Genuine left field rumour time. Visiting my mum in hospital today and picked up a drink from Costa on my way out.

Two blokes in West Ham training kit were chatting in the queue in front of me and mentioned that we (Charlton) were in for one of their former players Emmanuel Longelo.

Left back currently at Motherwell. Looks to have a year left on his contract.

No idea whether it was idle gossip or whether they were ITK, but thought it was worth passing on.
Thing is, they knew about our interest because they'd just been visiting Longelo after his double hip, double knee replacement and foot amputation
    Squad player only then

You must be joking.   First name on the teamsheet - twice a season

Just an arbitrary date really but I love that we have 84 pages and nearly 2.5k comments about a window that doesn’t officially start for another 20 days

We’re gonna have to do some serious damage in the loan market this year. Could be the difference
Absolutely this. NJ deciding to reverse his decision on loans in January saved us.
Hopefully we can add a few quality permanents and the rest quality loans.
I hope we can add two rwbs, a lwb, a left sided cb, two midfielders and a striker.
Crucially, he didn’t reverse his decision. He isn’t really against loans. He’s against loaning young players. We’ve loaned a player in every window he’s been in charge of and they’ve all been pros with some experience behind them. He just doesn’t want to develop the next Gallagher and have the club not get the reward for it
    Luke Chambers?
Reckon younger loans like this are more feeling out to see if they're good enough to sign permanently, as I can't see Chambers being anywhere near the Liverpool first team

Simon Church. And don’t give me that he played a load of games - that goes against him as he had ample chance to not be absolutely awful.
No way. Played for us in the Championship for starters which puts him miles ahead of some of the true L1 dross we had but also as much as he was nowhere near good enough he had his moments. Rescued a point for us against Barnsley, scored in that rearranged Doncaster game that was hugely important to our survival, got an important winner against Blackburn, got the assist for Jackson's last minute equaliser against Ipswich on New Year's Day and was actually a big part of our run to the FA Cup quarter finals; two assists against Oxford in the 3rd round and then got the winners against Huddersfield and then Sheff Weds to take us to within a game of Wembley before Duchatalet made a hash of it all. We stayed up by 7 points that season so he was undeniably a factor in that side miraculously not going down. Yes we would have liked to have had a better player but given that we spent £0 on players that summer bringing in 4 frees and 2 loans I'd say his contribution was actually outsized compared to his ability. He's not even in the conversation for worst player. He was basically a better Dave Mooney so you've got to have a look at Mooney before him anyway.
Is it my old aging brain playing tricks but didn't Church score a cracker against palarse on a friday evening from out on the left wing ( could have been a misplaced cross of course  :#)

Realistically, who do we think we can shift out of the door to make way for incomings?
I think there will be a mix of perm and loan outgoings, the loans in cases where it less likely we can find permanent homes too easily. Where the loans end up will be a fair indicator of the players’ ‘level’ though that said the more talented younger kids loaned would likely start at National League or League Two.

Perms: A Mitchell, Gillesphy, Assiimwe, Anderson + Kaminski or Mannion
    Loans: Ahadme, Tanto, Apter, Kanu

If the above is about right, can see us bringing in around 6 but all a step up in quality. Probably needs to be more but think if 4-5 of those are starters next year and with Josh Edwards returning etc., will be about right.

We could spread the money we have broader but suspect the trade off would
be reduced quality. I know what I would rather have.
When you say "a step up in quality", do mean "compared to those we are letting go" or "compared to those remaining in our first team squad"? Ideally, we need the latter if we are to avoid another relegation fight, but I believe the former is the best we will be able to do.
Compared to those remaining. I would be surprised as I say if we don’t spend wisely to buy 4-5 improved quality 1st team players. Creativity at WB, CAM, B2B midfield and ST (something out of nothing type player) being priorities. It’s what we missed most last season, the lads had to work way too hard for goals and too few were laid on a plate through clever/creative play over the course of the season. Solve that and keep the defence as relatively solid and we will be comfortably midtable.

Now we are relying on west ham fans who are fake ITKs?  What happened to all our own fake ITKs
They’ve been moved on and we’re in for two fake ITKs from Wet Spam. Or so I’ve been told, just waiting for WIOTOS.

Certainly when I went to school (over 60 years ago) that was the case, but computers might have altered that fact.

It may not be Bolton’s decision though it may be on the players end.

Bolton have said they’ve not offered him a contract. Will be a good pickup for league 1 but I think we should be aiming for better

No thanks. We dropped too many points with score-draws last season.

Just an arbitrary date really but I love that we have 84 pages and nearly 2.5k comments about a window that doesn’t officially start for another 20 days

    https://www.efl.com/news/2026/may/26/transfer-window-dates-confirmed-for-season-2026-27/
‘Officially’ being the operative word, as I know you are well aware.
  • Simon Church.
Luke Varney that was. (I think.)

Fevrier is a must because he can cover a variety of positions, particularly both wing-backs or full-backs if we go to a four.
Trouble is, he’s not that good.
True, but buggers can't be boozers. If we get him free or swapped for Olaofe, then it's a "utility" player gained without hassle.

My own preference for a cheap buy would be the even more versatile and more experienced Joe Powell, now at just relegated Rotherham. Could "do a job" as third choice in even more positions.
Although I have not noticed him playing lately.  Is he injured?
Played 30 times this season for a Rotherham side relegated to L2. No thanks.

Football season is over. I had time on my hands so I invented a time machine and headed to September...

You lot are not gonna like it!

If Bolton don’t want him then I’m not sure we should
It may not be Bolton’s decision though it may be on the players end.
Clubs always announce players they’ve offered deals to as under talks/discussions etc in retained lists.

being released straight up like Tutu means they didn’t think he was worth a contract and if we’re going for players that a team from L1 playoffs didn’t want might as well hand in our relegation form already.

Would have been Our equivalent of giving Tennai Watson another deal once we got promoted

'serious' hamstring, initially out for a month, injury is worse than originally thought .. Rotherham Advertiser .. so, unfortunately it's a 'no' from me

Why the window not opening on the 1st of June after the play off weekend is ridiculous…

The comments from ronnies stating the window isnt open have started.

The opening of this window is so pointless and not worth the paper it’s written on.

The window prevents new players from playing, not signing. If we signed a player today, they can’t play until August until the window is open. Therefore we can sign players

I heard He wants to test himself down south in the championship but it might have changed all though this has been published by a rangers site not too sure on the authenticity of it.

  • I've come to the conclusion we are being far too modest in looking at prospective new players given there are a number of quality players currently available on a free.

We badly need a forward. Jamie Vardy has just been released by his Italian club.

Likewise a right sided attacker to feed him would be good. How about Mo Salah, who is currently without a club.

A left sided defender is a must. John Stones has just been released by City. Sign him.

And Liverpool can solve our left back problem. Not young Chambers but Andy Robertson. He's on a free and will be desperate to get signed up somewhere.

I expect Bernardo Silva may be out of our reach atm but it could be worth a shot.

And I really fancy a little cheeky bid for Jarrod Bowen.

Reading this back I do wonder if the sun has got to me :-)

Played 30 times this season for a Rotherham side relegated to L2. No thanks.

More thoughtful posters here have demolished that sort of reasoning in several previous threads. For example, Lloyd Jones played 41 times for Cambridge Utd in League One in 2022/23, when they only missed relegation by a single point. Jarrod Bowen was first-choice for West Ham when relegated. Obviously no other club would touch him with a barge-pole for that reason.

Good players can play for poor teams. It happens all the time. By all means turn up your nose at Joe Powell, but not for that reason.

More generally, I think those who have excessive expectations for new signings are going to be greatly disappointed.
