POST-MATCH THREAD: Swansea City v Charlton Athletic: Saturday 2nd May 2026: KO 12:30
The Addicks headed into the last day of the season with a carefree and footloose trip to Swansea, safe in the knowledge that the work of surviving in the Championship is done. Tidy. All that was left was to finish strong for the manager, a man that the Swansea supporters particularly love to hate. Crackin.
Nathan Jones made a few changes to the side that started the last outing, with Conor Coventry and Lyndon Dykes coming into the starting eleven, alongside Captain-for-the-day, Conor Coady (perhaps a fair well gesture). After a star performance against Hull, Jayden Fevrier kept his place, starting on the right.
Charlton started brightly but it was Swansea who put the ball in the net first. Fortunately for the visitors, the goal scorer was ruled offside. The ease with which Swansea cut through the centre of the Charlton defence was a cause for concern. Minutes later, Swansea punted the ball forward, finding a winger in acres of space to play the ball into the centre. Vipotnik, the league’s top scorer, had his shot parried away but Harry Clarke came mere centimeters away from turning it into his own net. Instead, he turned it out for a corner. Swansea were finding space with ease, happy to be patient in possession, probing for weaknesses they were finding all over.
Charlton’s first decent chance came just after 27 minutes had elapsed. A long throw from Clarke caused danger to the home side. The ball pinged about a bit in the box before Dyke’s header into the centre almost found Harvey Knibbs right in front of goal but he couldn’t turn it in on account of being a yard too close. Harry Clarke’s attempt to get on the end of the rebound resulted in a shot that was blocked away. The ball was recycled to the edge of the box and passed around a bit before Jayden Fevrier took possession, pushed further in and tried to curl one in at the back post. The shot was deflected and easily claimed by the keeper.
Swansea had the bulk of possession and opportunities to see out the half. They probed and prodded largely at will. Fortunately, none of their chances were particularly dangerous, though the Addicks did their best to accommodate the home side through their inability to do much more than clear the ball and reset lines. Jayden Fevrier had a chance though, with a shot from the edge of box that was reminiscent of the one that went in against Hull, but it was gathered relatively comfortably. the half finished without a goal for wither side.
The second half started the way the previous half ended. Swansea pressed forward at will, forcing a save from Thomas Kaminski within the first couple of minutes of the restart. Then, not long after, a poor back pass from Conor Coventry handed the home side an opportunity that was headed away by Lloyd Jones. A couple of corners later, a decent chance came from a headed in the box. Kaminski once again made the save but Swansea were in full control.
With almost 60 minutes having elapsed, Nathan Jones made three changes. Fresh legs in the form of Joe Rankin-Costello, Sonny Carey, and Miles Leaburn, came on for Jayden Fevrier, Reece Burke, and Conor Coady. A switch to a midfield diamond, with Leaburn partnering Dykes up top. The subs made an immediate impact with Rankin-Costello and Leaburn forcing a corner on the counter attack. Luke Chambers found Miles Leaburn in the box but his header was skewed well wide. Chambers and Dykes then combined but Dykes was taken out on the edge of the box, centre on to the goal. Gillesphey and Carey combined on the resulting free kick but Carey’s shot failed to test the keeper.
The subs and the change in formation were proving effective. Despite that, it was Swansea that opened the scoring after a long period of pressure where the Addicks were forced to drop deep. When the ball was shifted over to the Swansea right the attacking side was in plenty of space to play an incisive ball through the centre and the resulting shot through traffic easily found the back of the net to hand the home side the lead.
Luke Berry replaced Conor Coady, then Charlie Kelman replaced Lyndon Dykes on about 77 minutes. His first touch came only seconds in when he played a dangerous cross through the six yard box. Charlton piled on a bit of pressure and the equaliser came through a corner that found MIles Leaburn with space to head in from a few yards.
It wasn’t long before Swansea were back in front. Harry Clarke and Luke Berry played themselves into trouble trying to engineer a slow-motion counter attack and Swansea broke in numbers on a counter of their own. The ball was knocked in by the earlier goal scorer, who looked well pleased with himself as one would expect. The 2000+ Charlton supporters had been singing “You’re not singing anymore” when the equaliser went in and it was only minutes later that the song was turned back on them. Miles Leaburn, who had been thoroughly effective in making an impact, had a chance to dig the Addicks out again but his effort ultimately came to nothing.
Near the 88th minute Conor Coventry was caught out through some nifty footwork in front of goal, some twenty yards out. A free kick on the edge of the box was deftly struck, finding the back of the net off the inside of Kaminski’s left post, the keeper rooted to his spot.
Truth be told, Swansea were good for their 3-1 win. They were much better today then when the two sides met earlier in the season at the Valley. After a long, difficult season at this level, Charlton were found lacking on the final day against decent, mid-table opposition. Disappointing but ultimately it doesn’t matter. We’re here and staying here, so what is important now is to look forward at the chance to build on this season’s accomplishments. Well done to the travelling Addicks; unfortunate result but we live to go again (next season).
Swansea 3 Charlton 1
Over to you.

We stayed up, lots to do it the summer but can't do anything but be happy we survived year 1.31

let's all laugh at Wrexham

Nathan Jones ball. Really funny when it works. Absolutely diabolical when it doesn’t.

If more than 50% of that squad are in the squad for the first game of the season, we are in big trouble29
-
If somebody had offered 19th at the start of the season we would have bit their hand off.
Job well done but a very very busy summer ahead. Huge transfer window starts now36 -
Always going to be a difficult game to watch with nothing to play forBut equally quite relaxing at the same time, especially with Millwall never really in with a shot of getting 2nd todayThanks to the loan signings and the help they've given us, and so ensuring Championship survivalEnjoy the summer everyone..16

Tough end to a brutal season. Objective achieved and now time for some serious work over summer to improve us.1

Same old shit. I hope that some of these players is the last time I see the likes of Dykes, Clarke etc2
-
Shit and pointless.
No minutes for the youngsters is ridiculous.Leaburn was good.7 -
I don't understand why we'd play loan players in a meaningless game on the last day of the season.13

The fact that Hull made the playoffs gives me hope…thought they were poor last week23

A poor first half our undoing again1

Please we enjoyed the euphoria of this time last week and a successful season based solely on the main objective we are still here come August.
In a weird way it may be a positive to get today's performance and result because after last week's heroics it's underlined how much work is required between now and August throughout every position to ensure we're pushing on next year.
As much as i don't have time for Wrexham's Disney antics would have liked them out of the league next year as they'll buy a lot of quality now and really be far tougher.
Well done Charlton a great overall result but lots of work to capitalise on it with a huge squad rebuild if we want to push on to the point that relegation isn't a consideration next season.5 -
Really awful performance, especially first half.
But...
- no one cares because we're already safe
- Leaburn and Carey both were quality when they came on
- Millwall missed autos
- Wrexham bottled playoffs
I will take it18 -
We had some decent moments, but we lacked the quality to make it count.
Clarke has really been costing us recently. Don't know how he's gone so far off the boil.
Leaburn was immense when he came on. Showed he can do it.
Dykes has been at the World Cup for a month. His lack of tracking for their second has ultimately cost us the game. I watched him see their player, notice the danger, and decide not to shut it down.
Thought Coventry actually looked better in that position, but his passing is not at this level. And that's hopefully the last we see of NJ's Luke Berry obsession.
I do hope we're not that hopeless on the ball next season. Wholesale changes needed in midfield. If Cov/Doch are playing another 30+ games next season, we're not progressing.
Job done. Big summer. Hope to be watching a very different team next season.7 -
Most important part of today is that we are staying up.
Second most important is the women's team.
Beyond that, watching Leabrun and Kelman buzzing around for the last 15 gives me some hope for next season. Both looked very bright, but I think both need to show they can do it consistently, especially from the start.
We went attacking in the second half and got opened up. You see how fine the margins of risk and reward are in this league. We also don't have the quality and athleticism in midfield for a diamond. That needs to change in the summer (the quality and athleticism, not a switch to a diamond which I highly doubt we'll do).
I've said it all along, but this season was hard on the old hearts. But we got it done and over the line. That's all that counts.
Up the Addicks. Come on you Reds. Happy summer everyone, looking forward to your company for the World Cup!6 -
Successful season. Shame it didn’t finish on the Hull euphoria, particularly as I work with a few Swans fans who are generally smug, but…job done.
Big decisions needed about the squad now.
Coventry looked so out of his depth today. A shame but he and others should be thanked and moved on.A busy summer looms.
First job…burn that third kit.

I guess context is needed but that’s our highest finish in 11 years and yet many seem negative. Think we did what we needed to do this season and arguably better than we should have done18
-
I would be delighted if only Lloyd Jones from today’s starting line up plays in our first game next season.Mission accomplished now let’s have a proper summer of activity, release 10 of the deadwood and bring in some quality
Beaten by a better established Championship side today and that’s the aim for us5 -

Looking forward to next season is all I can say, this year we achieved our target, but it's been dire at times, today we were in it...just when Leaburn equalised, but we need such a shake up in the close season that's obvious...
Have a great summer everyone, and we go again in the Championship August...COYRRFSR...1 -
How do you work that one out? It was 0-0 at half time!panther10 said:A poor first half our undoing again14 -
The subs from Jones were very attacking. He clearly wanted to win at Swansea but with that we lost our structure and shape. The scoreline is harsh but the aim of the season has been achieved. A big summer ahead....2
-
For an hour, we've been quite comfortable, not creating very much but looking reasonably solid.
Then Jones treats us to one of his tactical masterclasses by making a triple situation, taking Burke and Coady off and having 2 lumps up front. Not sure if he was trying to make it more entertaining but it certainly turned out that way as Swansea ran through us with ease. I know it doesn't really matter but I just don't get it.
Swansea finish in 11th, only 8 places above us. But the way they play football means there is an actual chasm between the 2 teams. This team needs some serious reinforcements to get anywhere near the level of Swansea.5 -
Painful to watch. Job done last week but please get some players in who know how to hold on to the ball now! 🙏4

He means we should've won the first half 4-0, then it'd have finished 4-3Callumcafc said:

Seems such a wasted opportunity to try things like Kelman and Leaburn up top together, looked really good for the last 5-10 mins but why couldn’t we have done that for the first 60-70 mins?13

Idah 6 goals this season, 3 against us ffs!!, he wants to play us every week . Anyway bit of a damp squib of a finish, thanks to the loan players for they’re efforts, let’s hope for a really interesting off season with signings, we need a bit of a shake up as it’s going to be tougher next season.4
