Charlton in Dundee derby scouting mission as two stars on summer transfer radar
The English Championship side have been keeping tabs on United's Will Ferry and Dundee's Luke Graham. The Addicks’ head of recruitment Phil Chapple took in United’s impressive 3-0 win over their city rivals. Dundee United’s Will Ferry netted two goals in a man-of-the-match performance
    Great name for a boat
There was a Woolwich Ferry boat named the Will Crooks (after a local MP) in the 60s.

Wasn’t there a boat named “wright crooks” after some of the previous club owners?

Am I remembering right that someone on the recruitment team (Calvin Charlton?) had quite a lot of Scottish football knowledge? Would make sense, it’s a cheap market

Yes I believe he's based up there from what Rodwell has said previously on meet the directors events

Was another Dundee defender a couple of years back Josh Mulligan who we were very heavily linked with. Ended up at Hibs in the end.

Played in midfield for Hibs I think and was talked about for a Scotland cap before picking up an injury in January.

These things do not play for me (maybe others) because it says ‘sign in to confirm that you’re not a bot’.
Happens a lot with links posted.

It is cheaper than trying to cherry pick the best of the English leagues but still has the advantage of the players not having much of a culture shock/language barrier as may be the case if you go further afield.

There does seem to be potential there as a market.
  • Seen enough, if we don’t get Ferry and Graham this window has been a disaster and we should probably just give up

We definitely enquired about him in January.

Ferry and Graham both seem to have 1 year left on their contracts, so I imagine there’s a good chance their clubs will look to cash in this summer.

And at 22 and 25 respectively that puts them in the sweet spot of having some experience but with potential to grow and possibly increase in value.

Good squad assessment in the latest Cawley/Mendez pod. Hadn’t realised Coventry was entering the last year of his deal. Does make the decision over him a bit trickier but given we didn’t pay a fee for him does make the idea of losing him on a free next summer a bit easier

I don’t think the fee would be that large if we sold now and we’d have to give West Ham half of it anyway. I think keep him around next season and if he does improve he can earn a new contract

I agree on the whole but I can see a world where someone like Huddersfield panic and offer a fee above his market value which might make the 50% we’d have to give away more palatable

I'd offer Coventry a new deal, again two years if he'll sign it... I think we'd be setting up too big a challenge for ourselves to expect almost a fresh start with the squad - The likes of Coventry / Docherty can become the squad players next season, never know with an improvement next to him, we might even see a greatly improved Conor.
George Dobson for example has done well as greater part of the Wrexham midfield - But I dont think I'd have necessarily seen him to have the quality to be part of a Midfield with the Championship Play-Offs as a possibility.

I dont like the idea of letting anyone in the starting eleven (Jones / Coventry), or with potential (like Kanu) having the option to run their Contract down and leaving on a free this time next summer - If we've tried to open negotiations over a Contract and they've wanted to wait until Championship Football is confirmed next season then fair enough... We're now at that stage
If someone still doesnt want to come to the table, just going to throw Ramsay out there as a possible example (We just don't know), then I'd prefer we sell them this summer - We need to stop losing any assets on a Free Transfer, thats harking back to the Douchatalet days, instead we need to be able to improve players, sell them on for profit and then put that money back into the team to help with the Financial Rules... We've already lost Small that way

I think Scotland is a good place to source talent.  I think that because the SPL is compared to the Prem there is a sizeable gulf and people may dismiss it.  But a lot of these players are definitely good enough to do well in the Championship from both the SPL and in some instances the Scottish first division

I imagine a fair few contract negotiations have been parked until we were safe, so it's a bit frustrating it's taken a couple more weeks than it should. I'm sure the likes of Ramsay wouldn't sign again if we got relegated, and would look to move on. It'll be interesting what he does, as while he's stepped up, he hasn't really stood out as a "star" player either unlike say Lloyd Jones.

I want Ramsay to sign a new contract, indeed I think it would be the best thing for his career development, but if we got a good fee I wouldn't be upset if he left either.

The one player I slightly worry about is Lloyd Jones. Other clubs could treble his money, especially the parachute clubs, who just want someone to get them promoted, and aren't interested in the long term.
  • It’ll be a test of our pull now. We’re not yet an established Champ team. There is definitely a risk for players coming here that we may be in league one come the end of next season.
That being said we need to be ambitious and if we can get signings over the line that other champ teams are after then that’s a good sign

He was on a free but with a 50% sell on clause to West Ham.

What do we think for a 34 year James Tavernier?

Personally think that would be a decent signing on a free.

I went to PSV vs Utrecht recently - and whilst PSV players would be prem bound, Utrecht are a good example of a mid table Eredivisie club who had some brilliant technical players. They had a couple of midfielders who looked great, a great centre back as well who was solid.

My mind goes back to JBG from AZ... I think the Dutch league is a perfect hunting ground for us.

Right, went into a bit of a deep dive into the Scottish Prem and watched videos on the players we are linked with, and in general some seemingly top players in that league.

I am not being dramatic when I say it will ruin my month, potentially even year, if we don't sign them all
Love this time of year. In about 2 minutes of amateur research I convince myself every player we are linked with is the signing to fire us to the premier league

Plus the occasional weird link that sounds absolutely bizarre (like a Kenyan defender playing in the Slovakian league) that turn out to be completely true.

Even weirder would be a Kenyan playing in the Serbian league!
