Have heard from a friend that Ahadme will be getting a free transfer despite two years still remaining on his contract. What a waste of money he has been.
I wouldn’t even see it as a free transfer. If a club is willing to take his wages off us we’re at the very minimum saving 500k on wasted wages over the next 2 years.

Makes it even more annoying we could have made 300k back, and saved a years worth of wages if he just joined Bolton and properly tried to restart his career.

I think any permanent move for Ahadme will involve us paying a chunk of that money to him anyway unfortunately

It won't be a free transfer though will it. If we are releasing him then we'd be paying him an agreed chunk of the wages he'd be owed for the remainder of his contract.
  • Still feel like we need a centre back to play in a three, mentioned Oliver Casey from Blackpool before, he’s definitely ready for a step-up, even if it’s as cover. Either Jack Taylor from Ipswich or Galbraith from Swansea (who we really should have got last year) would be huge upgrades but not at a hefty price.

I’m hoping we will be in the market for better players this summer but there is absolutely no chance of us signing Galbraith or Taylor

When I said free transfer I meant there will not be a transfer fee. Obviously they will have to pay him off that goes without saying.

It is a free transfer as there is no transfer fee.

Will be interesting to see how much the owners will invest this summer.

    I really do think we need;

    - a goalkeeper
    - 2 wing backs
    - creative midfielder
    - ball carrying attacking midfielder
    - a striker
    - at least 1 winger, maybe 2

It’s how we develop goal scoring opportunities that may dictate how we do next season. We need better service to our front line and midfield need to chip in with a few goals too.

I think there are potential signings all over the place, but the clear-out and new business needs to start early doors, like Curbs use to do.

if we are still trying to sort out our squad in July, I will be worried.

NJ needs the Board, owners and scouts to really step up in the next 2-3 months.

The board have already stepped up 12 mill last summer and 20 mill to cover both Jan and summer windows …l
Not saying that they have not supported the team in the last year, but if we want to stay in this league, it will need investment and a clearout of players who are not good enough.

If, as I think you might be saying, suggest that recruitment could have been better, then I would not argue with that.

Question is…. Are we happy to stay as we are and most likely get relegated next season?

The owners have lost money this year, so if they cannot support the club to a level that helps us stay in the championship, then maybe other investors might also be needed.

Attendances and season ticket sales are up, so we supporters have done all we can to support the club.

I'm not sure about moving A Mitchell on. We sent a bunch out on loan and he and Kanu progressed. Mitchell is only 24 I think, and I like his character.
Nice bloke but no way a championship defender based on what I saw when he played for us in L1

Will be interesting to see if anything comes of the additional investment rumours in time for the summer window. Could make a bit of a difference if there's some new money around.

I don't know if I buy the £20m budget rumours , that's feels a bit plucking numbers out of thin air.

The £20m numbers flying around might be our wage budget for next season possibly? There’s no chance we are spending that on transfer fees unless we sell a few players for good money

£20m on wages would make more sense. There's not a lot of players that would go for substantial enough fees to get to a £20m transfer budget and it would go against Carter's comments about sustainability.

The £20m number is simpler to explain. When Matt Slater said the owners were seeking outside investment he said he guessed it would be £20m. It was then discussed that further investment would help us in the transfer market. It's 2+2=5 and has now become a thing

Oh now it makes sense!!! I'd forgotten the Matt Slater figure was £20m. That ties everything together now.

Expect this to be one of the most exciting summer transfer windows in decades. Value will come from overseas Asian and some of the Euro leagues but World Cup may increase valuations so let’s see. Am genuinely hoping we get one or two Japanese players in as they are technically gifted/coached and have become reliably decent at Champ and Prem in general.

Rather than what I would want to see, I think we will witness the following:

    Out

Mannion, Asiimwe, Mitchell (BOTH), Gillesphy, Berry, Docherty, Taylor, Anderson, Apter, Tanto and Dykes

While that is 12 out of in reality that is only 5 of the current matchday squad. Add to that departing loans of Chambers, Clarke, Fevrier and Coady. Can see us trying for Clarke and Fev (particularly if Stockport would be willing to entertain a swap deal).

I think a few of our retained younger players eg Kanu and Leaburn may go out on a 1/2 or full season loan likely both at League One level and so we will need around 9 new players in to improve what will be a much depleted squad.

I don’t think either Cov or JRC will be going anywhere, our system and style of play has suited neither particularly this season, NJ will evolve it next season imho. Would not be surprised to see us using the 5-2-2-1 system as we did vs Hull - helps control the midfield a lot better but dependent upon goalscoring CAMs.

I think realistically we're looking at losing the loans plus three or four of the current squad. Anyone out on loan I would either sell or loan, with the exception of Mbick.

    I would like to see 1 × GK, 2 × RWB, 1 × LWB/CB, 2 × MF, 2 × FWD.

Couple of ideas. Sean Roughan for the LWB/LCB or Adaramola as a LWB and Edwards cover LCB. Imray and Mills for the RWB. Charlie Savage and Callum Styles for the Midfield. A Rak Sakyi as a forward option, maybe someone like Donley or Lankshear as other options. No idea about Goalkeeper.

I know none bar JRS might excite massively but I think realistic and would improve the squad.

If we go down the route of looking at league one strikers with potential again, Ballard, Tolaj and pebble have all done well and still young enough to improve further.

Respectfully I don’t agree with your assertion there is no chance we sign Taylor, I’ll be surprised if he goes up to the Premier League as they’ll have money to spend on upgrading that area, it’s a player we need to be focussing on, especially as his alleged transfer fee is low. Take your point on Galbraith as he’s just moved but these are the types of players we need to be aiming for. Championship oven ready and not bank breakers but add a step up in quality.
  • I hope majority of our signings  comprise of proven consistent, injury free championship experience as the foundation.

Then can add to that with the odd League One gamble/ premier league loan but will be essential to get in players proven at this level who can play 40 plus games a season without breaking down.

Any players that stuck it out at Luton that we can now swoop in for? Mengi, Adebayo and Jones might be worth a look...

Realistically we'll sign a mix of poaching the best League 1 players, players relegated from the championship this season, free transfers from higher up championship teams, and a couple of foreign punts

Adebayo would be the most likely, considering he’s 28 and available on a free. Others are either too old from Jones time or would cost a big chunk of money to sign.

Happy to gamble on frees not players costing us 3-4M

I with you on this one.

Just cant see the big clear out that lots on here are suggesting. Yes, players like Berry will leave but cant see Carey JRC or Coventry going. Maybe they will offload Apter & Tanto but that's about it imo. We will need a RWB and cover for Edwards and better striking options. If you add in a creative midfielder that's half a dozen for starters.

Will be an interesting summer for sure but I'll stick my neck out now & say 6 out of 10, just so I dont have to keep popping back on here to read 100 fish puns and the countdown to 100 pages.

I think we need to find a balance of good free agents, gambling fees on high end League 1 players and same goes for top flight leagues abroad. Millwall have shown a bit of a template in that regard.

Crama, Azeez and Caleb Taylor were all top League 1 players recently and have stepped up. They signed Ivanovic and De Norre from European top flight clubs who have been a success.

We should be looking to do the same. It's affordable, doesn't come at the risk of massive financial debt and of course makes us sustainable.

League 1 players like Ethan Pye, Archie Collins, Lorent Tolaj are players who are high end who could make the step up, reasonable wages with scope to improve.

Need to be looking at the Danish, Swedish, and especially Dutch top flights. There will be extremely talented players in those leagues who will be able to adjust to English football and will come cheaper without the English price tag.

What I don't want to see again is a bunch of lazy signings like ex Luton players or current, hardly any of them have really worked out.
Top end League One players is basically what we did last summer with Kelman, Knibbs, Carey, Tanto, Apter, an attempt at Galbraith.

Am almost positive people would kick up a fuss if we went after Pye, Collins and Tolaj as the examples you gave. “We haven’t learnt from our mistakes last summer, more third tier players” etc.

The problem isn’t that we signed league 1 players, there are plenty capable of stepping up - the problem was that we didn’t complement that with championship experience until January.

Take the strikers that started the season. Only Godden had championship experience and he wasn’t fit for 95% of the season. Leaburn will have benefited more from half a season learning from Dykes in training.

This summer we need to focus on experience to complement the potential we already have. It wouldnt surprise me if a lot of last summers signings look better as result.

Jones would make sense as an attacking RWB. Adebayo is injured again after coming back from an ACL but is one of NJs favs so could be an option.

We did, we just didn't do it well or in that window. I'm sure if we'd known Godden was going to be out this long we'd have brought in another striker with Championship experience. In midfield JRC has only ever played in the Championship, Carey had one season there, Doc had played three seasons in the Championship. In defence, Bell, Burke and Bree had all played in the Championship and above as had Kaminski. Tanto, Kelman, Knibbs and Apter had little/no Champtionship experience. By my maths we made 11 signings and only 4 of them didn't have Championship experience of some kind. And before that we'd brought in Doc, Godden and Berry (I know, not a great example) who did have that experience. Without injuries it would have been possible to field an XI without any of them making a Championship debut

Luton's policy of not announcing contract lengths is so annoying. If Adebayo turns out to be a free agent I can totally see him having a bit of a trial with us

I think Keenan Gough will be in the squad. Highly rated by the backroom.
