Not got a huge amount of sympathy for the Southampton fans, they were happy to make jokes and laugh about the claims during the semi final.Real case of Buyer beware regarding flights and hotels, they knew there was a risk of this happening12

I walk around Avery Hill a couple of times a week. And you can see the team training during the season. ( I have also found a football on more than one occasion ) It is has a tree lined perimeter, with access up to the fence with clear views of SL.WSS said:

Perhaps I should offer my services to the club as an anti spy spy.10 -

They will be reinstated with a £5 million fine instead. Nikon will be their shirt sponsor next year with a £10 million pound deal.3

If there was no material advagtage to the spying, then why do it?valleynick66 said:Seems like an unworkable rule.No sanction really works fairly for all.I’m far from convinced any material advantage / disadvantage is created by the so called ‘spying’.The whole thing about Football is that every match in every competition has the potential to be an ‘unexpected’ outcome. On a pragmatic level and aligned to other potential misdemeanours by clubs (over spending / players diving / cynical fouls / players being tapped up ahead of transfers etc) I think only a steep financial and points penalty is appropriate. Those in glass houses concerns me too as how can any club be certain they haven’t gleaned inside information on tactics / injuries etc that they should not?
If it’s such an advantage why is the penalty not specified in advance?
It’s a poorly thought through rule and sanction (combined).

I still find the whole situation crazy:
I feel for the Southampton players and if the Manager was behind the intern being a crap spy then surely he has to be sacked because he has cost the 'Sinners' a fortune in the play off final and a possible place in the Premier.
It was a paranoid thing to do just like Watergate which did go to the top man.5 -
Not great timing releasing their new kit

So, they admit to 3 games, which they never won any of them. How good was the spy?Think they’ve been at it since the new manager arrived.

For the majority of the Saints fans it’s a real kick in the teeth. For those that were openly mocking it however, good. There’s footage of some of their fans quite happily taking the piss. As for the players, no sympathy at all. If it happened three times, then surely each time the club’s managers/coaches would’ve relayed whatever information they got and I find it improbable that the players weren’t aware. You only have to look at Harwood Bellis’ reaction when they scored what they thought was the winner against Boro.Er_Be_Ab_Pl_Wo_Wo_Ch said:Must be soul crushing for the Southampton fans and players, this would take some getting over.
For the players, a season of graft for nothing, no promotion bonus, no premier league wages coming their way. No doubt players' agents will see that unravel.
If Southampton's appeal is successful, Boro fans and players will go through the agony of disappointment, all be it just for 24 hours of thinking they were in the final.Whoever came up with and sanctioned this, be it the manager, coaches, Director of football (if they have one), has got to go down in football history as being one of the biggest twat(s) in the game. They’ve literally made the club a laughing stock overnight and destroyed the hopes and dreams of many of their fans in the process. They won’t get over this for many years. With how social media is these days, and how football fans are in general, they are going to get hammered. If they’ve got any shred of decency about them as a club, the CEO, Manager and his immediate staff should all be stepping down with immediate effect
If this was us and our manager and whoever else had pulled a stunt like this, I wouldn’t want anything to do with them. How do the people responsible look their fans in the eye again. And the biggest most stupidest thing about this, we are talking absolute marginal gain, if anything. The Soton team in the second half of the season have been immense. They have the talent and the skill to go up without any perceived extra assistance. Whoever was involved in this must be feeling like an absolute shambles of a human being tonight13 -
Looking on their forum and the general feeling is that the fans have been massively let down, they have no chance of getting reinstated and a lot think that Eckert and his staff will have to be sacked.
There was this comment as well:"I sadly think it's fairly clear this was systemic now. This mega turn around was no mega turn around.
Those games at Charlton and Wrexham feel a bit iffy now."

Wow. I've just got back from doctor's appointment to see the news. I really didn't think the EFL would do this. I'm in a bit of shock. The appeal should be interesting.
I kind of feel like Soton won it on the pitch, regardless of the help, so results on the pitch should be upheld. But I think I'm also more Laissez-Faire about the whole cheating thing. I think it's something with a very finite benefit.
I can't see the final taking place on Saturday at this rate. Southampton will appeal and I can't imagine a decision is made quickly enough for the final to go ahead.
We're in unchartered territory!1 -
Eckert might be in hot water...

If Southampton have any class they'll not appeal to let the final take place. It's the only way for them to salvage an ounce of their reputation.15

been there myself a few times 😂0 -
conveniently they admitted to 2 games they didn't win, haven't they? Ipswich are hardly going to complainChris_from_Sidcup said:Let's be honest they've probably spied on absolutely everyone.
You'd have to be very naive to believe they'd be spying on Oxford but not on the likes of Coventry, Wrexham, Millwall, Hull, Derby etc.
The cynic in me suggests they've admitted to the Oxford game because they lost and the Ipswich game (they drew), so they can potentially argue in their appeal that the spying "didn't really matter".2 -

what if they reinstate Soton after the appeal then even more comes out and they have beaten Hull? Apparently they may investigate who at the club, notably senior officials who could be sanctioned, which has happened elsewhereManic_mania said:I think there is definitely more to come out with this - or at least there SHOULD be - no way they only spied on 3 teams -it's all very convenient that the other teams that they admitted to are already promoted Ipswich and already relegated Oxford (who they lost to) at vastly different stages of the season - Oxford in December then Ipswich end of April? (or was it the August game? same applies) So they did it once, then left it 4 months and did it again? Then only left it a few weeks to do it AGAIN to 'Boro - suss as fuck IMO. Questions need to be answered - Why them? and why ONLY them??
If I was to posit a conspiracy theory it almost seems like if more doesn't come of it, it seems a bit of a cover up - because it could potentially throw up a whole host of issues for other teams if it came out they were doing it every week and cause an even bigger headache for the EFL in terms of the integrity of the whole season. Again, conspiracy theory view only but I think it was a pattern and they have only admitted to the least potentially damaging instances hoping it will go away - and maybe it's in the interests of the EFL to not dig too deep?
What a complete mess!1 -

Yeah I'm assuming players were given playing instructions, but the Soton coaches wouldn’t be stupid enough to share the source. But given the carelessness of the spy when being caught, I guess he/colleagues could have been equally brazen to tell-all to the players.cabbles said:

If the players did know, that's an open secret between a lot of people - in which case it's only a matter of time before further confessions leak out... and if they were up to this on more occasions than owned up to so far.
Definitely a lot more on this to come out, it's a fascinating turn of events.6 -
The correct decision, but the views of many pose an interesting question.
Southampton rightly being lambasted for cheating.
And yet in every game I watch players and coaches cheat.
Cheating is cheating. There is no “degree” of cheating - you either do or you don’t.
So should the same degree of condemnation be applied to any circumstance in which cheating leads to a win - an attacker diving for a penalty? A defender preventing a goal by holding at a corner? Or Nathan Jones getting the goalkeeper to fake an injury in order to change the gameplan?4 -
