London Marathon - under two hours

Sabastian Sawe becomes the first man to break the two hour barrier in a competitive marathon- 1.59.30 (and the guy in second also breaks it!). Kipchoge's under two hours was a demonstration event with huge assistance, but this is an official WR.

Unbelievable achievement - one of the greatest athletic challenges achieved. Historic.

Many congratulations Sabastian - in absolute awe.

Amazing achievement, bet he finished and walked casually off to the pub as well
Spare a thought for the guy who finished second, also until 2hrs... No one will ultimately care about him

Set a treadmill at 21kph ( max most will go to) and try to run for 30 seconds on it.

That's what he did for 1 hour, 59 minutes and 30 seconds.

    Incredible.

Up there with the four minute mile as a landmark running moment.

That's absolutely incredible. A record I didn't expect anyone to ever beat without controlled conditions.

I wonder how many people on here could run 100 metres in 17 seconds.

    Just one 100 metres.

Now imagine running at that pace for 26 miles - or the equivalent of running 420 x 100 metres races back to back, all at roughly 17 seconds a pop.

    Amazing.

Still, if the DLR isn't working then needs must ......

After covering the first half of the course in 1:00:29, Sawe moved through the gears to complete the second half in just 59:01.

Only 63 men in history have run a half marathon as quickly as that - with Sawe's own personal best standing at 58:05.

His splits continued to quicken as he chased down his target, clocking 13:54 for the five kilometres from 30-35km, and 13:42 for the 35-40km stretch - an average pace of 2:45 per kilometre.

Kajelcha is an amazing athlete and that sub 2 for 2nd was his first ever marathon. First marathon and would have broke the WR

I'm trying to comprehend how you can run 26 miles in under 2 hours.  Can't get my head around it.  Mad

Cheeky shout out to my wife who ran the Nantes marathon today for the 4th time. I took the kids ( my eldest celebrating his 18th birthday today) there by train for the 1st time and surprised her near the finishing line.

When the adidas pro evo 3’s come on the market, they will be the hottest shoe in history.

I remember about six years ago, when I was still long distance running and there were some Nike shoes designed to try and break these Marathon records - Only about £150 so decided to get a version of them, and you could just feel how much more comfortable it felt to be able to run faster in them

My daughter Caitlin was one of the stories featured on the BBC and the eagle eyed will spot a Charlton shirt on the wall while she’s on the treadmill. Well done to all the runners and support peeps out there today 🙌🏃🏻‍♀️

I expect that Nike will be moth balling their alphafly 4 prototype of the back of this.

Actually, running on pavements and roads is even harder. Insane achievement. I'm still proud of my 3:30 😂

Call it 2 hours. Then divide by 2 to get miles per hour and it's 13mph. Not that fast really as I expect most on here could run at about 20mph if they had to.

I had to work today but popped down to Blackfriars after at around 7 pm. It was the bit I struggled with when I did it 10 yeas ago!
It was the last knockings and some really struggling bodies trying to push themselves round. One fella was really going through it with tears in his eyes. I gave him a big Clap and shout and hopefully helped push him towards the finish line like those that gave me that final push when I did it.
