Anyone else need a break from football after a season of Nathan Jones ball.

Cullen???Gisappointed said:We cant ignore the fact that £3m Apter barely got a start on loan to a lower division. Ditto Olaofe, and Ahadme although he was injured.
JRC, Knibbs, Burke, Gillesphey were invisible and Kaminsky/Cullen/Dykes/Berry/Doc failed to earn their big wages. Neither loanee WB earned a contract offer.
That is a lot of our squad on the scrapheap, without digging out our kids and free transfers.6 -
It’s good to have a break. The football was tough to watch at times, but overall it was a fantastic season. Staying up was imperative. The break gives the players the chance to recover, and I always look forward to the run up to the new season. Who we bring in, the fixture list being announced
plus this year we’ve built on the success of promotion and kicked on again. There’s lots to be excited about. Hopefully the window adds to that, because I do worry a bit about the rebuild needed given how tight it was at the end of the season.3 -
Yes, in that our starting eleven has 110 toes, 22 eyebrows and 11 arseholes. That is literally where the similarity ends.RaplhMilne said:I struggle with the fact that so many of us feel that the target, and success was 4th from bottom. If Nathan had been interviewed for the role at start of last season as a new manager, and said my aim is to finish 4th from bottom. I have no doubt he wouldn’t have got the job. Leicester, won the Premier with a squad that equated to ours of last season. I’m not saying I expect to win the Leauge, but was very disappointed with the way we fell away, and the matches were largely lacking entertainment. It wasn’t a great watch. However, we get another season in championship, but god I hope it’s better to watch than this one was.1 -
And I can't work this bloody quote thing!3

Thoroughly agree. Not just a break but a new club if I get any enthusiasm back. Been trying to find out if I've got any kind of connection to other clubs through family heritage or other means and drawing a blank so far. Have a fancy for emigrating somewhere exotic and becoming a terrace legend with a mysterious past. Pork pie did that didn't he?aki2798 said:I’ve done the maths and I went to 29 Charlton games in 25/26. Though I’m no football purist Nathan jones ball was an incredibly tough watch, and it’s the first time after I’ve felt I’ve need a break from football. Not even that excited for the World Cup…

I’m pleased to have a break and the players certainly need to recharge after a fairly gruelling season. It was a hard watch at times but there were also some great moments and we managed to stay up, which is ultimately all that matters. It was never going to be easy coming up through the play-offs, with big-spending Wrexham and Birmingham taking the two automatic promotion slots. The Championship is also a different proposition now than it was even 5 years ago.
Unlike last summer, we’ll have a full three and a half month break from our final league game at Swansea on 2 May until our first Championship game on the weekend of 15 August. I’ll be dying to see a game by then and will also probably take in a pre-season friendly, maybe the game at Dartford on 3 July. I appreciate that these games are really glorified training exercises but they’re a chance for a pleasant and relaxing few beers and a chance to see a couple of new players and youngsters treading the boards.
At present, I’m extremely luke warm about the World Cup, given the geopolitical climate in the USA and the disgraceful behaviour of FIFA and their shameless lickspittle in chief, Gianni Infantino. The ridiculous pricing of games and the exploitation of supporters by transport providers and others is appalling. There are also going to be quarterly breaks in every match, regardless of climatic conditions, ostensibly for player welfare (clearly required at many venues), but I have no doubt that they’re designed to enhance the value of TV rights and advertising revenue. ITV introduced some split screen advertising during the Six Nations recently and reducing every game in the World Cup to a quarterly affair is another reason to avoid watching ITV wherever possible. FIFA’s latest brainchild feels very much like the thin end of the wedge. How long until this is introduced into other competitions?I expect I’ll muster some enthusiasm for the World Cup once the tournament starts but its bloated nature with 48 teams is bound to lead to a lot of poor quality, low energy matches, especially during the group stages. Allowing 8 third placed teams to proceed from the 12 groups feels like an unnecessary complication, although obviously Gianni needs 32 qualifiers for his expanded knock out stage.
It will be interesting to see what sort of crowds some of these games command.3 -
We had highlights during the season. The start in general, The late winner against Watford, beating Ipswich 3-0 away and I think we were the only team to win at Portman Road, the Blackburn home game where we played like Champions. Even the Hull game where we scored two brilliant goals in the sunshine. Jones ball is justified by its results and success this season was always going to be staying up. Of course we want to develop beyond that but you have to do it in steps. We had the budget to get relegated and we didn't.6

My thoughts exactly. NJ and the squad overall did so well to stay up. Mid table finish next season please.MuttleyCAFC said:We had highlights during the season. Would I prefer us to play shit football and be a championship club or back in league 1 by trying to outplay teams with £20m players? Championship all day.9

I'm personally really disappointed about how we stayed up, and would've preferred to have been relegated in style.Danny Addick said:Would I prefer us to play shit football and be a championship club or back in league 1 by trying to outplay teams with £20m players? Championship all day.
I want away fans saying "Charlton played some good football didn't they" as they leave the Valley having beat us 3-1, rather than grinding out 1-0 wins that get us 3 ugly points.
Jones keeping us in the division the way he did is the worst thing that has happened to us in a long time. He has to be shown the door17 -

I’ll be disappointed if we don’t look easier on the eye next season than this but until we are able to establish ourselves as a Championship club I’ll take whatever is necessary to secure that.7

At the moment, not bothered about the WC, mainly because it’s mostly in the US. That may change.Callumcafc said:Can’t wait for the World Cup, and for next season. Bring it on already.
Looking forward to our new signings and the new season.0 -
I'm not buying this narrativd that NJ can only play one style of football.
In two seasons he has got us promotion and stayed up. The squad still needs a LOT of work to be competitive in this league. I'll pass judgement on him after two more transfer windows. Until then, he has more than done what's expected of him.4 -

Well, there's a lot to unpack in this question:
- Am I glad there's a break? Yes. To be honest, I'm always glad there's a break. When the league starts up again at the end of summer it always feels fresh and new. I think if it was a relentless twelve months of football it would get very tedious. You need that beak for any successes to be meaningful, and for any disappointments to be overcome.
- Nathan Jones Ball? Well it's not always been easy on the eye, and I hope that in coming seasons we can move to something more entertaining but it served a purpose and on some occasions the defensive style of football was highly entertaining. I'm thinking of Middlesborough, where we took three points by defending like demons and taking our one chance. No Charlton fan could possibly think it wasn't fun. I'm very pleased though, that Gavin Carter recently spoke of the need for more goals and a more attacking midfield.
- Attitude to dissenting views? It never ceases to amaze me, how intolerant some on here are of anyone who disagrees with their view. In this case, the prevailing view that all that mattered this season was staying up. Some of us have a genuine desire to be entertained - there's nothing at all wrong with that. It is quite possible to be pleased that we stayed up, to understand the necessity for a largely defensive style of play but also to have felt bored by some of our play and hopeful that it will be better in the future.
- World Cup? For the first time ever, we are less than a month away and still I have no enthusiasm for it. That may be for personal reasons (now I'm retired I no longer run the office sweepstake) but I think it's more for FIFA's mismanagement of it: Three host countries is too many; 48 teams is far too many; 25 minute half-times, no thanks, and don't get me started on the ridiculous Fifa Peace Prize. Once again Infantino and his cohorts are just interested in lining their own pockets. It stinks! That said, I'll probably get sucked in when it kicks off.

The Goals of the season list were some of the best we have scored in many a year. So we can pass and strike the ball on occasions !
We now need to evolve because we were found out the longer the season went on and the Hull game was an outlier as both Kelman and Fevrier got the ball passed to their feet and they finished with aplomb.
...................
I will no doubt become a World Cup junkie when it starts but the thought of 105 minutes minimum with the water breaks, subs, time wasting, VAR will see me missing some matches to watch Cricket, tennis etc as I'm not a one trick sports Pony; I'm more of a stallion.

I didn't get to any games last season owing to health issues, so only saw our live games and highlights on TV
I didn't expect too much 'pretty' football as I knew it would be a struggle to stay up and the situation would dictate the way we played.
Even so, at times we played some decent stuff, though as the season progressed and the pressure increased we thankfully played to our defensive strength, i.e. belt the ball as far away from our goal as possible and then fight like feck to prevent being scored against.
It worked. Natan's way was not a pretty way, and I hope that we play with a bit more style next season.
As ever, we will see
I'm old school. Sooner survival by boring the fans, pundits and opposition into a coma, than relegation playing pitter patter, mistake ridden football2 -
Given that we had the lowest budget in the league, what on earth did anyone expect?5
-
I expect the first round of games in the WC to not generate much interest and be viewed more like friendlies. Maybe there will be a shock or two. What is a danger is it could mess up the strengths of both sides of the draw but I suppose this has happened in other tournaments recently with less teams. It could actually benefit the stronger teams by giving them a chance to get into their stride with limited peril. I will be looking forward to a few games I suppose.0

Totally bored with football.........
So why am I on here all the time?
Why am I glued to the transfer thread?
Why am I so concerned that we sign at least two experienced decent Champ midfielders asap?
Why have I got all the play off final times on my calendar?
Why am I starting to think England might have a chance in the world cup?
Nah - bored with footie........
Vanity, vanity all is vanity?
