Andy Salako

I am nearing the end of volume 3 of 'The Valiant 1000' and I'm faced with a small group of players who appeared briefly at first team level but about whom detailed information is scarce.

Andy Salako is John's younger brother. He came to Charlton during the 80s and made one league appearance away at Plymouth in May 1991, plus three cup matches later the same year.

Freed by Charlton, he turned out for Welling, Bromley, Carshalton, Sutton, Bishop's Stortford and Horsham before disappearing from sight. I believe that the family lived in Westerham and both brothers played cricket for Westerham CC. Does anyone know what happened to him or have any contact details for him or any info that will add to my limited knowledge? Any help gratefully acknowledged as always.

I can confirm he posted for Westerham CC. I'm afraid I can't offer any more help in your quest though.

I reckon it's this guy, mate.

Went to Wilderness School in Sevenoaks (Wilderness is a secondary school) in the late 80's (Westerham would be in the catchment area for Wilderness). Then nothing for 6 years. Accountancy Degree in the mid 90's. John Salako also went to Wilderness.

First employment is listed as 2009. So basically he left school in '89 and didn't start working for 20 years. That ties in with having a football career in the intervening period.

Currently working in Canterbury, which, whilst not next door to Westerham, is close enough that you could easily imagine someone from the vicinity of Westerham moving to or working there.

Sent two PMs but Mr Largo may well have done the job.
  • He was dating a woman i knew in the late 90s who lived in NW Kent. When I found out who she was dating she was perplexed by my first question, “What, not the Andy Salako surely?”.

Went to wilderness school for a bit, dump, now no more and bulldozed down to make way for two new schools. I remember John Salako being one of the most celebrated person to come out of that school. Apart from me of course..

I worked in Westerham in the late 90's. Pretty sure John Salako's brother was the local postman back then.

I understand that there is another Salako brother called Paul, a decent goalkeeper but never a pro footballer. Maybe he was the Westerham postman.

We didn't hate him in January 2001 when he got the late equaliser against Dagenham which kept us in the FA Cup.

Did he also score against the nigels at home in 99/00 or is my mind playing tricks on me?

Yes, he got the first goal when we beat them 2-1 on Boxing Day 1999. Martin Pringle hit the winner. Happy days!!

I knew another brother Dave briefly when they were definitely living in Westerham and he went to Tunbridge Wells Tech as it was then. I think there was a sister too
