When I ran it this year I got in through the charity ballot (LDN Marathons own Charity), this is the better chance X2 but costs £50 up front.

If you don’t get in you get a free running top worth what you paid. If you do get in then nothing to pay so you get to run it about £25-30 cheaper.

This year for 2027 race it is a running vest apparently worth over £100.

Another good way of getting in is to join a running club that is affiliated to England Athletics, each club usually gets awarded one place depending on the number of members. (More members = more places)
Last year in 2025 only 3 runners in my club wanted to run it out of about 40 ish members.

I went into the hat with a 1 in 3 chance of doing London Marathon, that is a far better route and worth considering if you have a local affiliate club.

Congratulations on getting a place @sholland

running clubs with 40-189 members get 1 London place. I’m amazed so few of your club entered!

Personally, it’s not for me as just don’t have the time needed in joining a running club, but i think they’re great.

Tokyo marathon have do a novel thing. You can enter the ballot and take your chances like everyone else. Or you can pay a fee and if you’re unsuccessful three years on the bounce, you then get a place automatically for the fourth year .

I often look back now and wonder how I had so much time to join a running club... Then I remember I have kids now.

    Thanks AFKABartram
Members that have run it before often allow others who have never run it get a chance, not everyone is marathon standard and some only run as far as 5 or 10k

The club only meets once a week on a Thursday night, I miss many sessions as I work mainly night shifts for NHS. It doesn’t necessarily mean it is time consuming joining a club.

Hopefully if it is 2 a day event next year the odds go from 1 in 67 chance to 1 in 13 which is far better.

London used to do something similar in the 90s early 2000s.

When I ran it, in ‘86, it was all done by post, it was my first attempt at applying, also applied the next year & got in, didn’t run and returned my place early on, as I couldn’t be bothered to do the training again, as I found it ruined my sprinting in both GAA and football, as I got use to running at one pace.

FTD brothers. When they reach dublin, the country is literally going to come to a halt to join them. One of the most inspiring things I’ve ever seen and love taking a peak at their Garmin track throughout the day.

These are the two lads that have a dementia gene that means they’re unlikely to make it past 40. One of them ran London with a fridge on his back and they’re now running a marathon in all 32 counties in Ireland, in consecutive days. It’s day 12 today I think. I’ve been following it on Instagram and it’s growing by the day.

Here you go... watched the fridge carrying fella on Tower Bridge being interviewed during the marathon and he was getting poper choked up.  At that point I had some grit fly into my eye.
