except we signed him from Ipswich.... Doesn't really matter he was absolute gash for us!Athletico Charlton said:FishCostaFortune said:
He was 23, scored double figures for a Cambridge side that finished 18th the season before, and has many of the attributes that Jones loves in a footballer (remember they pre-season talk about getting him out of the gym).Chunes said:
I'm fascinated by how we managed to get this one so wrong. It was immediately apparent that he wasn't good enough.Weegie Addick said:I can just about cope with Apter and Tanto as deals that haven’t worked out. I really struggle with Ahadme under contract till 2028 though.
I don't feel like it's that wild of a pick to sign him up at the time. I imagine they thought they might be able to develop him, whilst getting promoted and make a profit when he was sold - but it didn't work out that way and not every signing will.
Thing is he was signed at a time where our scouting seemed to consist of "he played well against us". I am hoping those days are a long way behind us.
Whilst he scored 11 league goals for a poor Cambridge side, two were against our woeful defense and another was a penalty. Of course they all count equally but it was noticable that the Cambridge fans felt we had massively overpaid and were less concerned about losing him than they were about Mannion going at the time which rang massive alarm bells.
He played a total of 6 games for Ipswich the season before he played about 30 for Cambridge. I think the Cambridge fans were massively better placed to comment on him when he signed for us from Ipswich.0 -
Excellent, let's hope so he's a very decent player imho.0

Which makes the link more credible as that’s the reason NJ told the club to sign Ramsaysam3110 said:

He's done that on purpose. Ramsay is well aware of Charlton related social media, reads it all etc.AberystwythAddick said:

There's no doubt in my mind he has done that full well knowing the link, he's a proper wind up merchant.
Most players just comment on eachothers posts, rare they will whack it on their story.9 -
I only check on here occasionally as I'm not expecting much this summer. Everything being said now was said last summer. It's all just words.cabbles said:

Found the piece really interesting, and can see exactly what Jones wants. Let's hope we get it, also in the previous piece his comments about the right ones, so not necessarily getting in targets as early as we might have before.
I hope people can show a little bit of patience and not panic if we don't immediately sign 3 or 4.
Dont know how you think we are going to move on players like Apter & Ahadme. They are on long contracts and probably on better money than a League 1 club would pay. Only way they will leave is if we accept paltry amounts like £50k or £100k......and then the player will want to move !
The Championship is all about Profit & Loss and we will start this season making losses before we even start signing players.2 -

The article linking us to Graham and Ferry said he was at the Dundee derby to watch them both just four days ago.Scoham said:
Not recently but in the fan meeting earlier this year they mentioned he’d been in Turkey and Japan.sm said:Any sightings of Phil Chapple recently. Difficult to believe that the reach of Brighton's former head of European recruitment was just confined to Serbia.

I don't think it was particularly savvy of Jones to dismiss League 1 signings.
First of all, you look at that current top6, and there is a decent percentage of players who were only recently playing in League 1 in those squads. Our player of the year was League 1 till this season, our runner up, and our 3rd place. There is moves to be made in that league. Our two top scorers were League 1.
Secondly, it now sets an expectation of players who are proven Championship players, or marquee signings from abroad. It also implies we will be competing with upper Championship wages, as that's really the only way we can compete with the clubs who currently sit above us for proven quality in this league.
I'd have just let the window do the talking. Expectations will be high now and rightly so after that comment imo.1 -
But I also get where he's coming from. Him and PC probably know the type of fee that someone like say a Laurent Tolaj would command and if they've looked at things and gone " hang on why would we spend X for someone from League 1 when we can spend Y and get someone from Scotland/Europe of a similar profile"Braziliance said:I don't think it was particularly savvy of Jones to dismiss League 1 signings.

As much as I agree it wasn’t the smartest thing to do although I don’t believe there’s a huge amount of talent at L1 level this year outside of Tolaj, Collins, Pye, Clearly and Ballard.Braziliance said:I don't think it was particularly savvy of Jones to dismiss League 1 signings.

Coventry are prepared to break their transfer record to sign Sorba Thomas from Stoke City … sort of winger we need.

I get what you mean. And if it all goes tits up and we miss out on our targets, we could end up signing League One players again and he might have egg on his face.Braziliance said:I don't think it was particularly savvy of Jones to dismiss League 1 signings.

Re: An expectation of proven Champ players, he did also say we can't go for established Championship players because we can't compete on wages. He said he wants pace and power, and those kinds of players are expensive.I would imagine that if there were a player from L1 that they fancied, they would go for it. But they're not looking for 'projects' this season, which is fair enough. We've got plenty of those, what we need is a big injection of quality.3 -
Sorba Thomas who we could have signed from Boreham Wood if we'd managed to agree a fee.RonnieMoore said:Coventry are prepared to break their transfer record to sign Sorba Thomas from Stoke City … sort of winger we need.
We've got to go and find the next Sorba Thomas from Non League because we sure as hell haven't got the budget for ready-made championship wingers with his kind of production.8 -
22m for Sorba Thomas is absolutely mental. Decent championship player but 20 mill?!?! He’s not even young and has had one good season.25

Quite amusing that a certain troll suggested that he was someone we should be looking at this summerCovered_End_Lad said:22m for Sorba Thomas is absolutely mental. Decent championship player but 20 mill?!?! He’s not even young and has had one good season.1 -
He has been averaging close to 10 assists a season in the championship over 4 seasons. Clearly not a one year wonder. This is is the first year where he has added scoring but that might be due in part he previously played as a traditional winger and he is playing more as a wide forward this year. 20 million might be inflated but he is probably the best wide player in the championship right nowCovered_End_Lad said:22m for Sorba Thomas is absolutely mental. Stoke have been a one man team this season, he's really carried an ordinary side.3
-
But Ronnie said we have £20m to spend this summer, maybe he wants us to spend it all on Sorba Thomas (and of course sell TC).ForeverAddickted said:

De Keersmaker and Ingleson are now league 1 players. I'd be happy with either of them.1

On my knees for De Keersmaecker wouldn’t want Inglesson exact same profile as what we have in midfield need players who can actually play with the ballAddicksi said:De Keersmaker and Ingleson are now league 1 players. I'd be happy with either of them.0 -

If we sign the Oxford midfielder, can we agree on here to just call him BrianCrispywood said:

Just chucking a couple of names out there randomly and pointlessly. 😀.
I know NJ has said no more L1 projects but Jenson Metcalfe at Bradford looks full of promise and their fans have likened him to a young Josh Cullen.
I still think Max Dean will be an excellent Championship level striker.2 -
I think we'll see Lloyd Jones depart, he's been superb so there won't be a lack of interest, and he's at the age now where a two or three year contract on bigger money will change his career earnings dramatically. Although I wouldn't sell for less than £4m.3
-
Tbf on Lloyd he has been brilliant for us and if he gets the chance for a decent payday at the back end of his career then good luck to himLittleAddick said:I think we'll see Lloyd Jones depart, he's been superb so there won't be a lack of interest, and he's at the age now where a two or three year contract on bigger money will change his career earnings dramatically.
