1-1.5 million for Kanu and a decent sell on and that’ll do for me.
Shame really, I do think he’ll be very good in League One but I don’t know if we can gamble on him being enough in the championship.6 -
Unless the board were complicit in all this, then they could sack him for gross misconduct and bringing the club into disrepute avoiding any payoff...ElfsborgAddick said:NabySarr said:

This is a great plan and I hope it happens but there’s a decent chance Kanu turns around and says no I don’t want to sign a new deal just to go out on loan again, either give me a chance in the squad or I’m offAthletico Charlton said:Kanu is 21, works incredibly hard on the pitch, but more importantly, incredibly hard off it to maximize his potential. He just scored 15 goals in 38 league two starts for a team that finished in the bottom half. None were penalties. He did a clean sweep of Wallsall's awards and won L2 young player of the season iirc.
We should hold onto him, give him another year or two on his contract at decent L1 level wages and tell him we are loaning him to a top L1 club next season until January so he can prove he is worthy of coming back to our championship squad.
If we resign Godden I would expect it to be for 1 year.

I want us to be ruthless with flops like Apter, Burke, Tanto, Kaminski and with some of the mediocre like Coventry and Dykes. Not with young players with potential and who are hungry and angry.5 -

The whole thing stinks. The general view seems to be wtf do it for a minimal gain.

Sure, but he would have a choice of
- go somewhere like Luton in L1 permanently
- stay with us and go somewhere like Luton on loan with a return ticket guaranteed to the Championship of successful.
Assuming he is offered similar money for both then we should be in a good position imo.1 -
Of course we are. He's 21 years old, he won't be expensive to keep and he has a lot of potential. Selling an asset for £750k isn't going to give us anywhere near enough money to improve a squad more than we would have before but it will mean that we risk throwing away a player with potential for cheap. The now now now mentality is useless.AberystwythAddick said:

Makes sense, I’d assume we’d be in a very strong position because we could get “somewhere like Luton” to pay a good chunk of his wages for next season, so giving him a decent pay rise is probably a smart move if it means we keep himAthletico Charlton said:NabySarr said:

Admittedly I’m no talent expert but from my Knowledge DK has scored hatfuls of goals at every level he has played why shouldn’t he develop into a prolific striker as he goes up the ladder ? I think it’s a bit silly to be writing the kid off after a handful of first team appearances30
-
Think everyone is forgetting that DK might just want to move. That might not even be because of anything at the club, he might just want a new challenge. It was mentioned he partly chose Walsall because he wanted to try living outside of London. What if he decides he wants to try to establish himself as one of the top dogs elsewhere? There’s a very mature head on his shoulders, it’s very possible he wants a new challenge5

Wouldn't be selling DK unless we have a first refusal/buyback... He has something about him. Would try to tie him down for another few years and send him on loan to league 112
-
How does first refusal work in the real world?
We might agree a fee with the other club but the player might just say no thanks and surely that's that?2 -
I agree with this up to the point of him being out of contract next summer. That's kind of the catch here. As Naby and others have said, he may take a new deal with us then go out on loan, he may not.Garrymanilow said:

I personally don't think he's technically good enough for the Championship, at least not yet. And he may not be quite quick enough to get away with his lack of technical ability. If he has 2-3 years left on his deal, then I'd definitely say loan him out next year to a top end L1 side and then see how he does/improves. His workrate is awesome and he defends from the front well. But we just may not have that luxury this summer.
Also, on the 750k, that's just the first bid. I wouldn't be surprised to see a bidding war for him from L1 clubs. That doesn't mean he'll go for 5m, but it also means we might be in the position to demand sell on fee and potentially a buy back clause. Yes, he only has one year to run on his deal, but next summer he'd come with a development fee. So it's not necessarily all or nothing this summer, and I think the top L1 clubs will realize that.
All that being said, I do agree with the fact that, now that we're in the Championship, we need to be taking a longer term approach to young players. For a lot of them (Asiimwe, Anderson, Kanu, maybe Mbick) they might not be ready for the level quite yet, but they might have the ability to be ready for the level at some point in the future. So the more we can send them on loan to get first team experience, and then recoup the gains of that experience, the better off will be. Will all of them make it? No. But I think each has some attributes of a Championship level player and so it's worth seeing how they progress.3 -
I could be wrong, but I would be surprised if Kanu's preferred option wasn't to make it as a first team success with Charlton. He is a clever guy though so wont limit himself to only that possibility. I think that it is probably in everyone's interest to give him a 2 year extension on better money, if he isn't first team ready this year then a years loan in League one at the place of his choosing and assess next summer.
He is 21. Comparing his progression to Kelman and May, he is currently ahead of both. Kelman was just about to go and score 7 goals in 43 games for a League 2 Wigan and May was playing for Chatham Town.
He was trusted by Jones in League One to play a big role in our promotion and I think he is the kind of player Jones loves (fast, hard working and very willing to listen and follow exact instructions). I would be very surprised if Jones wanted to let him go permanently.
£750k - £1m could end up being good business considering he only has a year left on his contract, but I would rather see him sign a new contract and really try and make him a success with us.18 -
He has played 59 times. A lot more than a handful. He has scored one in nine in league one so he has not scored hatfuls at all levels he played at. I am not saying he can’t advance and play at a higher level but it is fair to at least question whether he will make an impact at the club when we are at two levels above where he has had success. That being said, I think it is a no brainer to extend him given his potential. I still wonder whether he wants to extend though or perhaps be transferred to a club where he knows he is a key component of their future.AndyG said:Admittedly I’m no talent expert but from my Knowledge DK has scored hatfuls of goals at every level he has played why shouldn’t he develop into a prolific striker as he goes up the ladder ? I think it’s only two seasons if a team gets relegated in their first season in the Prem. You’ve got to be there for two seasons to get three years of parachute paymentsBod said:
According to Wikipedia parachute payments are over 3 seasons, diminishing per season, although that depends entirely on the Wikipedia information being correct!MartinCAFC said:Southampton are also now going to be in there 2nd and final year of parachute payments and also starting with a points deduction. Maybe they're being a bit more cautious about spending high and perhaps looking to cut there cloth a bit and with players contracts expiring it might be easier to just let go some previous high earners like Bree who would have joined on a Premier League contract.0 -

I think there seems to be a lot of wishful thinking with Kanu, he isn't going to start for us next season, and most would be disappointed if he did, he's in the last year of his contract, and does it do him any favours to sit on the sidelines or the club for it to run down. Sell for a decent price now, get your 20% sell on, and if he goes off like a rocket at Luton, then cool, we'll make the additional money, if he hits his celing in League 1, then good for the lad.7

only scored in league two .. and National league .. failed in league one .. out of contract next summer no where near championship level … 750.000 is excellent price with sell on …. Cause if he has a bad loan next season we get nothing for him … he has no future at Charlton if we want to move forward0 -
Depends why he’s sacked. I think Southampton could easily justify a gross misconduct charge. He broke the rules for the industry he’s employed for and coerced junior members of his staff to do his bidding against their better judgment. He has arguably cost his employing club millions in lost revenue. Quite what defence he’d have at an employment tribunal I can’t imagine. Ignorance of the rules is no defence and he’s obviously guilty of being a bully. I don’t believe Southampton are holding back firing him for one minute. He’s still in his job because his boss Dragan Solak is as much of an arrogant prick as he is.ElfsborgAddick said:NabySarr said:

I was thinking he’ll probably be sold but it would make sense to get him on a long term contract if he’s happy with potentially going on loan again.
He’s a goalscorer, has decent pace, works hard on and off the pitch and after a season of regular football possibly fitter, stronger and more consistent. He’s still young enough to improve.
If he comes back it would be interesting to see how Jones uses him, as there’s an argument for him being the main goalscorer like Godden/Kelman, or in TCs role, with less pace and skill, but still running the channels and much more of a goalscorer.
I don’t see a future PL player in him, but he can still be a solid Championship player and if he gets there he’ll be worth a lot more than £750k.5 -
Exactly. Not worth the paper it’s written on, which is why “first refusal” never happens.IdleHans said:How does first refusal work in the real world?

I really hope DK continues his upwardly progress,he works his nuts off, however if he starts for us next season we would have had a shocker in the transfer market, he really isn’t good enough for the championship and another one of ours being over rated because he is one of ours. If he was a Walsall player after the season he had and we were linked, would we be excited by the signing?, I think there would be an absolute meltdown.2
-
If Kanu is happy to sign a new deal and be loaned out to league 1 then I’d be doing that.I’d only sell him if he refuses to sign a new deal and even then I think we should have some sort of buy back clause in there.13
