Sonny Carey is worth money in this league and I think has a high ceiling to where he can go. I'd rather we didn't sell him but accept our place in the food chain
Challenge as always is replacing what you lose and with Carey its a lot. Midfield goals, decent set piece delivery and a fairly long throw as well as a really good fuel tank and desire to be involved19 -
This is kind of how the model works in The Championship, we may not like it but ultimately it's what Millwall have done well they've cashed in on players, scouted well, signed a good replacement, banked some cash and made a profit on the sale.Siv_in_Norfolk said:Word on the grapevine up here is that there have been a few offers for Carey and it's possible he'll leave this summer
Question is how much is enough for Carey to go for, maybe £5m? and who do we replace him with, is DKD the replacement if the link is true?4 -
I assume that DKD post is just a joke about us signing Coady rather than anything more6
-
Agree this will eventually be our model. Not sure it needs to be our model right now. I mean obviously every player has a price, but I'm not sure clubs would pay enough for Carey that we would be able to replace his contributions over the course of a season. He's also still quite young and English, which drives that cost up just a bit more. I would hope we hold on for now, and if he has another strong season (even if it doesn't include as many goals) look to cash in next summer. It's not just about selling, it's about selling at the right time (which, admittedly, is sometimes sooner than one might like).MartinCAFC said:

If say Norwich came calling for Carey with a chunky offer I don't think we'd be able to turn it down. Replacing him would be a bit tricky but we've got Knibbs who we haven't seen loads of.3

Carey took 92 shots this season, the most at the club by some distance (TC second with 63).So yes he scored a decent number of goals but our entire team was built around setting him up for strikes (sitting on the edge of the box at corners etc.).
He’s a good player and offers something no one else at the club does, but I’d be disappointed if he was our #1 shot taker next season too.
Outputs (goals scored) were high (top 9%) because the inputs (shots taken) were high (top 6%).

I think if Carey was to go we’d get a much better offer than what he would actually be worth. Output is always going to be valued more than what the player actually contributes for the rest of the game.Clubs will see the 8 goals and think if he can get that for a poor side he can manage 10-15 in a good side that’s worth a few pounds completely oblivious to how the whole system was set up to get Carey scoring from 2nd balls and box crashing6

The sad truth is that with how little you're allowed to lose and our commercial performance we have to seriously consider offers for players like Carey. I'd love to see him stay but if the offer is a few million that is a tasy profit that can't be sniffed at5
-
When Nathan Jones said he was going to be ruthless, what he meant was ruthless with the fans. He hasn't forgotten Bristol Rovers away or Crawley at home you know, so he has decided to put the fans in their place by giving Lloyd Jones a free transfer, and building the team next season around Gassan Ahadme.
That'll learn us.16 -
Carey is a player who looks better to outsiders than he really is. They see a midfielder scoring 8 goals, which seems a great return. I see a midfielder who does F-all in midfield, which, alongside the mediocrity of Coventry and Docherty, gave us probably the worst midfield in the division and nearly got us relegated. One skill midfielders most need is the ability to pass the ball. Our three heroes are all clueless at it.
Someone will pay 3 million for him. We should be able to get a lot better for that money.15 -
Agree we'd have to take a good offer if it came in but hope we keep him. One of the few players other than TC who carries the ball forward, also one of the few not afraid to shoot (often to a fault, but also often resulting in a goal).
Passing and vision clearly his weak points but NJ was clear they have been working on that and I thought there were some positive signs towards the end of the season. Earlier he would literally run head down into a defender, by the end he always got his head up and picked some decent passes - thought he had a few good ones in his appearance at Swansea. Think he can be very effective and is only getting better.3 -

If we sell Carey I imagine it’s because we’ve had a very big offer. Selling for £2-3m wouldn’t make sense - we’d likely have to spend that to replace him and there’s no guarantee we’d get an equally good or better player, or one that settles in as quickly as he did.
Being a goalscorer we shouldn’t let him go cheaply, and the fact we signed him on a free shouldn’t change that either.

I think ruthless is basically what advice Curbs offers. Don't be too loyal. In terms of Carey, it is ridiculous that we can improve on him so easily and indeed not ridiculous that he can improve more. Ramsey will be keeping his head down as he will most likely have been tapped up by a club offering big wages, a bit like Small was. I think the key to our business is abroad. Collins an example of the type of player we can aquire.1

I would agree, he’s a midfield passenger that scores goalswolfgang said:Carey is a player who looks better to outsiders than he really is. I can’t believe some of these comments on Carey. You lot must live in dreamland if you think we easily get somebody else in who’s better. Particularly for “3 million”.37

Woke up to our top scorer being digged out and sold for 3 million, granted he went off the boil but surely he's worth having around even if we progress as a team ? Rather than sell for peanuts in this division and have to replace with another gamble. How about upgrade on him and have him as back up or get a promising understudy and strengthen the real weak areas first the centre of midfield for example.5

Well to be fair we brought in an identical player from Blackpool last summer for free.cafc_se7 said:I can’t believe some of these comments on Carey. You lot must live in dreamland if you think we easily get somebody else in who’s better. Particularly for “3 million”.

Yes he had loads of shots but for a lot of them he should have passed to someone in a better position.Callumcafc said:Carey took 92 shots this season, the most at the club by some distance (TC second with 63).So yes he scored a decent number of goals but our entire team was built around setting him up for strikes (sitting on the edge of the box at corners etc.).

Absolutely no guarantee 3M would get us a better midfield. Does he offer much outside goalscoring and driving with the ball not really, but those traits still made him our top scorer, which can’t be understated because otherwise we would be relegated.wolfgang said:Carey is a player who looks better to outsiders than he really is. Someone will pay 3 million for him. We should be able to get a lot better for that money.Besides Ramsay, Sichenje, Edwards, Lloyd Jones, Bell, Godden and Leaburn (although he’s not exceptional at anything in particular), every single one of our players are mostly one trick ponies and lack a lot from their overall game1 -
Genuinely can't believe some people want rid of Carey.
Our top goal scorer who had a dip in form that coincided with us stopping scoring, and suddenly we can do loads better because we stayed up.
If we build a better team in the summer he'll thrive again I reckon. No one in our team could drive forward and strike a ball like he did. But yea lets sell him.
Crazy

I noted at Swansea that Ramsey was the last player on the pitch clapping and waving to the fans after the game.. even though he hadn't played any part in it. Surprised no one has mentioned it (that I have seen anyway). Previous years we have had full summers discussing what that might mean.2

It’ll be an interesting one, we are going to have to enter a playing trading model to ensure we have money coming in to build squads. Other teams in the champ have been very successful at this.At the moment we don’t really have anyone worth a huge amount with Carey probably being up there as one who could bring in the largest fee.The big if is if we were to get a decent return on him as a free transfer, would we be able to reinvest that into the next Carey or better?I wouldn’t want him to leave as he’s done exceptionally well for us given pre season expectations. But I could understand if a deal was done.0
