I couldn't comment because I haven't seen them pass forwards very often.iaitch said:
But if they pass forwards they get the Jones death stare.Chunes said:I think NJ has said he doesn't instruct the midfield to pass sideways and backwards. If anything he'd like to get it forward more quickly. But Cov and Doch are not great passers.4 -
Is he the replacement/upgrade on Doc or on Cov?Steven81 said:Like the look of that holsgrove, was scouring the net for info in forums about him and there isn't too much tbh but I did find this translated comment on the hamburger sv forum : ) after they was linked with him last August.
"I'm pleased by the rumor, because Holsgrove is by no means a pure defensive midfielder, even if he's described that way here. He's more of a central midfielder, but can also play as a number 10. Technically gifted, with good vision, relatively quick, and, as his statistics show, a prolific scorer. While I personally would prefer a classic number 10, offensively he's every bit as good as the existing players. I'd even rank him above Remberg and Capaldo in attack.
Furthermore, at Estoril he plays in one of the two central midfield positions in a 5-3-2 or 3-5-2 system"
Sound's right up our street tbh.
Carter's statement that the areas where we had January loans are where we need to bring in new players strongly suggest that a player to take on Coady's DM role is being sought.6 -
From the looks of it Holsgrove can probably play either of those roles. He looks like a player that can pick the ball up off the defence and start moves, which would replace Coventry. But he also looks like he’s comfortable higher up the pitch receiving the ball in more advanced areas.Henry Irving said:

Carter's statement that the areas where we had January loans are where we need to bring in new players strongly suggest that a player to take on Coady's DM role is being sought. He’d be a huge upgrade on either in terms of in possession for those roles, but maybe a downgrade out of possession. If we do sign him, I’m sure he will be paired with someone who is less technical and more about covering ground and winning the ball back so that we are still defensively strong6 -
Callumcafc said:He wins the ball a lot and looks to play forward as often as he can. Would be an exciting one, but no doubt there’d be strong competition.
Was gonna say I am surprised he has never been capped by Scotland, but then again it is comparatively the strongest part of their team really.0 -
Thanks, so him and Coady, or a Coady type, are the pairing then with Doc as cover and Coventry sold to raise moneyNabySarr said:

Does Holsgrove pass the CL height test or is he another midfield Oompa Loompa?0

3 whole centimeters taller than Coventry and therefore clearly better.SantaClaus said:Does Holsgrove pass the CL height test or is he another midfield Oompa Loompa?

Well ideally you have two players in a Holsgrove style mould. Part of what held us back last season was not having much positional flexibility in the team. If one of your midfielders can’t get up the pitch but can pick a pass he’s easy to nullify, as is the player who runs a lot but can’t pick a pass. If we had a double pivot able to do both then the creative responsibility isn’t left to your wingbacks and no 10Henry Irving said:

Great passing range and seems to be playing deep. Could be Coventry's upgrade.
I'm in love already.4 -

Nope, after googling “Great tits” following the “know your birds” thread I’m still in therapy so I’m steering well clear of that one! 😉carly burn said:

Like the look of holsgrove, can play first touch passes with both feet, great forward passing and not afraid of carrying the ball. Basically all the things we completely lacked in midfield last season.5
-
What’s the level like in those clips? (Genuine question, I have no idea.) Wondering if Conor Coventry would look as good in the right collection of clips from L1…2
-
If true, Holsgrove would be a good signing, and for me I am pleased we are shopping in this market. I honestly don't get the harshness towards Cov. I think he is a good player, and if we are going to play with the ball more, it will benefit him and us. Just the style of football, doesn't overly suit him!14

Wonder if as well as Holsgrove we’ll go back for Sam Field after reportedly being in for him in January?
Surprised to see he’s only just 28.Bags of experience and maybe one to replace Coady in the DM role.6 -
I wondered if he was a relative John Holsgrove. I seem to remember he was decent. He think he played left half, a position some may not recognise.Covered End said:Christ, I remember his grandad playing for Wolves.

I actually saw Holsgrove play in November 2024 against Porto. They lost 4-0 that day and the whole team was dreadful. Can’t say he stood out that day but his stats in general look impressive0
-
He also scored the winner against them in 2023 which was an upset.I do also wonder about the level of the league as a whole in comparison to the championship as someone also stated above but they do have some big teams in Porto, benfica and sporting lisbon etc which you would think would fair well in the prem.follett said:I actually saw Holsgrove play in November 2024 against Porto.
