Surely the question is would either of them take us? Bree has not looked out of place in the revived Southampton side, there'll be plenty of interest.DamoNorthStand said:Bedsaddick said:I’d still take Clarke over Bree
I would take both of them. We need two options for RWB and they both offer something different.
Clarke is maybe going to be more achievable but his wage demands are going to be an issue, he'll have to take a cut to play here permanently.4 -
Still need Ipswich to release their retained list but if he’s going on a free and don’t trigger the option it would be silly to not have a look at him rather than spending millions.raytreacy said:
No to Clarke he makes too many mistakes.Bedsaddick said:I’d still take Clarke over BreeHis throw ins alone must be worth a pretty penny.Bree isn’t even worth talking about no chance he’s coming back here5 -

"This block from James Bree yesterday
It's absolutely mad how they* sent him out on loan to Charlton at the start of the season. Crazy decision."*had Will Still as manager at mentioned time period. What can I say his trash was our gain. 🤷♂️

Clarke’s better with his hands than his feet. We should be targeting betterCrispywood said:

Could do a job in goal better , probably than our current two and more versatileWatameire said:

There was no mention of James Bree, who is expected to sign a new deal.

Signed a 3 year deal.3

Oh well good luck to him,not really one that got away imo as we would have had to pay out the ass for him in wages i'd expect to match them.killerandflash said:Signed a 3 year deal.2 -
It shows what a bizarre decision it was by Still to loan him out in the first place, and how lucky we were to pick him up, thank to the NJ connection.15

And some of you were saying he wasn’t good enough for us….3

Doesn’t change for me our need for pace at wing back on both sides. Believe he’s mainly played RB for them, where he’s better suited.AberystwythAddick said:And some of you were saying he wasn’t good enough for us….
Not saying he wouldn’t have been a good signing, but Bree or Clarke and Edwards or similar as our two first choice wing backs shouldn’t be what we’re aiming for.
I can see us struggling if they’re the type of wing backs we end up with on both sides.5 -
Bree got 4 goals and 5 assists last season, those are the stats of a full back who'd good going forward, and very capable of playing at wing back.Scoham said:

I wasn’t suggesting he doesn’t offer something going forward, but pace and taking players on aren’t his strengths. We lack it across the squad in general and wing back on both sides is a position where it makes sense to add it.killerandflash said:

It was also the only season of his career where he’s scored more than one league goal. No doubt he’d get assists as he has a good cross and set piece when he’s on form, but he’s not someone we could have relied on to regularly be a goal threat.1 -
And this is exactly the problem for some people, rightly or wrongly people care more about being entertained than what is effective or what the situation requires.Scoham said:

If Jones cares about his wingbacks having pace or wants that option absolutely it’s a must but if it’s about being solid and being able to put in a delivery that’s perfectly acceptable as well. The players we should be going for is what Jones deems the most appropriate not what gives us the best viewing because end of the day our main priority is win.0 -
A very disrespectful post. Scoham, an extremely well respected poster, is absolutely not saying what you imply re entertainment over results.Crispywood said:

Pretty sure most people respect his posts, which are without fail, well thought out and mostly on point.7 -
That’s a big assumption based on me only mentioning a need for pace. I care far more about us winning than entertainment. I’m not asking for playmakers, tricky wingers or a more exciting or possession style of play.Crispywood said:

This is purely about the balance of our team, based on watching us under Jones and our successful vs unsuccessful teams in the past.
We went on our promotion winning run after we put Small at RWB and TC drifted to the left. Jones tried solid teams this season but always came back to playing TC, who get plenty of minutes despite his lack of goals and assists (not all his fault on the latter, he did create chances for others).
We won’t progress in the Championship without that getting that balance right. Eleven solid players will grind out some results, but those type of teams tend to get pinned back, put under a lot of pressure defensively and struggle to create enough chances. It’s not a sustainable way to play across a whole season.

I rate Bree and yet I also kind of agree with this. I think Clarke had more pace, but lacked Bree's quality in the final third.Scoham said:

Bree started well and then faded badly . He evidently did well at Southampton in a much better side . I’m not disappointed he’s not coming back .SDAddick said:

Don't worry Scoham, most of us appreciate that you're as good as it gets when analysing the Charlton team.10

Clarke was part of the Ipswich side which went up a couple of seasons ago. His throw ins have been very productive. Absolute madness not to try to get him if it is possible.1
