Favourite period supporting England

Was mesmerised by 86 world cup as a 6 year old and italia 90. Was absolutely devastated when Koemam cheated us out of usa 94 qualification and even more so when the germans saw us out of Euro 96 which would have beem so poetic winning after the way the whole country was grabbed by it.
Lost a bit of the magic and can't stand not having an English manager now as it devalues it for me hugely but will still get the flags up in a couple of weeks even though having a foreign manager winning it for us would takw the shine off massively.
Ok for mickey mouse developing football nations like Scotland to do that but really shouldn't happen for us.

Congratulations on your Diamond Wedding t&t!thickandthin63 said:Really got to be 66,i got married this year(60th anniversary yesterday) my parents lived in Springfield I had moved to a flat in Blackheath,we had no TV ,so spent much of my early days of marriage backwards and forwards watching the games. Also saw the France and Uruguay games at Wembley, you could pay on the day to get in.Dont think we will ever replace, the Likes of Moore and Bobby Charlton,or see a performance like Alan Ball gave in the final.Euro 96 also excellent,Saw the Spain game and the Semi against Germany, the rendering of 3 lions at the Spain game really made the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.1 -
Euro '96
First time I thought we might win a comp. And with 3 Lions AND Vindaloo being played everywhere it felt like the whole country was fully into it.3 -
98 was the first I remember and had some great teams in it.
2018 was the last tournament I really enjoyed and probably my favourite. The whole country seemed to be behind the lads for that. Watching the knockout games in and around Borough. That Sweden game was such a highlight. Weather was brilliant and everyone went mad after the game on the streets.
Made the mistake of watching the semi away from Borough and saw it in a pub near Clapham common. Southgate also made the mistake of not listening to me screaming at the TV when Madzukich came on that he needs to get someone to mark the bloke!!
Though to help relieve the pain of us being dumped out of the world cup there was a beautiful Brazilian girl I got off with after the game...1 -
With you there Elfs...ElfsborgAddick said:Club before country every time.Although Italy '90 was very exciting, and imo a defining moment in the changing of behaviour between supporters in England.2 -
Italia 90 although I think it has been romanticised to a degree. We had a turgid group stage, basically getting through via deflected header against Egypt, should have lost against Belgium before Platts wonder goal seconds from end, and lucked out with two pens v Cameroon
It was Gaza’s tears and Nessun Dorma that made the tournament iconic. And fuck you Peter Shilton- second World Cup in a row you cost us a final appearance.2 -
1996-2004. Hope and belief. Above all else, excitement.
From 2010 onwards, a long, slow and considerable decline in how much of my heart would go into the tournaments as I realised that the players were, in fact, selfish wankers. Playing badly, blaming everyone but themselves. Multi-millionaire Rooney swearing at the fans and down the camera, acting angry all the time. One year it's said that he underperformed because he was distracted by a fight with the News Of The World from publishing another cheating story.
And as they moved from football to podcastery, they revealed exactly how selfish they were. Opining on the reasons why it all went wrong, still shifting blame, thinking we were privileged to hear the behind-the-scenes gossip when in fact, they just revealed that they were to blame for the abject failures.
I detest them now. Especially the ex-United boys club. Butt, Rooney, Scholes and co. I Won't listen to a word that comes out of their mouths. They are a key reason (among a few) at to why I don't even know who England are playing this year, and won't get a head rush from over-celebrating a WC goal ever again.

Might I ask what you mean by that?ElfsborgAddick said:a defining moment in the changing of behaviour between supporters in England.0 -
Euro 96 and Euro 20200

The period after the disappointment of missing USA 94 up to France 98 was probably my best time.
Obviously we had Euro 96, had tickets all the way through, and I'd started going away in 93 which led to some great trips like Poland, Moldova and Georgia during that time, and the magnificent 0-0 in Rome.
A load of us (@Afternoon Delight) had a villa in the south of France for the 98 World Cup as a base, and the whole thing was chaotic and brilliant in equal measure.
Some good periods and unforgettable individual games since though, and going to the last few Euros with many of the same mates and my son have been quality times.

Euro 96 was my favourite.
Just about remember watching the 1966 final on our B&W TV.
My mum, although not a big football follower couldn't stand the tension when Germany equalised and went and sat upstairs away from the TV for the rest of the game.1 -
Euro 96.Specifically the game vs Holland.I’m convinced I’ll never see us play that well again.More specifically - their late consolation goal which meant that the Jocks got knocked out.Perfick.3
-
Agreed. Best I’ve seen England play was that Holland game.1

I have forgotten that. PLEASE remind me, or were you in an alternate reality?Carter said:Italia 90 was still the zenith of world cups for me but watching England especially in the group games nearly turned me off football! A lot of the games were stinkers but the volume of football and the characters, stories had me. I'll love that England team forever
Euro 96 the country really felt together
But the best time has been the Southgate years, Harry Kane absolutely walking past the goalscoring record, Harry Maguire and John Stones looking menacing from set pieces, Raheem Sterling carrying the ball and getting kicked shitless but not giving up and let's not forget routinely winning penalty shoot outs and getting to the late stages of tournaments including two finals which I genuinely never thought I'd see
I genuinely did not like that golden generation period, the games stank, no cohesion and we were relying on moments of individual class. Always supported and expected it to come good but as a group we were always fucked. Groups of exceptionally talented individuals will always get done by the team greater than the sum of its parts0 -
European Championships at Wembley 30 years ago and watching England in all 5 games for the total sum of £110 to £120 which was purchased 2 years previous to the tournament commenced
Attended the final with a heavy heart which was a further £60
Different times2 -
96 and 98 were good and have young memories .
Other than that, the southgate era1 -
We won 3 of 4 shootouts under Southgate. Before that we'd won 1 in 7.jimmymelrose said:

I've only ever seen England play once, in a 3-1 win V Sweden at Wembley in 1968, I was sitting right behind the goal when Bobby Charlton scored one of his screamers from outside the box...🙌2 -
2026 World Cup hopefully 🙏1

Yesterday I found myself watching England play New Zealand, yet most of my attention was on the plethora of flags from different places and clubs draped around the perimeter.
I am almost sure I saw a Charlton one with (I think) Bexley written on it, but towards the end of the match it had gone.
There was a threesome of Southampton and Middlesbrough with only Birmingham keeping them apart.0 -

Keegan and Co, the perm era! After that I have thoroughly hated watching England play.
Bit similar with Charlton actually...1 -
For me Euro 96 and Italia 90 I still can’t work out how we didn’t win those 2 !
im not that impressed with the current squad selection however picking our best players over the years did not produce any tournament wins so I’m hoping that Tuchel knows better than me and has picked a “team” rather than the best players and that will finally deliver1 -
Just thinking the southgate era was good as we werent expecting anything from the team when he came in… tuchel era, i think we expect more so prepared to be disappointed 😂1
-
I was not best pleased when Tuchel was appointed but I’m warming to him. He is a German with a sense of humour which sets him apart for a start lol. Seriously though he deals with the media very well and takes the heat off the players I think2121 said:Just thinking the southgate era was good as we werent expecting anything from the team when he came in… tuchel era, i think we expect more so prepared to be disappointed 😂1 -

Probably 2018 - present. Italia 90 and Euro 96 were great, but followed up with terrible performances in the next major tournaments.Worst for me were the Capello years.1
-
Euro 96 - as a kid and everything that came with that tournament/summer/spectacle
WC 2018 - felt a bit like Euro 96 all over again... amazing hot summer and the way it all built after an awful run of the previous few years - I was staying temporarily in my mate's flat in Blackheath, right next door to John Roan school and Greenwich Park and I remember walking out the door to go to work in the mornings and all the kids on their way to school talking about England every day, singing Three Lions... really reminded me of being a kid at school in Euro 96!
Euro 2024 - went to 6/7 England games - incredible time travelling round Germany... city to city... hot summer proper football country - just on the journey - when you're at the tournament the performances are less relevant and all that matters is the results... the Switzerland pens win then Holland and reaching the final in Berlin...0 -
2004 I thought we had a great team that was capable of winning it but bad management and squad selection from Sven and our own ill discipline cost us.0
