One thing is for sure, tuchel has jinxed toney and us by saying in the press conference that toney is a world class penalty taker4

This post will get overlooked but it’s nailed on.Callumcafc said:Of the 23 outfield players who went to Qatar four years ago, four of them played absolutely no minutes at all. Another five played less than 100 minutes each.
That leaves only 14 outfield players who made a significant contribution in playing time.
The established players like Foden or Maguire have been left out to stop people whining in June about why he isn’t getting minutes, because he does not justify being part of that core 15. He’d inevitably be sitting on the bench, for Gary Neville to sit in a studio somewhere at half time in a game and say “give Foden a go”, like we haven’t tried that the past three tournaments to no effect.
A similar argument could be made about someone with fewer caps but is the flavour of the month like MGW or Bowen. Good players but they’re not getting picked to play over Bellingham, Saka et al. and the longer Tuchel drags this out into June by picking public flavour of the month’s, the worse it is for everyone in involved.
My expected core outfield players are: Guehi, Konsa, James, Stones, O’Reilly, Anderson, Rice, Bellingham, Saka, Rogers, Rashford, Gordon, Watkins, Kane and I’m not sure many will argue over those.
The rest of the selections (Burn, Livramento, Quansah, Spence, Henderson, Eze, Mainoo, Madueke, Toney…), we’re seeing people blowing their tops over 300 combined playing minutes being shared across 9-10 fringe players. This World Cup is slightly different because of the humidity and extra games, but it’s still a fair reflection.
Scrolling through socials the media reaction to players who won’t even play just to dig him out is so fucking weird; why do they get hardons for being such negative c***s.
Our media worst in the world. Geezer on SSN said its worst squad since 1998, We had Matt upson CB in 2010 and Ashley young left back in 2018 ffs6 -

Henderson getting pelters for his role in 2018 when at the age of 35, he’s had a better eight years than both Lingard and Dele Alli since then.4

Henderson becomes the first Englishman to be named in seven major tournament squads: 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018, 2020, 2022 and 2026.3

I think Southgate did pretty well. The only manager that has done better is Ramsey for obvious reasons. What detracted from all the positives regarding Southgate were key games when we sat back against Croatia and Italy when in a position of strength. I undersatnd Croatia but the same mistake was made against Italy in the Euros final which is poor.raytreacy said:
I don’t think that Tuchel will do any better than Southgate. In fact I think he will do worse.Killarahales said:Just watching the news conference and am always impressed with how Tuchel speaks and the way he’s thinking.3 -
Can't leave Greavesie out surely? And that Hurst geyser has hardly played?
Ramsey doesn't know what he's doing. It'll all be over by Christmas....1 -
Had enough of this world cup anyway,A commercial farce, ridiculous price for tickets, teams having to travel thousands of miles, now a squad that in my opinion is just not right.Gibbs white has run his bollocks off all season ,plenty of assists and scored a few.Maguire has been superb in the second half of the season,Lewis Hall impresses every time I see him play.Yet we pick Stones who has hardly played all year, and will probably get injured,Mandueke is 2nd or 3rd choice at Arsenal behind Saka and Trossard,Toney plays in a pub league,Henderson is past his best and will probably not get on the pitch,Burn, lovely guy and a credit to his club, but he will get ripped to pieces by the short quick passing styles of the better teams. If you are looking for a goal, why not Welbeck,he has been excellent all season, also dont understand Spence,he has hardly set the world on fire at Spurs this season.Oh well thats me done, good luck to the team but I cant see this being a long world cup for us.2

I agree on Palmer, but given the attacking players we have i think if we're ever in a position where we'd need to use Maguire in an attacking role then something has gone seriously wrong.MuttleyCAFC said:I would have taken Maguire and Palmer personally. Maguire as an option to try something different off the bench offensively if we are desperate as well as having centre back cover. Palmer again could do some magic off the bench. But Tuchel obviously picks the side he thinks is right and he knows what he is doing.2 -

And Dan Burn can/will do that job just as effectively as Maguire would anyway.Chris_from_Sidcup said:

Some of the picks are very odd.
That's said,I still think we have a very good Spine in Pickford,Stones,Rice and Kane0 -
Like most I think it’s a really strange squad with so many players who the majority thought would be definitely there missing but at the end of the day Tuchel is the manager and it’s his job to pick the squad he thinks gives us the best chance. Picking the most talented players haven’t won us anything so far so maybe he knows something we don’t0
-
I might have missed it……but has Tuchel made any explanation as to why he hasn’t selected McGuire?1

Hate to say it, and may get pelters but think the squad with the exception of a few players is bang average, nothing I’ve seen under Tuchel either excites or gives me much hope of getting that far in this World Cup, when comparing us to the better sides, France, Brazil, Portugal,Spain, Argies, are all better teams with better individuals. Will be encouraged and surprised if we get into the quarters. The likes of Foden, Palmer, possibly Trent should all be having a word with themselves as they have got what they deserve unfortunately, all of them should have walked into that squad with the talent they have, but they all fucked it. I know it’s a bit miserable but sadly how I’m feeling with this one.2

I've never really rated Trent or Foden.Especially in an England shirt.Sword65pf said:Hate to say it, and may get pelters but think the squad with the exception of a few players is bang average, nothing I’ve seen under Tuchel either excites or gives me much hope of getting that far in this World Cup, when comparing us to the better sides, France, Brazil, Portugal,Spain, Argies, are all better teams with better individuals. However,I do think Palmer plays the game unlike anybody else I've seen. I do always wonder about his attitude though
That said, I think I would've found a spot for him1 -
Given our failures to beat the better teams in the latter stages under Southgate, I reckon it's as much about mental attitude, toughness, experience and belief as it is about the best talent.
We have to go in to those games thinking we can beat them rather than just trying to stop them?
Whether he has got it right - time will tell?0 -

Everyone dislikes trent for his defensive level, but at the same time are excited about orielly….I would have taken both.Shame lewis skelly didnt get enough of a chance this season0

Still convinced we seem to be the only nation that would leave a Real Madrid player out of the squad and someone who has played in some huge games. People focus so much on what he’s not amazing at that we overlook Trent being practically the only one we got that can do what he does so well.
Ludicrous decisions are to include Spence, Livramento, Burn, Quansah, and Henderson. And to select these over players like Trent, Hall, Maguire, Colwill, Gibbs-White and Palmer is insane.

I'm glad 'Trent' isn't going if only for the fact that people insist on calling him 'Trent' as if he's their best mate. Sick of it.
(apologies for my grouchiness, it's the heat)10 -
There must be numerous examples. Benzema for France, for starters, who played 47 games for Madrid in 2017-18, and didn’t get chosen for France who went on to win the World Cup.Sage said:Still convinced we seem to be the only nation that would leave a Real Madrid player out of the squad and someone who has played in some huge games. I don’t know if Tuchel has got this right but Deschamps picks a team, not individuals. It’s also about picking a balanced squad. What you call ’insane’ is not so, it is the consequence of pragmatic choices imo.
I wish England fans would stop always criticising the manager these days. There may be a few surprises but nothing compared to that idiot SGE’s 2006 selection, who everyone irrationally loved. I would always only ever have an Englishman in charge but another argument.

In an article entitled, 'A Game of Two Alfs' the Daily Mirror cited the historian and author Grant Bage in yesterday's copy.
Bage likens Tuchel's thinking as similar to Alf Ramsey's. Tuchel isn't afraid to make big decisions, which in Tuchel's view would create a better team, even if this doesn't include the perceived better players. Jackie Charlton's inclusion in the 66 squad was deeply conroversial as was the decision to play Geoff Hurst over Jimmy Greaves. The fact that Harry Maguire (and his mum) have kicked off about not being in the squad may point to the reason why he wasn't included in the first place.
Bage, who wrote the biography, 'The Unseen Sir Alf' reckons Tuchel is channeling everything Sir Alf taught us back in 66 - especially about how England might win things.
Anyway it might be fanciful to compare Ramsey and Tuchel, if Tuchel is successful great, but if he falls flat on his face I'm pretty sure he'll hear about it ... as in fact we all will

Thinking back I was quite excited about the squad Hodgson picked in Brazil, so no one should take any notice of my opinions !4

I think Tuchel was a bit of a free hit for the FA and I'm not sure why they bothered with the contract extension.Raith_C_Chattonell said:In an article entitled, 'A Game of Two Alfs' the Daily Mirror cited the historian and author Grant Bage in yesterday's copy.

By free hit, I mean he's come in to a set up that has been run pretty well for the last decade with some success. He may not have been their first choice, but was the best of what was available. Filling Southgates shoes was/is going to take some time. Id suggest the host hemisphere for the world cup he's quickly had to prepare for wouldn't work for any incoming coach.
He's German,so even winning anything won't detract the nay sayers.
He has some pretty crazy ideas but due to the above, they've let him run with it.
If by any chance he manages to still be in credit with an under prepared squad in difficult and largely unfavourable conditions than well done him. Heres your new contract.
If not,we start again by finding a better fit and planning for tournaments we'll have a much better chance of success at.1
