspirations was happy to let him go, too.

    Absolutely this.

Dire player whose personality you could really do without in a team that tries to give their all.

He always reminds me of Lucy Bronze in the England Women's team - mediocre at best, liability at worst - loads of bad errors but thinks she's something she isn't, and castigates her own players at every opportunity (to try and cover her own shortcomings)

Hopefully never see him in a Charlton shirt again.

Funny how we had two players play on the right, both start really well and majority saying good signings and happy to try to keep them.

Both got an injury and rushed back and seemingly played with injury/not fully fit (arguably shows their commitment to the cause) so both suffer a dip in form.

Then people say they're both donkeys and we can do better. Both played for play-off/promotion teams yet are not good enough for a team who just scraped survival.
