These two will make mincemeat of Arsenal

That might be irrelevant as I can see Simeone doing a job on them in the semi-final.

None of the extravagant football of last night to delight the viewers, so I'm off to bed. But I'm sure both teams plus their respective fans won't give a monkeys about that. Getting to the final is all that matters and they're right. Doesn't make great telly though.

Penalty rule feels a bit friendly for the attacking sides at the moment.

Pen last night and this one both feel soft.

After that game of sexy football last night, this semi is like catching a glimpse of Gemma Collins in see through underwear.

There surely have been less obvious penalties that that one.

If ones where the player is close like the Bell or last night’s are penalties, then that is.

Any time a ball hits a hand in the area these days it’s a penalty

I’m no Arsenal fan but they’ve been mugged here by the ref. Massive home influence in evidence here

Eze is already on his way down before the tiny bit of contact, we'd be fuming if it was given against us

But there is clear contact and the ref has given it. He hasn’t made a ‘clear and obvious’ error, which is what overturns should be for.

I hate players going down easily, but I hate VAR more.

But if you give them more people will go down more. Ironically Lookman stayed on his feet when he maybe shouldn't have and it isn't the Spanish team making the most of contact for once

Keown is a prize muppet. Don’t think I have ever disliked a pundit more than him.

If it was Spurs playing tonight, your free hand would be holding your camera 📸.

It's hard to see the disallowed penalty decision being a correct use of VAR. It was a soft penalty, but once it had been given, it wasn't a clear and obvious error that could be overturned as contact was made.

If the defender had touched the ball first, that would have been a legitimate reason for changing the decision as a cleat error, but in this case the referee has decided it wasn't a foul, when it was a foul. A very minor one, but a foul.

Not sure I'd get a semi watching the GC in see through underwear, but each to their own.

I am no lover of Arsenal but contact was made on Eze and it is incredible the decision was overturned IMO. We have had this nonsense for years now where even managers come out and say they don't know what is and isn't a penalty anymore. I think those that run the game are interfering fools. The solution to this and VAR is firstly to accept that perfect and totally consistent decisions are an imposibility. Then you say, hand ball has to have intent involved which is the ref's call or if it clearly prevents a goal.

Also, refs looking at screens is beyond stupid. A ref makes a decision, surely the VAR room decides if it is a mistake or not in pure terms. So for instance, there was no contact on Eze last night. The ref doesn't need to do anything, VAR just reports what they missed to them and the decision gets overturned. If like last night, there was contact then it should just be accepted as the ref's decision. When a ref is asked to look at something again, it is effectively putting a lot of pressure on them and suggesting they got it wrong. That is why is is extremely rare refs stick to their original decisions.

Didn't watch the game but saw this clip earlier. In real time i can absolutely see why a penalty was given, but when you see the slow mo there's no way that 'contact' is enough to make Eze fling himself forward.

I'd honestly be surprised if Arsenal don't go through from here. The one thing against them however is that Atletico have got nothing to play for, so will probably rest everyone this weekend. Arsenal can't do that.

It’s almost impossible to tell that from slow mo though, you need to see it at normal speed in full context of the movement and pace of players.

If somebody steps on your toes when you are running/moving forward would you be able to keep your balance ?; and, if not, would you instinctively try to control your fall ?

  • Whether they followed VAR rules or not I'm delighted Arsenal were not rewarded for one of their players clearly diving.  Never a penalty in a million years.

Moaning about the VAR decision is basically whinging Eze didn't get away with throwing himself over when the defender planted his foot next to Eze's.

Arteta 'Incredibly fuming' that they didn't get a penalty for that thing that definitely wasn't a penalty.

Same - Atletico haven't had a great season, and Arsenal have had good results in Europe this year.

He’s given a penalty, looked at it and realised it’s not actually a penalty - surely that falls under clear and obvious error

Watching Forest v Villa and will admit to feeling a little bit jealous of Forest fans. Only about ten years ago we were on a similar level in the Championship, now they’re in a European cup semi.

I know they have the historical precedent under Clough etc. but I didn’t imagine this would be them if you’d asked me in 2016.

Prime have a stadium noise only mode, which is usually great for games like this when you don't want to listen to Shearer, but the problem then is you can hear the Emirates crowd better and I think I'd rather sandbelt my own ears off than listen to 90 mins of that

That Arsenal XI starting a champions league semi final is absolutely criminal. Sums up how crap football really is these days.
